Keith Thomas “Slink” Rand, 70, of Carthage, passed away Friday evening, February 21, 2020, in Torrance, California.
Slink was born December 3, 1949, the son of Harold N. and Gertrude (Dunn) Rand in Keokuk, Iowa. On October 13, 1981, he was united in marriage to Jeri Moore. He was an Engineer for the Hancock County Highway Department for many years, retiring in 2007. Slink was a lifelong musician, guitarist and song writer.
Slink is survived by his wife, Jeri, of Carthage; two daughters, Brandy (Oscar Varela) Rand of Los Angeles, California and Brittney (Cole) Carson of Los Angeles, California; one grandson, Oliver Rand Varela; one sister, Joyce Parker of Pomona, California; a brother-in-law, Danny (JoAnn) Moore of Rome, Iowa; father and mother-in-law, Michael and Virginia Castle of St. Augustine, Illinois; six nieces and nephews: Talia Adams, Anthony (Juliet) Adams, Shannon Hall, Wade Bryan, Haley Bryan, and Hillary Bryan; and twelve great nieces and nephews: Gizelle Adams, Cyrus Rawlings, Shaylee Rawlings, Darius Hall, Roni Hall, Jaevyon Bess, Easton Bryan, Jaecia Bess, Hadley Bryan, Jaeceon Bess, Halo Bess, and Brivey Adams.
He was preceded in death by his parents and daughter, Angela.

Phillip W. “Phil” Pyles, 78, of Warsaw, passed away on Monday, February 24, 2020, at Unity Point Health in Keokuk, Iowa.
Phil was born on March 7, 1941, in Stillwell, Illinois, the son of Alva Sommers and Hattie Margaret (Goodrich) Pyles. On February 21, 1962, he was united in marriage to his wife of 58 years, Patricia “Patty” Grisham, at Trinity United Methodist Church in Warsaw, Illinois. She survives.
Phil was employed in waste treatment and boiler operations at Armour-Dial for over thirty years. He also worked briefly at Ortho Chemical in Fort Madison and All Star Dairy in Keokuk. He was also a long-time member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Warsaw. Phil was an active member of the Warsaw community, serving on the school board for twelve years, serving on the city council, coaching girls’ softball, and upholding a membership in the American Legion. Phil could often be found eating out with his friends or attending social events. In his free time, Phil enjoyed bowling, golfing, and watching or listening to sports games. He was notorious for drinking copious amounts of coffee and catching a quick nap whenever or wherever he could. He will always be remembered for his love for his family and his dogs. Phil proudly served his country in the United States Air Force and was honorably discharged.
Phil is survived by his wife Patty Pyles of Warsaw; two daughters: Kimberly Cameron and Michelle (James) Coan; two siblings: Margaret Boydoy and Charles Pyles; four grandchildren: Jennifer (Ryan) Robinson, Matthew Cameron, Blake Coan and Madalynn Coan; two great-grandchildren: Eleanor and Juliette; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Phil is preceded in death by his parents and six siblings: Ronald Dean Pyles, Jerald Pyles, Lillian Lock, Norma Jennings, Betty Vantine and Dorothy Johnson,
Funeral Services will be held at 10 am on Friday, February 28, 2020, at Printy Funeral Home in Warsaw, with burial to follow at Keokuk National Cemetery in Keokuk, Iowa. Graveside military honors will be rendered by the Hancock County Honor Guard and the United States Air Force. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Thursday from 2 to 7 pm, with family meeting friends from 5 to 7 pm.

Darlene Hartweg, 91, of rural Hamilton, passed away on Saturday, February 22, 2020, at Silver Maple
Care Center in Carthage. Arrangements are pending at Printy Funeral Home in Hamilton.
Darlene Lois Gerhardt Hartweg was born August 3, 1928 at Sacred Heart Hospital in Fort Madison, Iowa
to Ben and Mildred Gerhardt. After the death of both of her parents, she made her home with an aunt
and uncle, Helen and Walter Gerhardt.
Mrs. Hartweg graduated from Nauvoo High School, completed a summer course at Western Illinois
University required for an emergency teaching certificate due to WWII. Then she taught one year at
Columbia Grade School, which was a one room school house up to eighth grade.
She married Robert Hartweg on May 25, 1947 at Appanoose Presbyterian Church, Niota, Ill. They were
married for 68 years which they spend farming together.
Mrs. Hartweg was a member of Golden's Point Christian Church where, in her younger years, she was a
deaconess, Sunday School and Bible School teacher.
She is survived by two children, Arthur Edward (Janis) Hartweg of Hamilton and Sandra Sue Barker of
Keokuk; five grandchildren, Aaron Barker, Bethany Yates, Lydia Harlan, Benjamin (Sarah) Hartweg and
Isaiah (Martha) Hartweg; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Hartweg was preceded in death by her parents, her husband (Robert Hartweg), a sister, Bonnie
George of Corona, California, a brother, Bill Gerhardt of Niota, Illinois, and a double cousin, Gene
Gerhardt of Niota, Illinois.
Darlene enjoyed being a wife to her lifelong companion, a mother, and a grandmother. Darlene also
enjoyed working outside whether it was farming or tending to her beautiful flowers.
Darlene’s life will be celebrated with a funeral service at 10:30 am on Friday, February 28, 2020, at
Golden’s Point Christian Church in rural Hamilton, with burial to follow at Oakwood Cemetery in
Hamilton. Visitation will be held at Printy Funeral Home in Hamilton on Thursday from 2 to 7 pm, with
family meeting friends from 5 to 7 pm.

