proud to announce that it has been awarded a prestigious 5-star rating by the National Rural  Rating System (NRRS), a program recognizing dedication and excellence in rural healthcare, as well as being named to the National Rural Honor Roll.
This esteemed designation is a testament to Memorial Hospital’s dedication to delivering high- quality care and exceptional patient experiences. The NRRS evaluates hospitals based on rigorous standards, including patient satisfaction, quality of care, and overall hospital performance.
The 5-star rating reflects Memorial Hospital’s ongoing commitment to meet the unique
healthcare needs of the rural community it serves. This recognition highlights the hospital’s
success in providing outstanding medical services despite the challenges often faced by rural healthcare facilities.
The 2025 National Rural Honor Roll honorees, announced each November, include rural
hospitals that have met the highest standards for patient experience based on cumulative ratings submitted by October 31, 2024. This annual recognition reinforces NRHA’s commitment to supporting and uplifting rural healthcare facilities as pillars of their communities.
“These awards really shine a spotlight on the heart and hard work that our rural hospitals bring to their communities,” says Brock Slabach, COO of the National Rural Health Association. “Rural healthcare comes with unique challenges, and reaching this level of excellence shows not only the clinical expertise but also the deep commitment these hospitals have to the people they serve.
This recognition celebrates rural healthcare as a source of strength, compassion, and
healing—right where it’s needed most.”
Memorial Hospital’s extends its heartfelt thanks to its dedicated team of healthcare professionals, whose tireless efforts and unwavering commitment to patient care have made this achievement possible.
The 5 Star Rating System ranks rural and critical access hospitals – with five stars being the top ranking and one star being the lowest. The Star Ratings are like the CMS Stars, which allow hospitals/clinics to promote their success and are used as high-quality recognitions. Most small About Memorial Hospital Memorial Hospital is committed to delivering outstanding healthcare. and rural hospitals (60%) do not qualify because of low number of qualifying inpatients for the CMS Rankings but are held to the same high patient satisfaction criteria. This program
recognizes the hard work, and dedication rural and critical access hospitals provide across the country. The rankings will include overnight hospital stays (HCAHPS) and are based on data collected by certified CMS patient satisfaction vendors.
The National Rural Honor Roll was created to honor rural and critical access hospitals and
clinics that consistently deliver exceptional healthcare, showcasing them as leaders in patient- centered care within their communities. Facilities included on the Honor Roll receive recognition for their dedication and excellence that sets them apart, demonstrating their commitment to patient well-being. Hancock County Health Department Announces the Dental Center has Re-Opened

The Hancock County Dental Clinic opened on May 26, 2006, on a part-time basis. It eventually grew to have one full-time dentist and staff. In late 2008 the expansion of the dental building was complete, and a wide array of services were provided until June 2022. Since that time the staff  have worked tirelessly to bring back much needed dental care to the community.
In March of this y ar a dentist, Dr. Tessa Johnson, came on board to reopen the dental center. Dr. Johnson is a Nauvoo native and went to dental school at the University of Iowa. A familiar face to the dental clinic, Erin Harris, dental hygienist, came back to the clinic. Along with Dr. Johnson and Erin there are also three dental assistants. Just like Dr. Johnson, Erin, and most of the dental staff are Hancock County natives and are excited to serve you.
With the opening of the dental center the services offered will be exams, digital x-rays, cleanings, periodontal therapy, tooth-colored restorations (fillings), pediatric stainless-steel crowns using the Hall Technique (no drill, no shot), extractions, and treatment of emergencies. Extensive oral surgery procedures, including wisdom tooth removal, will also be offered. Dr. Johnson will also be offering nitrous oxide for children to enhance the services provided to our pediatric patients. The staff are experienced and passionate about the oral health of kids! If you are experiencing pain or swelling, please let us know when you call, we try to prioritize treating pain an infection.

Most insurances accepted along with Illinois Medicaid. Sliding fee scale is also available. Please call today to schedule an appointment or if you have any questions, 217-357-6984. The Dental Center  hours are Monday through Thursday 8am to Noon and 1pm to 5pm.

