Midwest Grass & Forage  1300 E University Drive  Macomb IL. is excited to announce a new program in conjunction with West Prairie High School FFA. Starting Friday, September 23rd, after 3:30 PM, pumpkins and gourds from MGF's patch will be available for sale at Midwest Grass & Forage, with proceeds to benefit the West Prairie FFA. 

On Friday, Sept 23 from 1:30 - 2:30 some students from West Prairie FFA will be present to help harvest and sort the pumpkins. After the initial harvest is completed, they will be sorted by size and type, and be available for sale to the public.

Choose Your Pumpkins - there will be several boxes with different prices and sized pumpkins. Pricing will be clearly labeled on each box.

A descendant of early settlers in the Illinois towns of Rankin, Odell and Henry, Johnson spent his youth detasseling, walking bean fields and visiting family in Nebraska, where his grandfathers were farmers. His creations often feature rural landscapes and scenes of small Midwestern towns.

A central Illinois native, Johnson has been featured in Chicago at the Peter Miller Gallery, the Addington Gallery and the Chicago International Art Exhibition. His pieces are also included in many private collections. Johnson earned his bachelor’s from Illinois State University and a Master of Fine Arts from Northern Illinois University.

Established in 2006 and named for area artist Lonnie Eugene Stewart in 2015, the Lonnie Eugene Stewart Art Gallery has hosted group faculty exhibits, juried student exhibits and the works of area professional artists. The Mississippi Valley Council, Boy Scouts of America is proud to announce the ribbon cutting for their new $335,000 bathroom and shower house at Camp Eastman in Nauvoo.  This new shower house provides 10 new individual bathroom and shower rooms for Scouts and guests visiting Camp Eastman.  The camp annually hosts over 300 Scout campers during the summer as well as several different organizations and groups throughout the year.  Come to the ribbon cutting ceremony on Thursday, September 22nd at 10:00 AM to see the new facility and take a tour of the beautiful 308-acre property!

Community Flu and Pneumonia Clinics 

Schedule in Hancock County

The Hancock County Health Department has eight community-based Flu and Pneumonia Clinics scheduled at the latter part of September and beginning of October.  All clinics will be held using a drive-thru format.  In order to run as smoothly and safely as possible, participants are asked to look for directional signage at each location.  Signs will indicate where to enter and exit, as well as, inform participants where to go and what to do.  Clinics are as follows; Wednesday, September 28, 1:00-3:00 p.m. at the Bowen Christian Church Parking Lot, Monday, October 3, 9:30-11:00 a.m. at the Dallas City Elementary School parking lot, and then from 1:00-3:00 p.m. at the LaHarpe Christian Church Parking Lot, Tuesday, October 4, from 9:30-11:00 a.m. at the Basco Community Building Parking Lot and then from1:30-3:30 p.m. in Carthage at the Trinity Lutheran Church Parking Lot, Wednesday, October 5, 1:00-3:00 p.m. at the Hancock County Fairgrounds in Augusta, Tuesday October 11, 1:30-3:30 p.m. at the Hamilton Community Building Parking Lot, Wednesday, October 12,1:00-3:00 p.m. in Warsaw at the Bott Community Center Parking Lot.

The cost for the flu and pneumonia shots are as follows;  Flu $30, High Dose Flu $75, Pneumonia $140, and Prevnar 13 $248.  Participants are asked to bring their Medicare or insurance cards, check or cash.  Individuals should check with their healthcare provider to determine which flu and/or pneumonia shot is most appropriate.  Personal healthcare providers know their patients' medical history the best.   If you have questions, please give the health department a call at 217-357-2171 option 3.

Free Child School Exams Offered at the 

Hancock County Dental Center

The Hancock County Health Department is excited to announce that the Hancock County Dental Center will be providing free school dental exams to kids who are required to have them. Free exams will take place on Thursday, September 22 from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Friday, September 23 from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Children who entered kindergarten, second, sixth and ninth grade this school year are required to have a dental exam performed by a dentist.   This requirement must be completed no later than May 15, 2023.   Appointments can be scheduled by contacting the Dental Center at 217-357-6984.