1957-2020
Howard Francis Hymes, 62 of Denmark IA, died Wednesday February 19, 2020 at his home after an extended illness.
He was born May 26, 1957 in Fort Madison, IA the son of Charles and Cecilia Sherwood Hymes Sr. On July 10, 1979, he married Tina Troja, they later divorced.
Howard worked for Gleasons for many years, Feinberg's and Sheaffer Memorial Golf Course in maintenance and greens keeper. He loved to hunt and go arrowhead hunting. Finding morel mushrooms was easy for him and shared his finds with his family.
Survivors include two daughters, Linda (Lyndon) Vacek and Michelle Wagner, both of New London IA, one son, Bradley (Jessica) Jarvis of Milwaukie, OR, one brother Warren Hymes of Salem IA, five sisters, Marcie Duval of Hannacroix, NY, Gwen New of Leesburg FL, Joan Nelson of Fort Madison, IA, Charlotte Sanders of Richards, TX and Dianna Mincks of Fort Madison, IA, three grandsons, Collin and Ethan Collis and Ryan Thebeau, one granddaughter, Chloe Collis and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, two sisters, two nieces, three nephews and two great nephews.
Per his wishes there will be no funeral or visitation.
There will be a celebration of life March 1, 2020 at 4:30 p.m. at the Corner Tap in West Point, IA.

Dean R. Melvin, 87, of Burlington, IA passed away 6:45 Sunday morning, February 23, 2020. He was born on April 1, 1932 near Raritan, IL, the son of Paul and Blanche (Links) Melvin.
Surviving is his wife of 43 years, Beverly (Foster) Melvin.
Dean accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior at the age of 14. He was a lifelong member of Old Bedford Christian Church near Blandinsville, Illinois where he served as an elder for 24 years and 8 years as chairman of the board. and most recently was a member of Parkside Baptist Church in Burlington, Iowa.
Dean farmed for over 50 years near Blandinsville, IL He enlisted in the Naval Reserves in 1951 and was honorably discharged in 1954. He was an avid reader, loved flying airplanes and once built and flew his own ultralight.
Besides his wife, Beverly, survivors include 3 sons and one daughter: Mark (Audrey) Melvin, Montrose, IA, David (Bev) Melvin, LaHarpe, IL, Terry (Teresa) Melvin, Plymouth, IL; daughter, Kelly (Larry) Williams, South Pasadena, FL; 4 step-children: Susan Duke of Cantrall, IL, Jeff (Lisa) Hardy of Colchester, IL, Nancy (Glenn) Braker of New Berlin, IL of Sondra (Les) Jones of Apopka, FL. Also surviving are 9 grandchildren, 9 step-grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, and 5 step- great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; infant granddaughter: Carey Melvin, great-great daughter: Alexis Miller, and step-grandson: Mitchell Williams; one sister: Doris Allison and one brother: Lester Melvin.
Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 29, 2020 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe with Randy Spiker officiating. Military Rites will follow at the funeral home. Friends may call after 2:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m.
Cremation will be entrusted to Banks & Beals following the service. Inurnment will be at a later date in LaHarpe Cemetery.