Dedication of sculpture by renowned artist Richard Hunt to take place April 24 at Sandburg

Dedication of sculpture by renowned artist Richard Hunt to take place April 24 at Sandburg

GALESBURG — A public art dedication will take place at 2 p.m. April 24 in the Student Center on Sandburg’s Galesburg campus for the donation of a piece by late renowned sculptor Richard Hunt.

Hunt’s creation, “Winged Hybrid,” will be donated to the college by Naomi Law and Anthony Law III for the enrichment of the Sandburg community and student engagement. All are invited to attend the dedication.

A native of the South Side of Chicago, Hunt, who passed away in 2023, grew to become one of the most prominent sculptors of the 20th century. He studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where he developed his artistic practice and devoted himself to working with metal, teaching himself to solder and later weld discarded metal he scavenged from local scrapyards.

At the core of Hunt’s artistic and philosophical approach was a fundamental concern with freedom: political and artistic freedom as well as personal and universal freedom.

"I am interested more than anything else in being a free person,” Hunt once said. “To me, that means that I can make what I want to make, regardless of what anyone else thinks I should make."

Throughout his seven-decade career, Hunt staged over 170 solo exhibitions at major museums and galleries and secured more than 160 large-scale public sculpture commissions. Among his works, Hunt paid tribute to American icons such as Martin Luther King Jr., Mary McLeod Bethune, Jesse Owens, Hobart Taylor Jr. and Ida B. Wells-Barnett. In 2022, former President Barack Obama commissioned Hunt to create a sculptural work, “Book Bird,” for the Obama Presidential Center. Learn more about Hunt at richardhuntsculptor.org

Though not required, you can RSVP for the event here or by emailing foundation@sandburg.edu.

Renovated Student Center connects Sandburg students with services, one another

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

April 11, 2025

GALESBURG — Now more than just a place for students to relax, Sandburg’s newly transformed Student Center also gives them a central location to access the services available to help them succeed.

A grand reopening celebration for the Student Center, which underwent substantial renovations for much of the last year, took place Thursday afternoon as the public was invited to take in the space’s eye-popping transformation.

“What began as a vision to update our facilities has transformed into something far more significant: a reimagining of what student life can be here at Sandburg,” said Autumn Scott, vice president of student development. “The renovated spaces you see around you today represent our commitment to creating an environment where Chargers can connect, collaborate and create.”

The interior configuration of the building was altered to provide a more open feel, and the renovation also brought many of the college’s student services — including advising, academic support, counseling, TRIO Student Support Services, student engagement, financial aid and recruitment — under the same roof.

“This integrated approach reflects our dedication to removing barriers and supporting student success at every turn,” Scott said.

Fresh carpet, upgraded lighting and a large assortment of new furnishings give the Student Center a modern look. It also features an Innkeeper’s Coffee location and includes collaborative study rooms for students seeking more privacy.

Renovation work began in May 2024, and the building initially reopened to students last month as they returned from spring break. Part of the planning process for the redesign included gathering input from students on some of the spaces and services they’d like to see in the Student Center.

“I'm very happy (the students) got to see this before they graduate and go off to other places,” President Dr. Seamus Reilly said. “They believed they were doing something that would benefit future generations of students, and that's a testament to their own vision and their own commitment to what it means to be to be educated.”

The Student Center remodel checks off another box on an updated campus master plan for improvements and developments at Sandburg. The building is connected to the newly constructed Science & Technology Center, which opened at the start of the current academic year.

“The energy and activity over the past few weeks have been very exciting, and I think it paints a great picture for current students and future students to look forward to here at Sandburg,” said Zair Ruiz Velazquez, who serves as the college’s student trustee.

Velazquez said that in just the handful of weeks since the Student Center reopened, he’s noticed a significant difference in how much the area is used, and he’s heard positive feedback from his classmates about its modern look, spaciousness, vibrant colors and gathering areas.

“Watching this area be utilized adds to that sense of community I was searching for in a college,” Velazquez said. “Now, with the addition of our new Student Center, I feel that our sense of community is stronger than ever.”
