Frances "Mardelle" Reed

Frances “Mardelle” Reed, 97, of Basco, passed away at 11:10 PM Saturday evening, January 29, 2022, at Hickory Grove Assisted Living in Carthage.

 

Mardelle was born July 29, 1924, in Basco, Illinois, the daughter of Harry and Hattie (Gavillet) Launer.  She attended Basco High School for three years and graduated from Hamilton High School in 1942.  On May 27th, 1943 she was united in marriage to Ernest Huls at Immanuel Lutheran Church near Basco.  He preceded her in death in 1978.  She was later united in marriage to Phillip Reed on February 14, 1981.  He preceded her in death in 1996.  Mardelle had worked at Keokuk Area Hospital for twenty-three years as a nurse’s aide and for Sherricks Home Health for three years. Mardelle was a life-long active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church serving in the Dorcus Doers, preparing packages for soldiers overseas and in the church sewing club that made quilts for school children.  She was a forty-year member of her card club and loved to exercise.  She served on the election board for many years and was the treasurer for the Bear Creek Veteran’s Memorial. Mardell loved to take her Model T to all the area parades. Her son, Gary and grandson Davey took great pleasure in driving it in the parades and showing off her prized possession. 

 

Mardelle is survived by her daughter, Bonnie (Jack) Lafeber of Basco; daughter-in-laws, Margaret Huls of Basco and Cheryl Huls of Carthage; step-sons, Robert (Donna) Reed of Laughlin, NV and Gary (Mary) Reed of Quincy; 18 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren, and 19 great-great grandchildren; a sister, Marilyn Cameron of Basco; and many nieces and nephews.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Ernest and Phillip; two sons, Jim Huls and Gary Huls; a stepson, Rolland Reed; a grandson, Jeff Huls; brothers, Leo Launer, Rodney Launer, Don Launer, and Homer Launer; sisters, Leota Antoine, Jean Berg, Wilma Shay, and Mabel Heagy.

 

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday, February 1, 2022, at Immanuel Lutheran Church near Basco with burial to follow in the church cemetery.  Visitation will be held from 9:30 AM to time of service.  Memorials may be directed to the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Hickory Grove Assisted Living or The Blessing Hospice.  Printy Funeral Home of Carthage is in charge of arrangements.

Marilyn J. McMahan

Marilyn J. McMahan, 89, of Hamilton went to be with her Heavenly Father on Friday, January 28, 2022, at 7:12 AM.

Marilyn was born May 4, 1932, in Keokuk, Iowa, the only child of Raymond H. and Mina Kate (Rosenboom) Wollbrink.  

She attended Oak Grove, a one room school, south of Elderville, first through eighth grades.  She graduated from Hamilton High School with the class of 1950.  

The week after graduation she started working at the State Central Savings Bank in Keokuk.  On September 2, 1951, Marilyn was united in marriage with her high school beau, John R. “Hap” McMahan and they were blessed with three children, Susan, Mark and Jon Michael.  

Marilyn went with her husband to Alabama while he was in the Army and worked for the J. I. Case Manufacturing Company in Anniston as a secretary from 1953 – 1955.  She later worked at Security State Bank in Hamilton for forty years retiring in 1995.  

Marilyn was a member of the Bethlehem Evangelical Church of Sutter from birth until her marriage.  In 1951 she became a member of the United Methodist Church where she has been since.  She taught Sunday school when her children were young, and she also served on the church council as treasurer.  Marilyn was a talented seamstress making many dresses for her little daughter.  She also made porcelain dolls and sewed beautiful outfits for them.  She loved her family with all her heart.   Marilyn and Hap’s grandchildren and great grandchildren were their pride and joy.  She very much enjoyed attending their activities and birthday parties.  Marilyn enjoyed sitting on their porch watching the St. Louis Cardinals, and all the birds and wildlife.  She loved to read and always had the Bible, or a book close by.  They wintered in Florida for many years after retirement and loved calls and visits from friends from other states and Canada in later years.