Jeanne Vaughn
Norma Jeanne Vaughn, of Lomax, IL, passed away Friday night, February 21, 2020, at Oak Lane Nursing and Rehab Center in Stronghurst, Illinois.
Jeanne was born July 8, 1928, in Pontoosuc, IL, the daughter of H. Ray and Nellie M. (Little) Clark. On April 3, 1955, she married Donald R. Vaughn, of Lomax.
Jeanne was a 1946 graduate of Dallas City High School. Following high school, she worked in the cashier department of Sheaffer Pen Company in Ft. Madison, IA. After marriage, Jeanne became a homemaker and enjoyed being outdoors and tending to her garden. She served as a Lomax Township election judge and was a lifelong fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and NASCAR racing. Jeanne was an active member of the Lomax Christian Church. Her greatest joys in life were her husband, children, and grandchildren.
Survivors include Don, her husband of 64 years, and children Donna (Brian) Anderson of Fishers, IN, Diana (Dale) Helling of Iowa City, IA, Denise (Chris) Hanley of Peoria, IL, and Lance (Danielle) Vaughn, of Altoona, IA. Also surviving are her grandchildren, Drew Helling, Meagan and Erin Hanley, and Katie and Lauren Vaughn, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Jeanne was preceded in death by her parents; sister and brother-in law, Bernice and Wesley Dunn; and nephew, Clark Dunn.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm, Sunday, March 1, 2020, at Banks and Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City, with Pastor Maxine Dennison officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm until time of services at the funeral home. Per her wishes, Jeanne was cremated, and inurnment at Crane Cemetery in Lomax will be held at a later date. Deanna Rose Osborne
1951-2020
Deanna Rose Osborne, 69, of Blue Grass, IA, formerly of Keokuk, IA, died on Wednesday, February 19, 2020 at the Select Specialty Hospital in Davenport, IA.
She was born on February 15, 1951 the daughter of Eston and Ellen Dunn Rude. She was the oldest of six children. Deanna graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School with the Class of 1969.
Deanna was united in marriage to Maurice Henry Osborne on December 12, 1970 in Mt. Pleasant, IA. He survives.
Other survivors are two sons, Bradly Osborne of Blue Grass, IA and Maurice Charles Osborne of Chicago, IL, two daughters, Carol Greene of Davenport, IA and Linda Meo (Kohei) of Yokosuka, Japan, five grandchildren, Nannie Hopping (Greggory) of Aledo, IL, Freya Greene of Davenport, Sr. Airman Kitrina Thorne (Sr. Airman Ryan Thorne) of Alamogordo, New Mexico, Sakura Amanda Meo and Takeshi Henry Meo of Japan, and two great-grandchildren, Sora and Midori Hopping. She will be missed by a large family of brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, cousins and more.
She was proceeded in death by her parents and one brother.
Deanna loved to sing and had a wonderful voice. She often sang at events and venues in the community. She was artistic and could create her own patterns and designs for the blankets she crocheted. Many family members received blankets from her and they will forever be cherished. She also made intricate doilies, doll dresses and butterflies. She taught her grandchildren the joy of crocheting. Above all she was proud to be a housewife and was devoted to caring for her husband and children.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, IA. Burial will be in the Keokuk National Cemetery.
Visitation will be held prior to the service from 9-11 a.m., Monday, at the funeral home with family meeting with friends at that time.

Mary Lee Johnson, 96, of Carthage, passed away at 6:05 P.M. Tuesday, February
18, 2020, at her home in Carthage.
Mary Lee was born August 10, 1923, the daughter of Lawrence and Helen
(Mesick) Swain in Pilot Grove Township, Illinois. She attended Carthage High
School graduating in 1941. She then attended Western Illinois University
receiving her teaching certificate and taught school during WWII. On March 2,
1947, she was united in marriage to Robert Johnson at the First United Methodist
Church in Carthage. He preceded her in death in 2015. Mary Lee had worked at
the school and church as a secretary and was also well known in the area for her
skills as a seamstress. She was an active member of the First United Methodist
Church in Carthage.
Mary is survived by three children, Roger (Linda) Johnson of Albany, Illinois, Linda
Sue Johnson of Carthage and Patty (Michael) Wiegers of Lewistown, Illinois; five
grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; a sister, Barbara Johnson of Jefferson,
Wisconsin; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert; a son, Larry Edward
Johnson; and a brother, William Swain.

Eileen Marrietta Lehr, 102, passed away at 8:20 P.M. Tuesday, February 18, 2020 at the Montebello Care Center in Hamilton.
Eileen was born November 25, 1917, the daughter of Joseph F. and Minnie (Avise) Paulas in Dallas Township, Illinois. She graduated from Colusa High School. On January 1, 1937, she was united in marriage to A. E. Lehr in Lancaster, Missouri. He preceded her in death in 2003. Eileen had worked with her husband at Lehr and Clark Insurance Agency in Carthage, was a long-time employee of Dr. Korte in Carthage and was well-known for cooking, especially cakes for weddings and other events. She was a Life Member of the Eagle’s Club and a 100 year member of Rebekah. She also belonged to the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Red Hat Ladies.
Eileen is survived by a daughter, Betty Twaddle, of Carthage; a son, James Edward (Anne) Lehr of Osage Beach, Missouri; a daughter-in-law, Linda Lehr of Shreveport, Louisiana; son-in-law, Jeff Clark of Carthage; nine grandchildren, Wendy Kelly, Keith Lehr, Jr., Steve (Darla) Clark, Teri (Kelly Sears)Vance, Rodney Twaddle, Mark Scarbrough, Deann (Gary) Waddell, T. J. Lehr, and Brittany (Chris) Smith; twenty great grandchildren; and ten great great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, A. E. Lehr; son, Keith Lehr, Sr.; daughter, Karen Clark; daughter-in-law, Patsy Lehr; son-in-law, Dick Twaddle; grandson, Thomas Twaddle; a brother, Lloyd Paulas; and an identical twin sister, Maxine Terry.

