Ride Right Rally Teaches Life-Saving Safety Skills to Over 340 Local Youth

Ride Right Rally Teaches Life-Saving Safety Skills to Over 340 Local Youth

Mendon, IL — Off-road vehicle accidents send more than 100,000 people to the emergency room each year in the U.S., with an average of 500-700 lives lost annually. Many of these accidents involve youth—and many are preventable. That’s why Illinois Extension and a coalition of local partners came together to host the Ride Right Rally, a hands-on safety event designed to equip sixth-grade students with the knowledge and skills to stay safe around ATVs, mowers, and other equipment.
Held at the Adams County Fairgrounds, the event brought together over 340 sixth-grade
students from Adams, Hancock, Pike, and Schuyler counties. Led by local 4-H and FFA members, participants rotated through five interactive stations covering ATV safety, mower safety, rollover protection safety, power take-off (PTO) safety, and bicycle safety. The day concluded with a powerful mock ATV/UTV accident simulation, giving students a firsthand look at how emergency responders handle real-life emergencies.
Students were asked to share one thing they learned at the Ride Right Rally, and their responses reflected the event’s lasting impact. Many mentioned key safety takeaways like always wearing a helmet, letting others know where they are, understanding what a PTO is, and knowing the legal rules for riding on the road. One student summed it up powerfully: “It’s never if, it’s always when. Always wear a helmet and always ask permission. Safety is very important.”
The simulation featured Adams County EMS, the Adams County Sheriff’s Department, and Air Evac from Macomb, who walked students through the 9-1-1 response process—from dispatch to helicopter evacuation. Students were even able to explore the inside of the Air Evac helicopter, turning a dramatic scenario into a memorable learning experience.
The event was made possible through a strong network of community partners, including Adams County Emergency Management Services, Adams County Sherrif’s Department, Adams County Fair Board, Birkey’s Farm Store, Heritage Tractor, Smith Brothers Powersports, and the Farm Bureaus from Adams, Brown, Hancock, Pike, and Schuyler counties, who also provided lunch for participants.

Additional contributions were provided by Knox Seed, First Bankers Trust, Refreshment Services Pepsi, and Ursa Farmers Cooperative.

“By giving students a chance to see, hear, and experience what safety looks like in action, we’re helping them make smarter choices that could one day save their lives,” said Siera Duesterhaus, Adams County 4-H Coordinator.
Thanks to this collaborative effort, hundreds of local youth are now better prepared to navigate the risks of rural life with confidence and care. Because of Illinois Extension and its partners, safety isn’t just a lesson—it’s a legacy.
About Extension: University of Illinois Extension develops educational programs, extends knowledge, and builds partnerships to support people, communities, and their environments as part of the state & land-grant institution. Extension serves as the leading public outreach effort for University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences in all 102
Illinois counties through a network of 27 multi-county units and over 700 staff statewide. Extension’s mission is responsive to eight strategic priorities — community, economy, environment, food and agriculture, health, partnerships, technology and discovery, and workforce excellence — that are served through six program areas — 4-H youth development, agriculture and agribusiness, community and economic development, family and consumer science, integrated health disparities, and natural resources, environment, and energy.

Brining, Dickerson named 2025 Sandburg alumni award winners

Brining, Dickerson named 2025 Sandburg alumni award winners

Sandburg has announced the winners of its 2025 alumni awards. Dr. Doug Brining, a 1988 graduate, was selected as the Distinguished Alumnus Award recipient, and Craig Dickerson, a 2017 graduate, received the Pacesetter Award.

Brining and Dickerson are also Sandburg’s nominees for the Illinois Community College Association’s Distinguished Alumnus and Pacesetter awards. The ICCTA award winners will be announced at the organization’s banquet June 6 in Normal.

2025 Distinguished Alumnus Award

Dr. Doug Brining ’88

Dr. Doug Brining is a dedicated leader with exemplary accomplishments that have created a profound impact. He’s given extensive time and dedication to the field of science and veterinary research while collaborating on the examination of the world’s most infectious diseases. Brining has published 40 articles, served on more than 20 committees and has performed numerous exploratory surgical procedures.

In high school, Brining believed his counselor when told he wasn’t college material. A first-generation college student, Brining enrolled at Sandburg as a chance to meet people, but he soon realized his passion for science. Brining found himself enrolling in all science classes offered by the biology instructor who gave inspiration to his studies.

Brining graduated from Sandburg with an Associate in Science in 1988. Though still not convinced he was college material, Brining’s friends encouraged him to apply and continue at a four-year institution. Brining earned two bachelor’s degrees and later his doctorate from Texas A&M University.

Brining now holds four employment titles with the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. He serves as assistant vice president for research administration (animal programs), executive director of UTMB’s Animal Resources Center, attending veterinarian and assistant professor of microbiology and immunology. In addition to his work with UTMB, Brining is a diplomate of the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine.

