WCAZ Obituary News

June Nellos

June Nellos, 85, of Warsaw, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 2, 2026, at Carthage
Memorial Hospital. During the final weeks of her life, June was lovingly cared for in the home of her son,
Wesley Jobe, surrounded by family and the love of those closest to her.
June was born on August 5, 1941, in Keokuk, Iowa, to Roy and Daisy (Greer) Hawkins. She was raised
on the family farm in rural Argyle, Iowa, and graduated from Argyle High School.
June was first married to Dennis Jobe, and the couple later divorced. She went on to marry George
Nellos, with whom she shared nearly 30 years of marriage.
Throughout her life, June was a hard-working woman who took great pride in the people and places she
became a part of. She was employed at Ducks, a local grocery store in Hamilton, Illinois, before
beginning what would become a long career at Pizza Hut as the manager in Keokuk, Iowa. June worked
at both the original Mall location and the current location, eventually retiring after many years of service.
She was well known as a mentor to many of the people she worked with and left a lasting impression on
those who had the privilege of knowing her.
June had a deep love for reading and the outdoors. Some of her happiest moments could be found sitting
in a hammock in the yard with a good book or taking nature walks with her grandchildren while collecting
geodes. She also enjoyed spending Friday nights dancing with her late husband, George.
June was a fierce advocate for women’s rights and, more broadly, for human rights. She was strong-
willed, compassionate, independent, and never afraid to stand up for what she believed was right.
Above all else, June cherished her family. Her children and grandchildren were her world, and she
devoted countless hours to being a part of their lives as they grew. The memories she created with them
will continue to be treasured by generations to come.
June is survived by her children, Nadine Smith of Montrose, Iowa; Wesley (Julie) Jobe of Hamilton,
Illinois; and Ninette Whippie of Keokuk, Iowa; her grandchildren, Breanna Smith, Jason Smith, Brandon
(Victoria) Whippie, Nicole (Dalton) Miller, Taylor (Dayton) Gibson, Matt (Sam) Riley, Josh Riley, and Caleb
Riley; and her ten great-grandchildren, Brenden, Braylynn, Sylynn, Lilly, Matthew, Maximus, Mary Louise,
Max, Ada June, and Tucker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George Nellos; her daughter, Norine Jobe; her parents, Roy
and Daisy (Greer) Hawkins; her brothers, Leroy Hawkins, Richard Hawkins, Harold “Sonny” Hawkins, and
Charles Hawkins; and her sisters, Betty Hawkins Anderson Tallman, Ruth Hawkins Smith, and Virginia
Riddle.
No funeral services will be held at this time.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society in honor of June, a breast
cancer survivor.
June will be remembered for her strength, her fierce spirit, her love of the outdoors and a good book, her
dedication to those she cared for, and most of all, the love she poured into her family. Her memory will live
on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.

Robert "Bob" David Hendricks

Robert “Bob” David Hendricks

Robert “Bob” David Hendricks, 77, of Marengo, Illinois, went home to be with the Lord on October 1, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. Bob was born July 29, 1949, in Keokuk, Iowa, to Robert Lee and Eulalee (Talbott) Hendricks. He was raised in Warsaw, Illinois, along the Mississippi River and graduated
from Warsaw High School in 1967. Although life eventually took him to Marengo, Warsaw and the river always remained close to his heart.
On June 17, 1972, Robert married Kathryn K. Kopsell. For more than 54 years, Kathy was his devoted and loving wife, faithfully by his side through all of life’s seasons.
Together they raised three loving children: Eric Hendricks, Vicki (Nick) Oleferchik, and Joy Dennis.
Bob spent many years working as a purchasing agent for Morton Salt in Woodstock, Illinois, before his retirement. Outside of work, he was happiest enjoying the things he
loved most. An avid outdoorsman, Bob loved fishing, hunting—especially deer hunting—and simply being outdoors. He was also an avid writer who enjoyed putting his thoughts, stories, and experiences into words.
Above all, Bob was a man of strong Christian faith who loved his family deeply. He took great pride in his children and grandchildren and was a proud grandfather to Brendan
(Kourtney), Sophia, Maximus, Elijah, Samuel, Ava, and Kai. He was also joyfully awaiting the arrival of his first great-grandchild, Tatum.
In addition to his wife, children, and grandchildren, Bob is survived by his sister, Elizabeth Hendricks Phillips (Daryl Brackensick); his brother-in-law, Pinky Johnson; and
many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and friends.
He was preceded in death by an infant child; his parents, Robert Lee and Eula Lee Hendricks; his sisters, Mary Jeanette and Carolyn; and his beloved Grandma Talbott, who held a very special place in his heart. Though Bob built his life and raised his family in Marengo, his roots in Warsaw and his love for the river never left him. It is fitting that he will return to Warsaw to rest in the place that always held such a special place in his heart. His family finds comfort knowing that as he returns to the earthly place he called home, he has already found his
eternal home with the Lord. Visitation will be held Saturday, October 10, 2026, from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. at Printy Funeral Home in Warsaw, Illinois. A funeral service celebrating Bob’s life and faith will begin at 11:00 a.m., with burial to follow at Oakland Cemetery in Warsaw.