Betty Sue Riter
1943-2020
Betty Sue Riter, 76 of Keokuk, IA died Monday, February 17, 2020 at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City, IA.
She was born on May 7, 1943 in Keokuk, IA the daughter of Wilfred W. and Lela Mary Seward Riter.
Betty graduated from Keokuk High School with the Class of 1961 and the Burlington Business College in 1962.
Betty had been employed by Thomas Truck, Hoerner Box/Stone Container in Keokuk for twenty-eight years, from 1972 until the company closed in 2000. She then worked at the Lee County Recorder’s Office until her retirement in 2006.
She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Keokuk.
Betty loved auto racing. She was an avid Iowa Hawkeye, St. Louis Cardinal and NASCAR fan and also a fan of local racing. Betty was part of her brother, Joe’s and her nephew, Jeff Johnson’s pit crew team when they ran locally. Betty also enjoyed family genealogy and keeping scrapbooks for her family.
She is survived by one brother, Joe (Melody) Riter of Keokuk, one sister, Katie Downey of Kahoka, MO, one nephew, Jeff (Christy) Johnson and one niece, Jennifer (Jamie) Ross.
She was preceded in death by her parents and several aunts and uncles.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, IA with Pastor Dixie Laube officiating. Burial will be in the Revere Cemetery in Revere, MO.
Visitation will be held prior to the service from 10-11 a.m., Saturday, at the funeral home with family meeting with friends at that time.

Carolyn Jean (LeMaster) Potts, 77 of Keokuk, died Saturday, February 15, 2020 at Baptist Health in Lexington, KY.
She was born December 4, 1942 in Alexandria, MO to Alfred and Hazel (Dochterman) LeMaster. Carolyn graduated from Kahoka High School in 1960, and from the Air Age Institute Airline Training School in Kansas City, MO.
Carolyn was united in marriage with John Potts in September of 1961 and together they were blessed with two sons; Michael and Andrew.
Carolyn lead a life devoted to family and faith, and was cherished by many.
She is survived by her two sons Michael (Julie) Potts of Versailles, KY, Andrew (Larisa) Potts of Amherst, WI; five grandchildren Amanda (Joe) Hahn, Ashley Davenport, Abby Potts, Alexis Potts, Adam Potts; three great grandchildren; Hayden Hahn, Remington Davenport, and Beau Davenport; her sister Sharon (John) Haisch; nieces and nephews Kala Haisch, April Wilkens, Tiny (Randy) Stott, Dennis LeMaster, Holly (Kevin) Bailey; and several beloved great nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, William, Stanley, and Jack; and two sister-in-laws, Colleen LeMaster and Norma LeMaster.

Emory S. Quesenberry, Jr, 87, of Carthage, formerly of Hamilton, fondly known as
“Quezy”, passed away Thursday, February 13, 2020 at 11:45 PM, at The Elms Care
Center in Macomb.
Emory was born January 4, 1933, in Plymouth, Illinois, the son of Emory S. and Eva
V. (Allen) Quesenberry. He served in the United States Army as a Corporal during
the Korean Conflict. On September 2, 1950, he was united in marriage to Patricia
A. Downey. She preceded him in death on December 12, 2004. He was a heavy
equipment operator with Local# 649 in Peoria, retiring in 1996. Emory was a
member of the Assembly of God Church and the Masonic Lodge #465.
Emory is survived by two daughters, Vicki (Richard) Hendrickson of Carthage, IL
and Brenda Gibson of Macomb, IL; four grandchildren, Nicole (Chris) Gellatly,
Shannon L. (Drew) Brown, Chelsea L. (Michael) Roehrenbeck and Johnathan
(Nicole) L. Hendrickson; one great grandson, Archer Brown; and several nieces
and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Patricia; a brother, Robert
Chester “Bud” Quesenberry; and a sister, Ruby Chockley.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, February 20, 2020, at Printy