Marilyn is survived by her husband, John “Hap” McMahan of Hamilton; sons, Mark R. (Tracy) McMahan and their children, Jadelyn and Annalise, of Montevideo, Minnesota and Jon Michael (Lisa) McMahan and their children, Connor and Brooke of Omaha, Nebraska; grandchildren, Jennifer (Gregg) Blickhan and their children, Madison and Joey Cooper of Loraine, Illinois; Josh (Leann) Svejda and their children, Jonah and Levi of Keokuk, Jason (Kristen) Svejda and their children, Bennett and Autumn of Burlington, Iowa; brother-in-law, J. R. McMahan of Hamilton; seven nieces and two nephews and many cousins and friends.

Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents; and her daughter, Susan K. Svejda.

 

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday morning, February 2, 2022, at Printy Funeral Home in Hamilton with burial to follow in Oakwood Cemetery in Hamilton.  Visitation will be held from 10:00 AM until time of services at the funeral home.  Memorials may be directed to the United Methodist Church of Hamilton.  Printy Funeral Home of Hamilton is in charge of arrangements.

Steve Fred Griswold

1955 -2022

 

     Steve Fred Griswold, 67, of Keokuk, IA passed away Thursday, January 27, 2022 at his home.

     He was born January 26, 1955 in Ft. Madison, IA the son of Howard F. and Ruth O. Suter Griswold.  Steve lost both of his parents a young age and went to live with Ernie and Pat Suter and their three children, Stacey, Perry and Eric. The family moved to Hamilton, IL in 1963. 

      Steve graduated from Hamilton High School.  During his school years, he played baseball, basketball and football.  The football team was called F-Troop.  

     He had been employed by the local railroad, Keokuk Ferro-Sil, Hoppe Construction and the Keokuk Water Department.

     Steve enjoyed all of his summers at the family cabin at Fortunes Quarry.  He was an avid fisherman who was always had a tale to tell and entertain his friends.  He loved cabin living, swimming and music, especially Willie Nelson. 

    He is survived by two sisters, Judy Ann Griswold (Vigil) of San Diego, CA and Stacey R. Suter (Giampolo) of Hamilton, IA, two brothers, Perry W. Suter of Hamilton, IL and Eric E. Suter of Hamilton, IL and his companion of twenty years, Bonnie Andrews.

     He was preceded in death by both sets of parents.

     A Celebration of life will be held at a later date.

     Memorials may be made to the Keokuk Humane Society.

Patricia "Patty" Arlene Dunstan

Patricia “Patty” Arlene Dunstan

1960-2022

 

     Patricia “Patty” Arlene Dunstan, 61 of Keokuk, IA died Sunday, January 23, 2022 at her home.

     She was born December 29, 1960 in Quincy, IL the daughter of Earl and Sharon Beckett Bryant. 

     On September 11, 1997, Patty was united in marriage to Greg Dunstan in Seligman, MO.  He survives.

     Other survivors include one daughter, Deborah Silver (Gary) of Arkansas, three sons, Larry Bryant (Crystal Patterson) of Keokuk, A.J. Stroup of Arkansas, and Kenneth Stroup (Jennifer) of Arkansas, fifteen grandchildren, two that are currently serving in the military, thirteen great-grandchildren, her mother, Sharon Sadler of Canton, MO, two brothers, Ronnie Rossiter of Texas and Earl Bryant of Arkansas, and one sister, Josie Bryant (Carl Dawson) of Texas. 

     She was preceded in death by her father and one brother, Gregory Paul Bryant.

     Patty had been employed by Riverfront Café in Keokuk.

     She was a faithful member of Calvary Baptist Church in Keokuk.

     Patty enjoyed knitting, crocheting and reading romance novels.  She loved all varieties of flowers, fishing and she especially loved a cup of coffee with a bowl of popcorn while enjoying her Starbucks coffee scented candle. Patty also enjoyed music, dancing and won several dancing contests.  Most of all, she loved spending time with her family and snuggling with Greg.  

     A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Monday, at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, IA with Pastor John Heath officiating.  Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery in Camp Point, IL.  The service will be live-streamed on Patty’s obituary page (tribute wall) at www.vigenmemorialhome.com.

    Carol Frances Daughters, 79, of Donnellson, IA, formerly of Keokuk, died on Saturday, January 22, 2022 at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in Fort Madison, IA.