HANCOCK COUNTY ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR SAM HARNAK-  HANCOCK COUNTY CEO CLASS VISIT AND UPCOMING MEETING

Hancock County Fights Cancer presented checks totaling $40,500 from proceeds of this
year’s team fundraising events and annual block party.
The group presented a check for $16,200 to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital for cancer
research, and a second check for $24,300 to HUGS of Hancock County, the local cancer
support group.
At the group’s annual meeting held in August, treasurer Kim Taylor reported total receipts
from team events was $22,671. More funds were raised with the car show, community
sponsors, township drives and other activities during the annual Block Party, held June 4 on
the courthouse square in Carthage. A $7,000 donation was received from the Strawberry
Strut committee following their 2022 event.
The report showed that $43,743.72 was raised in the year ending July 15, 2022. There were
$3,087.25 in expenses.
Proceeds from the year were given to the two groups, with 60 percent going to HUGS and 40
percent going to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital for research.
HUGS is a not-for-profit organization that gives financial and emotional support to cancer
patients from Hancock County.
“The financial support may include $200 gas cards, $200 pharmacy and $200 gift cards,”
explained HUGS treasurer Melita Finney, after accepting the check.
“Additional assistance is available if needed. HUGS relies solely on memorials and donations
to fund these services. Every dollar received stays in Hancock County to be used here,”
Finney said.
“Our board has a special task of being good stewards of all the money donated to HUGS.”
The gift to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital was presented to Molly Shepherdson,
marketing director for field operations in Illinois and Iowa for St. Jude. Families of children
treated by St. Jude are never asked to pay any cost not covered by their insurance.
In addition, constant research at the hospital complex in Memphis, Tenn., creates new
procedures and treatments for childhood illnesses. These findings are shared throughout the
U.S. and the world.
At the annual meeting, next year’s HCFC block party was set for June 3, 2023. The board
voted to continue giving 60 percent of funds raised to HUGS, and 40 percent to St. Jude’s
Children’s Research Hospital.
Hancock County Fights Cancer Board and officers for 2022 were elected, with Cynthia
Stewart as president, Kris Pilkington as vice-president, Kim Taylor as treasurer, and Joy
Swearingen as secretary.
Other board members are Diane Adkisson, Cari Davis, Annette Heinike, Camie Pilkington,
Christina Roberts, Rachel Ward, Jo Webster and Greta Wetzel.

provides cancer patients in Hancock County with gas cards or help with prescription costs, as
well as other financial support on a case by case basis, such as rent, utilities or emergency
needs.

MEMORIAL HOSPITAL TO CLOSE STORK STOPP

Carthage, IL – 9/6/2022 – Memorial Hospital in Carthage, Illinois, will discontinue its labor and delivery
birthing services. The closure of the inpatient labor and delivery unit, called the Stork Stopp, is scheduled
for Thursday, December 1, 2022.
According to the May 2022 issue of Becker’s Hospital Review, the US will face a deficit of 450,000
nurses by 2025. Unfortunately, the nursing shortage has affected many health systems, including
Memorial Hospital. The Stork Stopp requires labor and delivery trained nurses to be in-house, around the
clock, even if there are no obstetric patients. Due to the difficulty recruiting nursing staff and the
dependence on contracted agency nurses, the decision has been made to discontinue labor and delivery
birthing services. While there will be employees affected by this closure, these employees have been
afforded the opportunity to apply for transfer to other positions within the organization.
After December 1, birthing services will be transitioned to Blessing Hospital through the collaboration of
Quincy Medical Group and Dr. Christopher Jones unless the patient chooses to deliver elsewhere. Dr.
Jones and Lila Brooks Fritz, CNM, will continue to provide all of the services they currently offer at
Memorial Medical Clinics, which include prenatal, post-partum, and women’s health. In addition, Dr.
Senthe will continue to provide comprehensive pediatric services.
Expectant mothers will receive a letter of notification via mail. To further assist expectant mothers,
Memorial Medical Clinics will also reach out via telephone by the end of day Friday, September 9, 2022.
“The decision to close the inpatient OB services was difficult and emotional,” said Memorial Hospital
CEO Ada Bair. “Our amazing team of women’s health providers, and pediatric providers will continue all
other services in the outpatient setting. We look forward to caring for women and children of this region,”
added Bair.