John Meinert Johnson, 84, of Basco, passed away at 4:15 PM on Friday, February 14, 2020, at his home in Basco.
John M. was born November 16, 1935, the son of Jurgen and Florence (Huls) Johnson in Basco. In 1966 he was united in marriage to Myrna Rampley in Wayne City, Illinois. He was a life-long farmer and a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church near Basco. He enjoyed farming and gardening with his wife of 50 years. He enjoyed watching his girls play softball and going on Sunday drives with his family looking at crops and listening to the St. Louis Cardinal games on the radio. He and Myrna would play shuffleboard tournaments at Hancock County taverns on Sunday afternoons where they often took 1st place. He also liked playing Pitch with his friends in Basco. John M. was a quiet and a man of few words but when he did speak people listened.
John M. is survived by his wife, Myrna, of Basco; two daughters, Kathy (James) Manley of Middletown, Iowa and Pamela Johnson of Basco; a grandson, Zachary Manley; one brother, Michael (Virginia) Johnson of Basco; and a sister, Darlene (Neil) Pfeifferling of Hamilton; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mary E. Mower, 93, of Park Place Elder Living, Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, formerly of Dallas City, Illinois passed away Wednesday, February 12, 2020 at Park Place.
Mary was born on October 12, 1926 in Lorraine, Illinois the daughter of Luther and Mabel Hitz Stolp. On December 19, 1953 she married George “Teamy” Mower in Palmyra, Missouri. He preceded her in death on November 12, 1982.
Mrs. Mower worked for 41 years IAAP in Middletown, Iowa. She was a member of the Grace Bible Church in Dallas City and was a former resident of the Bickford of Burlington. Mary enjoyed gardening, flowers, playing bingo, crocheting and traveling with George. She especially enjoyed her grandchildren. She was an avid Chicago Cubs fan.
Survivors include one son: Floyd (Judy) Akers of Burlington, Iowa; one daughter: Dorothy (Jack) Haynes of Burlington; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and two sisters: Rachel Jamison of Camden, Illinois and Lucille Weaver of Macomb, Illinois.
She was preceded in death by her husband; one son: Jerry Akers; one step-son: Jack Mower; one sister: Maxine Carper and four brothers: Olin, Keith, Fred and Laurence Eugene Stolp.
The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until 11:45 a.m. Monday, February 17, 2020 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City. A graveside service will follow at 12noon at the Crane Cemetery, Lomax, Illinois. Joan E. Roberts, 85, of Dallas City, IL passed away at 6:55pm Thursday, February 6, 2020 at the Great River Klein Center in West Burlington, IA.
She was born December 13, 1934 in Dallas City, the daughter of Enileme D. and Eleanor Smelser Zern. On June 24, 1955 she married Glen T. Roberts in Carthage, IL. He preceded her in death on July 28, 2010.
Joan worked at Champion Spark Plug in Burlington for 32 years. She was a member of the UAW and the Dallas City First Christian Church. She was also a member and treasurer of the C.W.F.
Surviving are two daughters, Rose (Greg) Dillard of Lake Geneva, WI and Laura (John) Goudschaal of Quincy, IL and two sons, Jeff Roberts of Lomax, IL and Rick (Cherise) Roberts of Chicago, eleven grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and her twin sister, June Ellis of Dallas City.
She was preceded in death by her husband, daughter-in law, Leslie Roberts, three sisters, Kathryn Foglesong, Julia Danner and Jean Duffy and one brother, George Zern.
Services will be held at 12noon Thursday, February 13, 2020 at the Dallas City First Christian Church with Josh Vance officiating. Burial will follow in the Harris Cemetery, near Dallas City. Judith A. “Judy” Ikerd, 80, of Warsaw, IL died Sunday, February 9, 2020 at the Memorial Hospital in Carthage, IL.
She was born April 22, 1939 in Oak Park, IL, the daughter of Alfred and Florence Kuhl Vasey. She graduated from Oak Park High School with the Class of 1957.
On May 7, 1960, Judy was united in marriage to Harold Ikerd in Oak Park, IL. He survives.
She is also survived by two sons, John (Wendy) Ikerd of Elvaston, IL and Mark (Cathy) Ikerd of Camdenton, MO, three daughters, Kimberly (Quent Allen) Gerhardt of Warsaw, Amy Schopf of Gurnee, IL and Lisa “Charlie” (Steve) Seabold of Quincy, IL, twelve grandchildren, Dawn (Jody) Johnson, Christina (David) Rogers, Bradley Ikerd, Jeremy Ikerd, Jake (SaraBeth) Ikerd, Chris Hageman, Jeff Hageman, Nathan (Tiffany) Allen, Joshua Schopf, Henry Schopf, Clara (Clayton) Gabel, Brendan Seabold and Tyler Seabold, ten great-grandchildren, David, Colton, Harley, Christopher, Rosalie, Bailey, Carrley, Riley, Cayden and Clark on the way, one brother, Tom (Judy) Vasey of Downers Grove, IL.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Robert Vasey and one sister-in-law, Phyllis Vasey.
Prior to her marriage to Harold, Judy had worked at the Mars Candy Company and sent Harold many candy bars while he was in the service. She had also worked at a bank. She also raised AKC dogs and offered a dog grooming service.
Judy was a faithful member of the First Christian Church in Keokuk, a member of the Keosippi Kickers, the Aquacizers at the Horner YMCA and the AKC Kennel Club.
She enjoyed gardening and her favorite thing to grow was tomatoes. She also enjoyed raising chickens, watching and feeding the hummingbirds, collecting Barbie dolls and other dolls and various knick-knacks. Judy had raised and cared for many dogs and especially loved her two Shelties, Dolly and Cuddles who were her faithful companions. She was an avid fan of Elvis Presley and Portillos Restaurant. Judy’s priority and greatest joy was her family. She was a wonderful cook and loved to feed everyone. Judy was a devoted wife, mother and homemaker and who greatly enjoyed caring for her family and making their house a wonderful home.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday at the First Christian Church in Keokuk with Joel Schlatter and Jake Ikerd officiating. Burial will be in the Elvaston Cemetery in Elvaston, IL.
Visitation will be held after 1 p.m., Thursday at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk with the family meeting with friends from 6 – 8 p.m.