Learning was always important to Eloise. She attended Burnside Grade School and
one year of high school in Burnside before it consolidated with Carthage. She then
transferred to Nauvoo High School where she graduated. She would have been the
Valedictorian of her class but was denied that recognition because she had not attended all
four years at Nauvoo. Eloise continued her education at Carthage College, graduating in
1949 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in education. Eloise taught first in Ferris and then in
Burnside. After ten years as an elementary education teacher, she returned to college at

career were spent in the Nauvoo-Colusa district.
Eloise was chosen by the Hancock County Retired Teachers Association for
recognition as the 1999 Retired Teacher of the Year. Finding that retirement was not for
her, Eloise started a preschool in the Burnside Methodist Church and operated it for two
years.
She was an active member of the Burnside Methodist Church where she played the
piano and organ for over 70 years. She was also active in the United Methodist Women
organization. She served as secretary of the Hancock County Retired Teachers Association
and as a volunteer reader at the Hancock County Nursing Home.
As much as she loved teaching, Eloise's greatest joy came from being a mother,
grandmother and great-grandmother. She also loved flower gardening and reading. She
was an example of faith and grace to all who knew her.
Eloise is survived by four sons, Roger (Karen) of Carthage, Rodney of Newman,
Illinois, Greg (Bonnie Helms) of Carthage, Jeffery of Burnside and one daughter, Rachel

Thomas Weirather

Thomas Edward Weirather, 76 passed away on September 20, 2026, at River Hills Village, leaving behind a family who deeply loved him and will forever remember his quiet strength and enduring spirit. He was the son of Phyllis and Harold Weirather, who preceded him in death.

Life was not easy for Thomas. He faced many hardships and struggles, yet he met each one with determination and dignity. He never complained and always tried to make his own way, confronting challenges with a steady resilience that spoke louder than words. His strength was never loud or showy — it was humble, unwavering, and deeply admirable.

Thomas found comfort in life’s simpler moments. He was an avid fan of automobile racing and had a special fondness for watching the Weather Channel, staying keenly aware of conditions near and far. He loved sharing weather updates with his brothers and sisters, keeping everyone informed and connected — one of the small but meaningful ways he showed his care for family.

He also enjoyed hunting and farming, pursuits that reflected his appreciation for the outdoors, hard work, and self-reliance. These interests were more than hobbies; they were expressions of who he was and how he chose to live.

Though his journey was difficult at times, Thomas remained steadfast and independent. His life reminds us that strength can be quiet, perseverance can be gentle, and love can be shown through simple, thoughtful acts.

Thomas is survived by Sue (Paul) Merschman, Kristine Smith, Betty Harple, Don Weirather, Steve (Theresa) Weirather, and Victor Weirather. He is also lovingly remembered by many cousins, nieces, and nephews, each of whom held a special place in his heart.

Kenneth "Jerry" Gerald McCredie

Kenneth "Jerry" Gerald McCredie, 92, peacefully passed away on August 29, 2026 at his home in Eustis FL.

Jerry was born May 16, 1934. He married the love of his life, Barbara Jones, on December 31, 1952, beginning a partnership that would span more than 73 years. The two first met while out with a group of friends. Afterward, Barbara went home and told her mother that she was going to marry him. She was right.

Jerry and Barb were, quite simply, a package deal. Through more than seven decades of marriage, they built a family, businesses, friendships, adventures and a lifetime of memories together. Where you found one, you could usually expect to find the other.