     She was born on February 17, 1942 in Keokuk, IA, the daughter of Carl and Elaine (Moore) Daughters.

     She had been employed at Park Ridge Workshop in Montrose, IA.

     Carol was a member of the Riverside Baptist Church in Burlington, IA.

     Carol enjoyed working on jigsaw puzzles and looking at books.  She loved jewelry and wore it every day.  She was an avid Elvis fan and loved to listen and sing along to his music.  In her younger years, she was a people person and never knew a stranger.

     She is survived by her brother, Curtis Daughters (Jana) of Burlington, IA, her sister-in-law, Linda Daughters of Keokuk, nieces and nephews, Tara Daughters of Denver, CO, Jessica Lesher of Fort Madison,  Todd Daughters of Ft. Madison and Tim Daughters of Burlington, great nieces and nephews, Trenton Blint, Elic Daughters and Alivia Blint and several cousins.

     She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Delbert Wayne Daughters and Ronald Lee Daughters.

     A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, January 27, 2022 at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, IA.  Burial will be in the Keokuk National Cemetery. The service will be live-streamed on Carol’s obituary page (tribute wall) at www.vigenmemorialhome.com.

Linda F. Massey

Linda F. Massey, 53, of Hamilton, passed away Friday, January 21, 2022 at the Pittsfield Manor in Pittsfield, Illinois.

 

Linda was born July 20, 1968, the daughter of Leroy “Jack” and Marjorie M. “Marge” (Agnew) Massey in Keokuk, Iowa.  She attended Hamilton High School graduating in 1986.  Linda was a long-time member of the Girls Scouts where she had many adventures.  She had worked many years for Methode Electronics in Carthage and also as a CNA the Montebello Manor Care Center in Hamilton.   Linda was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan and loved Winnie the Pooh.

 

Linda is survived by her siblings, Larry (Jean) Massey of Canton, South Dakota, Deborah (Bill) Felgar, of Keokuk, Iowa, Donna Massey of Hamilton and Steven Massey of Hamilton; nephews, Jeffrey Felgar and Thomas (Stefanie) Felgar and Lance (Stephanie Sears) Massey and Ryley Massey; great nieces, Addison and Emerson Felgar; and her best friend, Marla Clark.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents; and her daughter, Brooke, in 1992.

 

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 Noon on Wednesday, January 26, 2022, at Printy Funeral Home in Hamilton with burial to follow in Oakwood Cemetery in Hamilton.  Visitation will be held from 10:00 AM until time of services at Noon at the funeral home.  Memorials may be directed to the family of Linda F. Merle Taylor Houston, Jr.

Merle Taylor Houston, Jr.

1950-2022

 

      Merle Taylor Houston, Jr. 71 of Keokuk, IA passed away Thursday, January 20, 2022 at Blessing Health Keokuk.

     He was born July 5, 1950 in Keokuk, IA the son of Merle Taylor Sr. and Dorryce Galbreath Houston.  

    Merle graduated from Paul Laurence Dunbar High School in Dayton, OH with the Class of 1969.  He furthered his education at the American InterContinental University where he received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees.  He was currently working on his Doctorate degree.    

     Merle was a proud veteran and served in the United States Navy.

     On May 23, 1995 Merle was united in marriage to Novella Robinson in Milwaukee, WI.  She survives.

     Other survivors include his eight children, Louis Antonia Brown (Lakita) of Cincinnati, OH, Merle T. Houston III (Vikki) of Akron, OH, Marie Dorsey of Cincinnati, OH, Jerle T. Houston of Dayton, OH, Jamie Rice of Dayton, OH, Shayla Parker of Milwaukee, WI, Trinity Faulkner (Eddie) of Memphis, TN and Chantel Parker of Milwaukee, WI, twenty-one grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.  He is also survived by one brother, Obie Houston, Sr. (Cynthia) of Trotwood, OH and one sister, Colleen Houston of East Moline, IL.

     He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother in infancy and one sister, Terri Montgomery.

     Merle had been employed by General Plastics in Milwaukee, WI as a truck driver.