Hazle Ruth Kern, 101, of Carthage passed away at 9:37 AM Saturday morning,
February 8, 2020, at the Montebello Care Center in Hamilton.
Hazle was born December 7, 1918, the daughter of George Aaron and Ruth
(Frounfelter) Wells near Stronghurst, Illinois in Henderson County. In 1938 she
was united in marriage to Charles Foster Lovell. He preceded her in death. On
January 28, 1956, she was united in marriage to Howard Joseph Kern in Carthage,
Illinois. He preceded her in death in 1999. Hazle had farmed twenty-two years
with Charles and Howard. She then started a new career at Memorial Hospital in
Carthage as a nurse’s aide for nine years. In 1965 she began working at Shellor-
Globe in Keokuk retiring in 1983. Hazle enjoyed fishing, travel and reading.
Hazle is survived by her daughter, Debra (Melvin) Moore of Carthage; two
granddaughters, Ruth (Lovell) Reuther and Kathy Doyle; nieces and several great
nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; two children, Janet Lovell
and Charles “Butch” Lovell; one brother and two sisters.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 A.M. Monday, February 17 th , 2020 at
Printy Funeral Home in Carthage. Private inurnment will be held in Moss Ridge
Cemetery in Carthage at a later date. Memorials may be directed to the donor’s

1951 -2020
Milton C. Garrison, 68 of Keokuk, IA died Sunday, January 26, 2020 at his home.
He is survived by his son, Shawn Garrison, two siblings, Sharon Randolph and Eugene Edwards, both of Kalona, IA and several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family and sent to the Vigen Memorial Home, 1328 Concert St., Keokuk, IA.

Thomas James “Tom” Sanderson, 66, of Warsaw, passed away on Friday, February 7, 2020, at his home in Warsaw.
Tom was born on June 9, 1953, in Keokuk, Iowa, the son of James Wilson and Helen Pauline (Phillips) Sanderson. On November 5, 1997, he was united in marriage to Hazel Irene Wiese in Warsaw. She survives.
A member of the American Legion, Tom proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1971 to 1974. He was also a member of Burnside Christian Church. Tom was employed as a carpenter, and enjoyed woodworking for his clients and his family. He was always tinkering with something, and always kept busy. Some of his favorite hobbies included grilling, watching western shows, watching the eagles at the river, yardwork and gardening his tomatoes. Above all else, Tom valued the time he spent with his family. He loved his grandchildren with all his heart. Tom was truly an inspiration to everyone he met.
Tom is survived by his wife Hazel Sanderson of Warsaw; his son Chris (Ashley) Sanderson of Keokuk, Iowa; two daughters: Nichol Foutch of Keokuk and April Quint of Fayette, Missouri; his sister Carol (Larry) Lemley of Carthage, Illinois; two brothers: Mark Sanderson of Quincy, Illinois, and Ron Sanderson of Camp Point, Illinois; his half-brother Fred (Elaine) Shoemaker of San Antonio, Texas; his sister-in-law Donna Sanderson of Carthage; nine grandchildren: Shannon (Sam), Shania (Dylan) Sarah, Tayrin (Craig) Tayla (Kendall), Donisa, Taygen, Bretty and Jace; three great-grandchildren: Alekay, Aydien and Khyson; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Tom is preceded in death by his parents, his brother Dave, his sister Linda and an infant daughter.
Funeral services will be held at 10 am on Tuesday, February 11, 2020, at Printy Funeral Home in Warsaw, with burial to follow at Keokuk National Cemetery in Keokuk, Iowa. Graveside military honors will be rendered by the Hancock County Honor Guard. Visitation will be held on Monday from 2 to 7 pm, with family meeting friends from 5 to 7 pm at the funeral home.

Joseph M. “Little Joe” Smith, 71, of Dallas City, Illinois passed away Wednesday, February 5, 2020 at the Great River Hospice House, West Burlington.
Joe was born on December 28, 1948 in Monmouth, Illinois, to Harvey and Barbara Hoskins. He was adopted and raised by Raymond and Elizabeth Smith. On September 5, 1981 he married Janice Myers in Las Vegas, Nevada. They later divorced.
Mr. Smith was a 1967 graduate of the Dallas City High School. Joe served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He was awarded two Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart for his service. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and his friends and family. Joe loved to cook.
Survivors include his former wife, Janice of Dallas City; four children: Selina (Vernon) Tucker of Ft. Madison, Iowa, Stacey Pence of LaHarpe, Jason Smith of Dallas City and Ryan (Samantha) Smith of Dallas City; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three brothers: Chris (Billie) Smith of Stronghurst, Illinois, Danny (Lee) Smith of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and Rick Tate; three sisters: Jackie (Larry) Ferguson of Blandinsville, Ramona (David) Desotel of Danville, Iowa and Rhonda Ewing of Ft. Madison.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Steve Hoskins.
A celebration of Joe’s life will be held from 3:00 until 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 12, 2020 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City. Military Rites will be conducted at 6:00 p.m. at Banks & Beals.