“It would be difficult for me to overstate the influence and importance that my time at Carl Sandburg College had on both my future academic and professional career,” Brining said. “Over 35 years have passed since my time there, and I’ve often shared how much I benefited by attending community college. When I started my coursework there, I truly didn’t have a specific end goal in mind and would have never imagined the journey this foundational decision would set in motion.

“At Carl Sandburg College, I developed fundamental academic skills and discovered the joy of learning for the sake of interest. I clearly remember the quality of the professors and their dedication and enthusiasm about the subjects they taught. Their excitement and passion were genuinely contagious. It was there I developed an intense interest in biology and life sciences, which led me to a career in marine biology, veterinary medicine and academic research. I’ll be forever thankful about my decision to attend and for the powerful influence that choice had on my life.”

2025 Pacesetter Award

Craig Dickerson ’17

As someone who prioritizes goals and is dedicated to making them a reality, Craig Dickerson exemplifies what it means to be a pacesetter.

While a student at Sandburg, Dickerson worked as a supervisor at a local restaurant to assist with paying for college. He was also an NAACP member, participated in Relay for Life, volunteered for La Grace Hall of Hope, presented at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day breakfast and was active in Men of Distinction. After graduating from Sandburg in 2017 with an associate degree, Dickerson earned his bachelor’s in sales and marketing from Illinois State University.

In 2019, Dickerson began work for Verizon as a retail specialist. Early in his career, he set the goal of joining Verizon’s Learning and Development team. Dickerson was named to Verizon’s Diamond Club in 2022 and recognized as a premier senior account manager the following year. Last September, Dickerson achieved his goal of becoming as a senior trainer with the company’s Learning and Development team. In addition to working for Verizon, Dickerson has worked at Staples, ESPN3, Scope Health & Fitness and for the Peoria County government.

“I wouldn’t be where I am or who I am today without the experiences I had during my time at Carl Sandburg College,” Dickerson said. “Being born and raised in Galesburg, you sometimes aren’t exposed to all the world has to offer or have the chance to interact with people who are vastly different from you. However, while attending Sandburg I was able to partner, befriend and be supported by individuals from places like Scotland, Brazil, Jamaica and multiple states, giving me the opportunity to see what life was like outside of a small town and all that I could do.

“Sandburg gave me the time to mature, grow and get to know myself in a way I didn’t know possible, and for that, I will be forever grateful. I had the pleasure of taking dual credit classes while attending high school and being exposed to higher education at an early age. During this time, I knew I wasn’t quite ready to leave home. Sandburg gave me a home for the next two years until I knew I was prepared and ready to take on my undergraduate degree at Illinois State University. After graduating from ISU in 2019, I’ve been successful in climbing the corporate ladder and moving across the country to Denver. I wouldn’t have been able to accomplish all the things I have without the love and support Sandburg gave me.”

Sandburg honors 2025 Faculty, Adjunct Faculty, Staff Member of the Year Award winners

Sandburg honors 2025 Faculty, Adjunct Faculty, Staff Member of the Year Award winners

Sandburg recognized the 2025 winners for Faculty of the Year, Adjunct Faculty of the Year and Staff Member of the Year during its 57th annual commencement Thursday evening on the Galesburg campus.

Jennifer Wright was selected as Faculty of the Year, Becky Echelberger was named Adjunct Faculty of the Year and Valerie Hinderliter was chosen as Staff Member of the Year.

2025 Faculty of the Year
Jennifer Wright
Part of the Sandburg faculty since 2014, Jennifer Wright serves as an associate professor of English as well as the college’s English coordinator and honors program coordinator.

Wright holds a bachelor’s in English and a master’s in American & British literature from Northern Illinois University, and she has more than 20 years of experience in higher education. Wright’s course load regularly includes Freshman Composition, Introduction to Composition and a variety of literature classes.

“I have absolutely loved this class, and it is easily my favorite course I have taken at Sandburg,” one of Wright’s students wrote in nominating her.

Wright was instrumental in Sandburg being awarded a developmental education grant from the Illinois Community College Board. She led the formation of the college’s English lab and piloted a transitional English course to remove economic barriers while providing a welcoming space for developmental students.

“The writing and reading load is pretty rigorous in my classes, but I feel like my students take on the challenge,” Wright said. “They always convey that they're excited about their readings and can't believe how meaningful they are. I feel the excitement in my classrooms, and I’m touched to know that somebody would go out of their way to nominate me.”

Wright has also volunteered for several years as a judge for Sandburg’s annual poetry contest. She’s a member of the American Association for Women in Community Colleges and the Modern Language Association. Wright lives in Macomb with her husband, Neil, and their two sons, Leo (8) and Charlie (6).