     He was a member of God’s Way Christian Center in Keokuk.

     Merle was an avid fisherman and spent as much time as he could fishing.  He was very active in his church and enjoyed working there.  Merle loved football and was an enthusiastic fan of the Green Bay Packers. 

     A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Saturday, January 29, 2022 at New Bethel Church, 1217 Morgan St., Keokuk, IA.

     Pre-past will be held prior to the service, Saturday, at the church from 1 p.m.-3 p.m. with the family meeting with friends at that time.

     Memorials may be made to God’s Way Christian Center.

Stephanie Jo Watson

Stephanie Jo Watson, 70, of Carthage, passed away at Thursday, January 20, 2022, at Memorial Hospital in Carthage at 4:28 PM.

 

Stephanie was born July 7, 1951, the daughter of Tony Ivan and Dolores Arlene (Joachims) Fetter in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.  She graduated from LaSalle High School in Cedar Rapids and went on to attend Mundelein College in Chicago majoring in Music.    On June 21, 1975, she was united in marriage to John Watson at St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Evanston, Illinois.  He preceded her in death in 2016.  Stephanie had served as the activities director for the Hancock County Nursing Home in Carthage for thirty two years and her caring spirit touched many lives while in that role.  She later worked for the Hancock County Treasurer’s Office for several years until her retirement.  Stephanie was an active member of Immaculate Conception Church in Carthage.  Her ministry of music at the church spanned over fifty years and hundreds of funerals, weddings and special events.  She was also a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Women’s Club.  She loved crafting, the Spoon River Drive and had a passion for gardening.  She enjoyed reading and British television, especially murder mysteries.  She loved travelling with her grandchildren.

 

Stephanie is survived by her daughter, Jennifer “Jennie” (Peter) Fasching of Carthage; grandchildren, Trenton and Cora Hanks and Evie Fasching; siblings, Cynthia (Jim) Kendall of Lisbon, Iowa, Tony (Sheila) Fetter of Ottumwa, Mark (Leanne) Fetter Loves Park, Illinois and Kenton (Diana) Fetter of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Sandy Fetter of Fairfax, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John; and a brother, Greg Fetter.


 

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Tuesday, January 25, 2022, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Carthage with burial to follow in Keokuk National Cemetery.  Visitation will be held from 4:00 – 7:00 PM Monday evening at Printy Funeral Home in Carthage.  Memorials may be directed to Sts. William R. Randall

William R. Randall, 74, of Carthage, passed away at 8:38 PM Monday, January 17, 2022, at his home in Carthage.

 

William was born April 6, 1947, the son of Sterling Rex and Mary Lou (Viar) Randall in Quincy, Illinois.  On July 8, 1987, he was united in marriage to Sandra K. Griffith.  She preceded him in death.  

 

William is survived by four sons, Robert (Claudia) Randall and Thomas (Martha) Randall, both of Paducah, Kentucky and Michael (Jill) Reed and Kegan Randall, both of Sedalia, Missouri; a daughter Angela (Richie) Hiland of Carthage; three bonus children from his marriage to Sandra, Robin Mowen, Penny Martin and David Deming; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; siblings, Evelyn (William) Daughterty of Mendon, Gary (Judy) Randall of Quincy and Kathy (Tim) Davenport of Davenport.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Sandra; and a brother, John.