Mary Alice (Wardwell) Jingst, 94, of the Hamilton/Warsaw area, passed away on Monday, February 3,
2020, at West Point Care Center in West Point, Iowa.
Mary was born on February 13, 1925, in Hamilton, Illinois, the daughter of John P. and Birdie I.
(Thompson) Wardwell. She married Lawrence Jingst on March 18, 1952, in Sutter, Illinois. He passed
away on October 14, 2012.
Mary is survived by two sons: Ted (Sandra) Jingst and Ross Jingst, both of Warsaw; and three
granddaughters: Martha Walter of Knoxville, Illinois, Amy (David) Gray of Warsaw, Illinois; and Jayla
(Michael) Heindselman of Mount Vernon, Illinois. Other survivors include great-grandchildren, nieces,
nephews and cousins.
Mary is preceded in death by her husband Lawrence, her daughter-in-law Virginia Jingst, two sisters:
Celia Irey and Lucy Nixon, two brothers: Parmer “Pudge” and Fred “Slug” Wardwell and one great-
grandson.
A graveside service will be held at 10 am on Monday, February 10, 2020, at Keokuk National Cemetery in
Keokuk, Iowa.

M. Emogine Howe, 91, of LaHarpe, Illinois passed away at 10:20pm Monday, February 3, 2020 at the LaHarpe-Davier Health Care Center.
She was born December 31, 1928 in LaHarpe, the daughter of Oscar and Effie Jenkins Carter. She married Keith Bowen on December 2, 1946 in LaHarpe. He preceded her in death on July 18, 1992. On June 17, 1994 she married Dale Eppley. He died on July 3, 2013. She married Otis “Jerry” Howe on November 16, 2013. He preceded her in death on November 24, 2018.
Emogine was an avid reader, loved traveling and watching western movies. She enjoyed collecting owl figurines. She was a member of the former Friendship Circle Club.
Surviving are one son, Marshall (Marina) Bowen of Penza, Russia; one daughter, Charlotte (Paul) Pawlak of Carthage, Illinois; two granddaughters, Melissa (Steve) Minya and Natalie (John) Lappe; five great-grandchildren; one brother, Doc Carter of Richland, WI and one sister, Elaine Grundy of Thayer, IL.
Emogine was preceded in death by her husbands, and her parents.
Services will be held at 11:00am Friday, February 7, 2020 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe with Rev. Lee Unger officiating. Burial will follow in the LaHarpe Cemetery. Lisa M. Teel, 55, of Blandinsville, Illinois passed away Saturday, February 1, 2020 at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria, Illinois.
She was born December 31, 1964 in LaHarpe, the daughter of Richard "Pop" and Alice Akers Sheffler. On October 7, 1989 she married Duane Teel in LaHarpe, Illinois. He preceded her in death on September 26, 2019.
Lisa was a 1983 graduate of LaHarpe High School and later graduated from Carl Sandburg College as an LPN. She worked at LaHarpe-Davier Health Care Center and Heartland Health Care Center in Macomb, Illinois. She enjoyed crafts and her pet dogs and cat. She especially enjoyed spending time with her boys and her grandchildren. Family was very important to her.
She is survived by two sons, Christopher (Shanee) Teel of Blandinsville and Steven Teel of Blandinsville; two grandchildren, Marlee and Rylee Teel, two sisters, Sheryl (Bob) Klein of Blandinsville and Darlene (Jeff) Beck of Abingdon, Illinois; two brothers, Jeff (Joanna) Sheffler of Peoria, Illinois and Allen (Cynthia) Sheffler of Blandinsville and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband; parents and one granddaughter, Alexis Teel.
Graveside services will be held at 10:00am Saturday, February 8, 2020 at the Terre Haute, Illinois Cemetery with Pastor Larry Mulch officiating. John W. Barry, 82, of Sutter, passed away at 2:04 A.M. Saturday, February 1, 2020, at Blessing Hospital in Quincy.
John was born November 10, 1937, in Ann Arbor, Michigan, the son of Floyd and Christine (Tingley) Barry. John had been the Accommodations Manager for Fermilab in Batavia, Illinois for many years retiring in 2000. John enjoyed horses, hunting and his cats and dogs. On May 12, 2001, he was united in marriage to Gwendolyn “Gwen” Kobiella in the house they designed and constructed in Sutter. He was a member of the Church of Latter-Day Saints in Quincy.
John is survived by his wife, Gwen, of Sutter; three daughters, Andrea (Jim) Kerber of West Chicago, Illinois, Danielle (Mark Thomas) Wojtiuk of Schaumberg, Illinois and Elaina (Eric Capasso) Shaw of Streamwood, Illinois; and three grandchildren, Krystal and Cassidy McGlennon and Bree Capasso.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Burton.