“I try to teach my classes in a way where I imagine what kind of classes I would want my kids to take in the future,” Wright said. “I want them to have books in their hands. I want them to be reading some of the best literature there is. I want them talking with their peers in the classroom, and I want them to be comfortable debating with one another and being respectful at the same time.”

2025 Adjunct Faculty of the Year
Becky Echelberger
A 2006 graduate of Sandburg’s dental hygiene program, Becky Echelberger has been an adjunct clinic instructor in that field at the college since 2014.

Echelberger’s passion for teaching oral hygiene goes beyond the classroom and clinic. She annually visits elementary schools in her hometown of Kewanee to present to children on the importance of dental health and safety. Echelberger has included students in the dental hygiene program on those visits in recent years. She’s also worked with local health departments to complete oral cancer screenings for area residents.

“All of our instructors are there for us, but Ms. Echelberger has always been patient and kind,” one student said in their nomination of Echelberger. “She will stay after clinic to help us figure things out and take extra time to help calm us down and figure things out. I’m so grateful to her and couldn't do this without her.”

In addition to teaching at Sandburg, Echelberger works as a dental hygienist at The Dental Group of Galesburg. She lives in Kewanee with her children, Jubilee and Will.

“It keeps the little fire burning in me,” Echelberger said of her reaction upon hearing about the award. “Sometimes you don't know if you're making a difference or making that big of an impact on students. Then you get an email saying you're nominated for this, and it's like, ‘Oh my gosh, wow. I am getting through to them.’ I just feel honored and fortunate.”

2025 Staff Member of the Year
Valerie Hinderliter
A Sandburg alumna, Valerie Hinderliter has worked at the college since October 2021 and serves as its health professions support specialist. In her role, Hinderliter uses her organizational skills to assist faculty, administrators and students in the nursing, radiologic technology, medical assisting, dental hygiene and mortuary science programs as well as Sandburg’s nursing assistant course.

“I really do enjoy my job a lot,” Hinderliter said. “When I started, all the people in my position for the other departments were so helpful in figuring things out, and they have been throughout these years. Everybody I work with is the reason I like my job so much.”

Hinderliter graduated from Sandburg in 2015 with an Associate in Applied Science in business administration. Prior to joining the staff at Sandburg, she worked at Kellogg Printing, G&M Distributors and Oak Lane Nursing & Rehab.

“I love that I knew what I came from in having graduated from here,” Hinderliter said. “It was a really good experience going to school here, so coming to work here was a no-brainer.”

Hinderliter lives in Monmouth with her husband, Morley. She has a daughter, Zoey, and four stepchildren: Harley, Chevella, Anastasia and Luke.

MEMORIAL HOSPITAL CELEBRATES MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH AND ENCOURAGES EVERYONE TO TURN AWARENESS INTO ACTION

MEMORIAL HOSPITAL CELEBRATES MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH AND

ENCOURAGES EVERYONE TO TURN AWARENESS INTO ACTION

Carthage, IL – Memorial Hospital is proud to recognize Mental Health Awareness Month this May by embracing the theme “Turn Awareness into Action.” Memorial Hospital is dedicated to supporting patients and local communities in navigating mental health challenges.
“Mental health awareness is just the beginning,” said Brock Stout, LPC, Behavioral Health Coordinator.
“Turning awareness into action means recognizing the signs of mental health challenges, supporting our neighbors, and ensuring that people of all ages feel valued and connected. Together, we can build stronger, more supportive environments for everyone.”
Stout said mental health is a personal journey, but it’s also a movement—you don’t need to be an expert to make a difference. Whether sharing resources, supporting a friend, advocating for better policies, or simply starting conversations, every action counts.
“There are small actions that everyone can do to support the mental health needs in our community. Sharing personal experiences can break down stigma and inspire others to seek help. Stories of resilience and recovery create a powerful ripple effect,” said Valerie Brown, RN, Program Director of Evergreen Center.

Memorial Hospital’s healthcare professionals encourage the community to take action toward protecting mental health and overall well-being. Individuals who are struggling or unsure where to start should connect with their healthcare provider today.

The HCAHPS survey is a national, standardized tool that measures patients perceptions of their hospital experience, including key factors such as communication, responsiveness, and cleanliness. Surveys were conducted with patients who stayed in hospitals between April 1, 2023, and March 31, 2024.
Out of thousands of hospitals nationwide, only 374 received a 5-star rating for cleanliness.
Memorial Hospital is proud to be among this select group, with just 10 hospitals in Illinois
achieving this distinction.
Memorial Hospital is committed to delivering exceptional healthcare experiences, prioritizing quality, safety, and patient satisfaction. For more information about Memorial Hospital and its services, visit mhtlc.org.