Anthony (Tony) Lee Newton

Anthony (Tony) Lee Newton

Anthony (Tony) Lee Newton, 67, of Powellton, Illinois passed away peacefully on Thursday,
January 20, 2022 at the Silver Maple Memory Care Center, Carthage, Illinois where he had lived since
May of 2020.
He was born February, 4, 1954 in Fort Madison, Iowa, the son of Mahlon Leslie and Wanda Lee
(Thornber) Newton and was the youngest of four children. On June 2, 1984 he married Donna Lynn
Willard at the Bowen Christian Church.
Tony grew up in Powellton, Illinois and he graduated from Nauvoo-Colusa High School in 1972
and from Northeast Missouri State University in 1976 with a bachelor’s degree in health and physical
education.
Tony took pride in being called “Coach” by many students in a variety of sports throughout his
11 years as a physical education teacher. After his coaching tenure, he proudly worked for Country
Financial with Donna for 25 years at their office in Niota, Illinois. He was a faithful member and elder of
the Burnside Christian Church and enjoyed filling in to deliver an encouraging sermon in many local
churches. He was active in the community serving as a board member for various groups including: the
Campus Students for Christ at Western Illinois University, the State Bank of Nauvoo, and Ignite Church
Planting. He was an avid sports fan that would intensely watch any game, especially those that involved
his children.
He will be remembered for being a devout servant to the Lord, possessing a positive outlook on
every aspect of life, and a loving man who could fill any room with laughter and smile.
Tony is survived by his wife, Donna; their two children: Brooke (Matt) Lafrenz of Tipton, Iowa,
and Jake (Sarah) Newton of Mt. Sterling, Illinois; their three grandchildren who called him Papa: Carson
Lee, Miles Matthew and Emersyn Lynn Lafrenz; his three brothers: William Newton of Mt. Pleasant,
Iowa; James Newton of Bandera, Texas; and Edward Newton of Bowen, Illinois.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Monday morning, January 24, 2022, at the Burnside
Christian Church in Burnside, Illinois with burial to follow in the Thornber Cemetery near Powellton.
Visitation will held from 4:00 – 8:00 PM Sunday evening at the Burnside Christian Church. A memorial
fund has been established for the Burnside Christian Church and the Ignite Church Planting.

Linda Ellen Clough

Linda Ellen Clough, age 73, of Hamilton, IL passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 19th, 2022 at Memorial Hospital in Carthage, IL.  

 

She was born in Keokuk, IA on September 11th, 1948 to Edwin and Mary (Carroll) Beard.  She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Paul Clough of Hamilton, son Brian (Holly) Clough of Littleton, CO, daughter Leslie (Marc) Cochran of Hamilton, IL and five grandchildren, Seth Cochran, Ryan Cochran, Molly Cochran of Hamilton, IL and Kylee Clough and Emily Wray of Littleton, CO.  One sister, Carroll (Mike) Gray of Warsaw, IL and one brother, Larry (Jeana) Beard of Hamilton, IL.  Sister-in-laws Rayline (Don) Perry of Kahoka, MO, Sheila (Larry) Eyster of Quincy, IL, Lillian (Les) Hulquist of Ashland, IL and brother-in-law Louie (Aida) Clough of Warsaw, IL.  Also, her best friend since childhood, Carol Ann (George) Huffman of Hamilton, IL and many cousins, nieces and nephews.  

 

She graduated from Hamilton High School Class of 1966 and continued to be involved in reunions.  She was of Catholic faith.  She was a member of the Keokuk Yacht Club and loved the river and boating.  She was employed over the years at Sheller Globe in Keokuk, Elvaston Elevator in Elvaston, Dr. Sowles in Hamilton and The Dress Shop in Hamilton.  She enjoyed playing cards, Yahtzee, cooking and hosting events at her house and was her most happiest when she was surrounded by her family.  She adored, and was adored by her grandchildren and was extremely proud of them.  Family was everything to her. She is preceded in death by her parents Edwin and Mary Beard and one brother-in-law, George Clough and his wife Linda Clough.   


Graveside services will be held at 11:00 AM Monday morning, January 24th, 2022 at Oakwood Cemetery in Hamilton.  Visitation will be held from 1:00 – 7:00 P.M. Sunday at POrinty Funeral Home in Hamilton with family meeting friends from 4:00 – 7:00 P.M.   Memorials can be made to the Cardinal Foundation for Hamilton Schools.  Printy Funeral Home of Hamilton is in charge of arrangements

Angela "Angel" Michelle Grogan

Angela “Angel” Michelle Grogan

1970-2022

 

     Angela ”Angel” Michelle Grogan, 51, of Carthage, IL formerly of Keokuk, IA died Sunday, January 16, 2022 at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria, IL. 

     She was born February 21, 1970 in Keokuk, IA the daughter of James Michael “Mike” and Judith Mann Grogan.  Angela graduated from Cardinal Stritch High School in Keokuk with the Class of 1989.