Claudia “Jeanne” Salyers, simply known to her family and friends as Jeanne, was born on March 28,
1949, in Harrison, Arkansas. Jeanne passed away at her home in Leland, Illinois, on Friday, January 31,
2020. Jeanne had been a cancer survivor for thirty-eight years.
Jeanne was the daughter of Claude and Mildred (Dickey) Spencer, and grew up in the small village of
Elvaston, Illinois. Jeanne attended grade school in Elvaston, then graduated from Hamilton High School
in 1967. Jeanne was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Elvaston, where she taught Sunday
School and VBS. Jeanne married Gary Salyers, her husband of fifty-two years, on June 3, 1967, in
Kahoka, Missouri. On April 25, 1968, their first daughter Jeannie Lynn was born, and on June 12, 1974,
their daughter Kelly Elaine was born. Kelly passed away from cancer on August 10, 2009.
Jeanne lived in several other places but her home was always Hamilton. Jeanne retired from Walmart in
2018 after serving nineteen years. Jeanne enjoyed spending time with her husband, children and
grandchildren, who were the light of her life. She researched family genealogy (as she loved family) and
she liked to travel. Jeanne loved country music and was a fan of Willie Nelson and Elvis Presley. She
recently developed a “FUN” love for flamingos. She had a terrific eye for decorating, loved arts and
crafts and was a talented artist.
Jeanne is survived by her husband Gary Salyers of Leland, Illinois; her daughter Jeannie Lynn (Brad)
Gilpin Keokuk, Iowa; two sisters: Kerrie “Lynnette” (Sean) Beisel of Kansas City, Missouri, and Judith
“Judy” Lawrence of Warsaw, Illinois; her brother Kevin Spencer of Rochelle, Illinois; her Iowa “grand
beauty” (grandchild) Kaylee Gilpin and her Indiana “grand beauties” (grandchildren) Brittin, Brooke and
“Sugar Boy” Sean Hoekema. Other survivors include many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Jeanne is preceded in death by her parents, her daughter Kelly Elaine Hoekema, and her brother Robert
Charles Spencer.
Jeanne’s life will be celebrated with a graveside service at 12:30 pm on Saturday, February 8, 2020, at
Oakwood Cemetery in Hamilton. Visitation will be held from 10 am to noon at Printy Funeral Home in
Hamilton on Saturday directly before the service.

Robert L. “Bob” Bolton, 91, of Hamilton, Illinois, passed away on Thursday, January 30, 2020, at Unity
Point Health in Keokuk, Iowa.
Bob was born on August 12, 1928, in Sonora Township, Illinois, the son of Paul and Nellie (Dighton)
Bolton. On April 6, 1951, he was united in marriage to Alice Jeanne “AJ” Troutvetter. She preceded him
in death on October 7, 2015.
A lifelong resident of rural Hamilton, Bob was also a lifelong farmer and member of Golden’s Point
Christian Church. He served on the Harmony Mutual Insurance board of directors in Carthage for over
forty years. Bob was a hard-working man with a quiet sense of humor. He enjoyed his daily routine, and
always wanted to keep busy by making himself useful. In his later years, Bob spent hundreds of hours
mowing roadside ditches with his tractor. Bob also proudly served his country in the United States Army
during the Korean Conflict.
Bob is survived by two sons: Jim (Debbie) Bolton of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Steve (Debbie)
Bolton of Hamilton; two daughters: Barbie (Rusty) Dowdall and Julie (Ross) Boyer, both of Hamilton;
eleven grandchildren: Jonathan (Jennifer) Bolton of Monument, Colorado, Ben (Melissa) Bolton of
Colorado Springs, Colorado, Emily (Caleb) Spear of Pueblo, Colorado, Anthony (Amy) Bolton of Athens,
Illinois, Lisa Bolton of Hamilton, Hayley (Justin) Hamelton of Burlington, Iowa, Greg (Danielle) Dowdall of
Hamilton, Jeff (Jessica) Dowdall of Elvaston, and James, Paul and Karen Boyer of Hamilton; eleven great-
grandchildren, Lilly Bolton, Alice, Clementine, Ezra and Miriam Bolton, Zion and Anatoli Spear, Jack and
Madelyn Hamelton and Ryan and Emily Dowdall, and one great-grandson due in May. Other survivors
include his sister Carol (Jim) Whitcomb, bother-in-law Melbert Wollbrink, sister-in-law Marge (Dean)
Starr, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Bob is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and his sister Joy Wollbrink.
Funeral services will be held at 10 am on Monday, February 3, 2020, at Printy Funeral Home in Hamilton,
with burial to follow at Oak Grove Cemetery in rural Hamilton. Visitation will be held on from 2 to 4 pm
on Sunday, February 2, 2020, at the funeral home.
Memorials may be directed to Golden’s Point Christian Church, Oak Grove Cemetery, the Alzheimer’s
Association or Every Step Hospice.
