Newest show at Sandburg highlights area 'Art Sistas'

Newest show at Sandburg highlights area ‘Art Sistas’

GALESBURG — The latest art show of the 2025-26 academic year at Sandburg highlights pieces by six local women artists who refer to themselves as the “Art Sistas.”

“Influences & Intersections” is in the art gallery in building D on the Galesburg campus through Nov. 18, and an artists’ reception for the show will take place from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Nov. 14. The show and reception are free and open to the public. Regular gallery hours are weekdays from 8 a.m.-6 p.m.

The “Art Sistas” are comprised of Chris Dokolasa, Lori Reed, Mary Schuytema, Linda Sickmon, Rae Standard and Janis Wunderlich. The six have been meeting to collaborate and critique since 2012. Their personal stories are woven into their work, and their shared experiences and monthly meetings influence the art they create.

Dokolosa, who works primarily with clay, now operates Hole in the Earth Pottery in Galesburg after retiring from a 34-year teaching career in Galesburg District 205.

Reed creates mixed media by digitally altering photos and cutting prints of several versions before combining them to make a new, abstracted scene. Her pieces for “Influences & Intersections” combine birds or animals with impressionist paintings.

Schuytema uses clay and glaze mixed with natural elements such as root, wood or stone, which often come from her farm. An artist for more than 40 years, Schuytema operates Chickenscratch Pottery out of Kirkwood.

A former hairdresser, Sickmon got into pottery after retirement when she took an adult education class at Sandburg. She now has her own pottery studio outside of Oquawka.

Standard, another former hair stylist, also works primarily with clay. Much of her work features busts of women with exotic hair or hats.

An associate professor of art at Monmouth College, Wunderlich creates detailed ceramic sculptures and paintings inspired by ancient ceramic storytelling figurines and her step-grandfather, a Cherokee folk artist. Her pieces have been in private and museum collections worldwide, including Taiwan’s Yingge Ceramics Museum and the American Museum of Ceramic Art in California.

For more information about the show, contact gallery director and art program coordinator Lisa Walker at 309.341.5303 or ldwalker@sandburg.edu.