     She married Troy Gundy on December 17, 1993 and they later divorced.

     She had been employed at Beck Oil in Keokuk.

     She was a member of All Saints Catholic Church in Keokuk.

     Angela had a strong competitive spirit and loved playing basketball.  She enjoyed social media and watching her favorite television show, Grey’s Anatomy.   Angela was happiest when she was surrounded by her family.  Her grandchildren were the sunshine of her life and she loved spending time with them.

     She is survived by one son, Zachary Grogan- Gundy (Jordyn Mullens) of Keokuk, one daughter, Kortney Grogan-Gundy (James Haley) of Keokuk, four grandchildren, Isabella Bollin, Laikynn Haley, Paisley Mullens and Hensley Gundy.  She is also survived by her mother, Judith Grogan of Carthage, IL, three sisters, Tiffany Dietrich (Dwayne) of Keokuk, Joni Greenslaugh (Shaun Moeller) of Keokuk and Traci Billings (Bruce) of Keokuk, several aunts, uncles and cousins and numerous nieces and nephews.

     Angela was preceded in death by her father, Mike Grogan, one brother, Todd Hawley and several aunts and uncles including her aunt, Mary Fink.

     A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, IA with Father Marty Goetz officiating.  The service will be live-streamed on Angela’s obituary page (tribute wall) at www.vigenmemorialhome.com.  Burial will be in the Oakland Cemetery in Keokuk.

Reva G. Brown

Reva G. Brown, 81, of Carthage, passed away at 3:00 AM Sunday, January 2, 2022, at The Elms Care Center in Macomb.  

 

Reva was born on April 22, 1940, the daughter of Gene and Lilly (McClary) Kelly.  She graduated in 1958 from Carthage High School.  On June 26, 1960, she was united in marriage to Robert L. Brown at the First Christian Church in Carthage.  He preceded her in death on September 18, 2019.  Reva had served as a dietary technician at Memorial Hospital in Carthage, a cook at Robert Morris College and had also worked at Methode Electronics in Carthage.  In her spare time, Reva loved to read and play cards, especially solitaire and rummy.  She could start and finish a lengthy book in a day or two, and proudly owned an enormous collection of books, all read by her at least once.  Most of her collection came from yard sales and auctions, which she loved attending with her husband and grandson, Tyler, every chance she had.  Some of her favorite things were iced tea, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, chocolate cake, flowers (both real and artificial), birds, and watching westerns, crime shows, and the Chicago Cubs on TV.  

 

Reva is survived by a daughter, Deborah Livesay of Rogers, Arkansas; daughter-in-law, Peggy Brown, of Plymouth, Illinois; grandchildren, Robert Tyler (Erin) Brown, of Carthage, Kourtnea Brown of Rushville, Illinois; Ben (Carrie) Livesay, Sam (Molly) Livesay, Daniel Livesay, and David (Emily) Livesay, all of Joplin, Missouri; and two great grandchildren, Leonardo Livesay and LJ Livesay; siblings, Jim Kelly of Carthage, Colin Kelly of Keokuk, Iowa; and Linda (Robert) Arnold of Medill, Missouri; also several cousins, nieces, and nephews.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert; her son, Robert “Bob” M.; a brother, David Kelly; a sister, Jeffories Kelly; and sisters-in-law, Dean Kelly and Becky Kelly.

 

Private family services were held at Printy Funeral Home in Carthage followed by burial in Moss Ridge Cemetery in Carthage.

David James Whitcomb

David James Whitcomb, 66, of Burnside, passed away, Sunday, January 16, 2022, at his home.

 

David was born March 16, 1955, the son of James Nelson and Carol Mae (Bolton) Whitcomb in Carthage, Illinois.  He graduated from Nauvoo-Colusa High School in 1973 and went on to attend Spoon River College.  On December 28, 1993, he was united in marriage to Glenda Climer in Colusa.  She survives.  David was a life-long farmer and enjoyed camping, mushroom hunting and classic rock music.  He was an avid University of Illinois basketball fan.  He loved spending time with his grandchildren.  David was a member of the Masonic Lodge.