Jerry began his working life at a Phillips 66 filling station and purchased the station around 1953. Never one to leave a car alone for very long, he also operated a mechanic's garage from his home, working on cars for others while beginning what would become a lifelong career - and passion - centered around automobiles.

In 1960, Jerry went to work as the head mechanic at Jamison Chevrolet. A few years later, he began building the original building for McCredie Motors. In 1968, he opened the Dodge dealership, later adding Chevrolet, Oldsmobile and Chrysler franchises during the 1980s.

His entrepreneurial spirit didn't stop there. In 1977, Jerry opened Major Muffler as a muffler shop and used-car lot. In 1983, the family purchased the Skylark Drive-In Theatre and operated it together until a storm destroyed the theater in 1986. The land was later donated to Keokuk Little League and today is known as McCredie Park.

Long before owning dealerships, Jerry had discovered another way to enjoy cars: racing them.

He began racing in 1955 using the family car - much to Barb's dismay. He raced jalopies before moving into IMCA racing and continued competing for approximately five years before the demands of building his automobile business brought his racing years to an end.

Retirement didn't do much to cure Jerry of his obsession with cars. He spent countless hours working on vehicles for friends and family, but perhaps especially for himself. He built two 1955 Chevrolets from parts, including one from the frame up, and was in the process of restoring a 1966 Corvette. He accomplished most of these projects through decades of knowledge and ingenuity, without the benefit of manuals, internet searches or instructional videos.

When Jerry wasn't working on a car, there was a good chance he could be found on a golf course. An avid golfer, he played regularly with a group of longtime friends for many years. And because Jerry was also an enthusiastic gambler, there was naturally money involved.

Jerry loved to gamble anywhere and anytime, with the craps table holding a special place among his favorites. Like so many parts of his life, gambling wasn't only about the game - it was also about the longtime friends alongside him.

Jerry was ornery, bullheaded and an accomplished jokester who delighted in agitating his friends and family. One of his favorite sayings summed up his straightforward approach to life perfectly: "Money talks and bullshit walks."

He also possessed the rare ability to talk to anyone, anywhere, at any time. Jerry truly did not know a stranger. A quick conversation could easily end with Jerry having made another friend. Beneath the jokes and stubbornness was a man who would do whatever he could to help someone in need.

Jerry was a member of Kiwanis, the Elks, the Keokuk Yacht Club, Southside Boat Club, First Lutheran Church of Keokuk and The Cross in Eustis.

Jerry and Barbara's greatest legacy is the family that grew from the life they built together.

He is survived by his beloved wife of more than 73 years, Barbara McCredie; their children, Gerald "Jerry" Kenneth McCredie and his wife, Leisa "Loter" McCredie, and Patty McCredie; four grandchildren, Aimee Rippenkroeger (Jason), Courtney McCredie (Bobby Kolkovich), Morgan Schafer, and Jordan McCredie Harvey (Andrew Harvey); great-grandchildren Kyler Rippenkroeger, Austin Rippenkroeger, Henry Rippenkroeger, Hannah Rippenkroeger, Spencer Rippenkroeger, Elle McCredie, Kendra McCredie, Halas Kolkovich, Logan Kolkovich, Lincoln Kolkovich, Gracie Schafer, Lola Schafer, Bently McCredie-Harvey, Camden McCredie-Harvey, Wyatt Harvey and Paisley Harvey; and great-great-grandson Grayson Padilla.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Gertrude "Luebke" Anderson, in 1994.

Jerry was a friend to many - and "many" may still be an understatement. Those who knew him will have their own Jerry stories: stories about cars, golf, gambling, business, jokes, arguments, favors, conversations and the countless ways he found to make himself unforgettable.

He built cars. He built businesses. He built friendships everywhere he went. Most importantly, alongside Barb, he built a family and a life together that lasted more than seven decades.

Jerry will be deeply missed by those who loved him, greatly missed by the many people fortunate enough to call him a friend, and undoubtedly talked about for many years to come.

A celebration of life will be held at 3 p.m., Tuesday, September 29, 2026 at Southside Boat Club, 625 Mississippi Drive, Keokuk, with family meeting with friends at that time.

The Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, IA is assisting the family with arrangements.
