Memorial Hospital’s Health & Wellness Teaching Kitchen is excited to
announce the Fall Edition of Balanced Bites: Cooking for Diabetes. This event promotes
diabetes wellness through healthy cooking. The class will take place on October 30, 2024,
at 10:30 AM, located at 1454 N. Co. Rd. 2050, Carthage, IL in the Health & Wellness Center at Memorial Hospital.
Led by Kayce Fuhrman, Registered Nurse, and Ashlyn Housewright, Registered Dietitian
and Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist, participants will learn how to prepare
delicious, diabetes-friendly meals. For the low cost of $25, attendees will enjoy a healthy
lunch, gain valuable insights into diabetes wellness, receive meal preparation strategies,
and take home recipes perfect for the fall season. Additionally, there will be exciting
giveaways!
“Balanced Bites is a wonderful opportunity for individuals with diabetes to learn about
nutritious cooking and how to manage their condition effectively,” said Ashlyn
Housewright. “Our goal is to empower people with the knowledge and skills they need to
lead a healthier lifestyle.”

The Range at KC to Host “Fore the Children” Event in Honor of Chaddock

– In a heartwarming show of community support, The Range at KC will host its first-ever
“Fore The Children” fundraising event on Saturday, October 5th, in honor of the Chaddock Children’s Foundation. This exciting event will offer participants the chance to experience the new facility with proceeds benefiting the programs and services of Chaddock. Whether you're an experienced golfer or just looking for a fun day out, this family-friendly event is sure to deliver an unforgettable experience while supporting a great cause.
Event Highlights:
• Teams of 4 will enjoy a 2-hour session in their own hitting bay, complete with covered, heated seating.
• Compete for amazing prizes, generously donated by R&R Golf.
Participants will compete in teams to play 18 virtual holes of golf, with real-time tracking of their ball flights, making it feel just like being on the course! Teams can also look forward to friendly competition for a chance to win exciting prizes, all while supporting Chaddock.

Memorial Hospital is pleased to share that Melissa Brewer, a Nurse Practitioner
specializing in emergency care, has been appointed as the State Representative of Illinois for the  American Academy of Emergency Nurse Practitioners (AAENP). This significant achievement highlights Brewer’s expertise and dedication to advancing emergency care within the local communities and the national medical landscape.


The AAENP is a leading professional organization that promotes high-quality, evidence-based practice for nurse practitioners providing emergency care to patients of all ages and medical conditions. Through collaboration with interdisciplinary teams, the Academy aims to improve patient outcomes and set standards for excellence in emergency healthcare.


In Brewer’s new role with the AAENP, she will work alongside top professionals in the field to contribute to the Academy’s core goals which include: establishing guidelines for quality and safety in emergency healthcare, encouraging ongoing clinical education for other nurse practitioners in emergency care, supporting specialized training and education to enhance skills in emergency settings, facilitate and promote research to advance emergency medical care, and collaborate with other health organizations and academic institutions to further strengthen emergency care practices.
“I am honored to join the AAENP and work alongside such a dedicated group of professionals,” stated Brewer. “This is an incredible opportunity to advocate for emergency care and contribute to the development of guidelines that will impact patients across the country.”
Brewer’s appointment not only reflects her personal commitment to patient care but also will enable her to bring valuable insights back to the community, thereby improving emergency care protocols locally.

Chaddock Hosting Youth Mental Health First Aid Training in Carthage    October 8th at the Carthage United Methodist Church

Carthage, IL – Chaddock is proud to announce an upcoming Youth Mental Health First Aid
training, taking place on October 8th at the Carthage United Methodist Church from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM. This essential training is designed for individuals working with or supporting youth between the ages of 12-18, including teachers, school staff, coaches, camp counselors, youth group leaders, and parents.


The course will be hosted by Cassie Ransom, Chaddock's Developmental Trauma & Attachment Program (DTAP) Quality Improvement Manager, and Erin Flesner, a Counselor with Chaddock's Foster & Adoption Services.


Youth Mental Health First Aid is designed to equip participants with the skills to identify,
understand, and respond to signs of mental health and substance use challenges in adolescents. With the growing need for mental health support among youth, this training is vital for any adult that works with youth.
Cost to Attend: $30
CEs Available: For an additional $49, licensed social workers and counselors can receive
continuing education (CE) credits.

HANCOCK COUNTY FIGHTS CANCER PRESENTED CHECKS TOTALING $46,000 TO

CANCER SUPPORT ORGANIZATIONS

Hancock County Fights Cancer presented checks totaling $46,000 from proceeds of this
year’s team fundraising events and annual block party.
The group presented a check for $18,400 to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital for cancer research and a second check for $27,600 to HUGS of Hancock County, the local cancer support group.
At the HCFC annual meeting held in August, Kari Davis reported total receipts from the 13
teams was $32,789.30. More funds were raised through a car show, community sponsors,
township drives, and other activities during the annual Block Party, held June 1 on the
courthouse square in Carthage.
A $8,500 donation was received from the Strawberry Strut committee following their 2024 run. 
“We are grateful to the Strawberry Strut committee and to the community for their support of our cause,” said HCFC board president, Cynthia Stewart.
Proceeds from the year were given to the two groups, with 60 percent going to HUGS and 40 percent going to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital for research.
HUGS is a not-for-profit organization that gives financial and emotional support to cancer
patients from Hancock County. 
“The financial support may include $200 gas cards, $200 pharmacy and $200 gift cards,”
explained HUGS treasurer Melita Finney.
“Additional assistance is available if needed. HUGS relies solely on memorials and donations to fund these services. Every dollar we receive stays in Hancock County to be used here,” Finney said.
“Our board has a special task of being good stewards of all the money donated to HUGS.”
The gift to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital was presented to Molly Shepherdson,
principal advisor, Midwest Territory for St. Jude fundraising. Families of children treated by St. Jude are never asked to pay any cost not covered by their insurance.
In addition, constant research at the hospital complex in Memphis, Tenn., creates new
procedures and treatments for childhood illnesses. These findings are shared throughout the U.S. and the world.

HUGS (Help Us Give Support) gladly accepts cancer patient referrals from the public. HUGS
provides cancer patients in Hancock County with gas cards or help with prescription costs, as well as other financial support on a case-by-case basis, such as rent, utilities, or emergency needs.
Anyone knowing of someone who has been diagnosed with cancer can make a referral to
HUGS at any time by calling Florine Dixon at 217-219-0084 or Joyce Buckert at 217-357-
3887.

• Positive outcomes experienced by those who participate in Chaddock’s services
• Cottage life for youth in residence
• How to make a referral for the Developmental Trauma and Attachment Program (DTAP)