 

David is survived by his wife, Glenda, of Burnside; daughter, Amanda (Tess O’Brien) Whitcomb of Indianapolis, Indiana; step-children, Jackie (Travis) Conover of Keokuk, Eric (Cindy) Greer of Niota, and Ashley (Aaron Wade) Reidner of Fort Madison; grandchildren, Drew and Piper Conover, Krisama and Kadeeyn Greer, and Eliana Wade; his parents, Jim and Carol Whitcomb of Burnside; siblings, John (Mary) Whitcomb of Ft. Madison, Robert Whitcomb of Mt. Pleasant, Paul Whitcomb of Burnside and Howard (Carole) Whitcomb of Marshalltown.

 

He was preceded in death by a brother, James N. Whitcomb, Jr.

 

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday morning, January 22, 2022, at Printy Funeral Home in Carthage with burial to follow in Moss Ridge Cemetery.  Visitation will be held from 4:00 – 7:00 PM Friday evening at Printy Funeral Home in Carthage.  Memorials may be directed to the Shriner’s Hospital.  Printy Funeral Home of Carthage is in charge of arrangements.

Patricia "Pat" A. Althide

Patricia “Pat” A. Althide, 76, of Hamilton, passed away Thursday, January 13, 2022, at Memorial Hospital in Carthage.

 

Pat was born August 23, 1945, in Keokuk, Iowa, the daughter of Ralph and Virginia (Frank) Nichols. She graduated from Warsaw High School in 1963, and went on to attend Gem City College of Cosmetology. Pat was united in marriage to the love of her life Rodney J. Althide on March 26, 1966. He preceded her in death in 1998.  

 

Pat worked as a cosmetologist her entire life. She owned and operated her own beauty shop out of her home for the majority of that time.  She enjoyed talking with her customers and hearing  about their lives.

 

Pat was blessed with four grandchildren who were the light of her life.  She enjoyed spending time with them and taking them to DQ and Dollar General.  She was always ready to babysit or drive them where ever they needed to be.  Her face lit up when her grandkids were around.  She also enjoyed talking with her friends, Zumba, going on walks, line dancing, golfing and listening to Elvis Presley. Pat was a member of Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church in Warsaw.  

 

Pat is survived by two sons: Bradley (Angela) Althide of La Plata, Missouri, and Brandon (Kimberly) Althide of Basco, Illinois; and four grandchildren: Callie Althide and Cassidy Althide of La Plata, Missouri, and Kaden Althide and Skylar Althide of Basco, Illinois.

 

Pat was preceded in death by her parents, husband and sister Janet Treach.

 

Graveside services will be held at Bethlehem United Church of Christ Cemetery in Sutter, Illinois, on Saturday, March 26, 2022, at 10:00 am. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church of Warsaw.

     Sheryl “Sherry” Lynn Andrews, 71 of Keokuk, IA died Thursday, January 13, 2022 at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, IL.

     She was born June 9, 1950 in Keokuk, IA the daughter of Robert Wayne and Helen Virginia Neuendorf Newman-Bartlett.  Sherry graduated from Tustin High in Tustin, CA with the class of 1968 and from Southeast Iowa Community College in 1983.

     Sherry was first united in marriage to Robert Murrell on August 16, 1969 in Anaheim CA.  To this union two children were born, Candice Murrell and Robert Murrell.  They later divorced.  She married Carl Andrews on March 20, 1992 and they later divorced.

     Sherry had been employed by Southeast Iowa Regional Planning Commission as a bus driver, Southeast Iowa Community Action as a bus driver and River Hills Village as a kitchen hostess, all in Keokuk.

     Sherry loved to travel, especially to Montana.  She enjoyed watching the Green Bay Packers football games, bowling, shooting pool, playing Bingo and fishing.  She was an avid reader and collected Stephen King books.  Sherry had a heart for helping others and volunteered as a delivery driver for Meals on Wheels.  Sherry loved to cook and made wonderful meals for her family and friends to enjoy.

     She is survived by one daughter, Candice Murrell Cannon (Steve) of Keokuk, one son, Robert Murrell (Jenn) of Cumberland Furnace, TN, five grandchildren, Sean Cannon (Carmen) of Keokuk, Brandy Friday (Jesse) of Hesperus, CO, Breanna Boone of Hamilton, IL, Brooke Murrell of Cumberland Furnace, TN and Daxton Murrell of Cumberland, TN and seven great-grandchildren, Allison Friday, Kade Friday, Zoey Friday, Avaya Alferez, Leo Alferez, Neala Cannon and Sean Jameson Cannon.  She is also survived by her best friend, Chris Craig and her beloved cat, “J.J.” Jessie James. 

     She was preceded in death by her parents, step-dad, Raymond Mahoney, brother, Gary Newman, nephew, Randy Newman, niece, Teresa Newman and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

     A Gathering of Remembrance will be held from 4-6 p.m., Sunday, at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, IA with family meeting with friends at that time.

     Memorials may be made to the Heritage Center -Meals on Wheels.

Charles Edwin "Ed" Maggard

     Charles Edwin “Ed” Maggard, 68 of Keokuk IA passed away Wednesday, January 12, 2022 at Blessing Health Keokuk.

     He was born May 29, 1953 Carthage, MO, the son of Ivan and Wanda Chapman Maggard.  On October 4, 1972 he was united in marriage to Wanda Kerns.  She preceded him in death. 

     Ed had been employed by Beachner Seed and Old Fashion Cabinets both in Lamar, MO and Tracker Boat in Clinton, MO.

     Ed loved to fish no matter what the temperature or weather conditions.  He also loved to spend time outdoors hunting squirrels and rabbits.   Ed was an avid St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan and a Kansas City Chiefs football fan.  Every year Ed looked forward to watching the Super Bowl games.

     Ed is survived by two sons, Frank Maggard (Kim) of Plato, MO and Joseph Maggard (Melissa) of Keokuk, two daughters, Martha Loyd of Keokuk and Betty Barker of Brookings, SD, eleven grandchildren and twenty-one great-grandchildren.  He is also survived by three brothers, Donnie Maggard (Brenda) of Lamar, MO, Rick Maggard (Betty) of Boston, MO and Gary Maggard of Carthage, MO, four sisters, Verna Brisco of Carthage, MO, Karen Baker, Brenda Williams and Kathy McNeal all of Kansas City, MO, and thirty-six nieces and nephews.

     Besides his wife, he was also preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Kenneth Maggard and Timothy Maggard.

     A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Robert Allen Root

Robert Allen Root, 58, of Keokuk, passed away at his home on Thursday, January
6, 2022, at 4:42 AM.
Robert was born September 5, 1963, the son of Breece and Alice (Stoneking) Root
in Keokuk. Robert had worked for the carnival, had been a mechanic, over the
road truck driver and had worked for the City of Keokuk. As a child he was a Cub
Scout and Boy Scout. Robert was an avid Saints football fan and enjoyed NASCAR.
He loved to go on an el’ cruseo’ and fishing with his Mama.
Robert is survived by his parents, Breece and Alice Root; siblings, Wanda (James)
Goldsmith, Deborah Root, Helen (Anderson “Jr.”) Fontenot, Jr., Shawn (Cliffton)
Weaver, Bergis (Marriss Tully) Root, Rebecca Root, and Neysa (Rob) Whippy;
many nieces, nephews and cousins; and great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, William and Alma
Stoneking; paternal grandparents, Frank and Ollie Root; and a niece in infancy,
Candice Fontenot.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday, January 11, 2022, at Printy
Funeral Home in Warsaw with burial to follow in Oakland Cemetery in Warsaw.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 – 7:00 P.M. Monday evening at Printy Funeral
Home in Warsaw. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the funeral

Wanda Julia Wear

Wanda Julia Wear, daughter of Audrey (Kugler) and Ralph Williams was born March 7, 1933, in Smith County, Kansas. She departed this life January 4, 2022, at Hickory Grove assisted living in Carthage, Illinois at the age of 88.

Wanda was the sixth of eight children born into a family who enjoyed a great love for laughter and music. Her mother died when she was only 5 years old and her father died when she was fifteen.

Despite their struggles and losses, the siblings were determined to keep the family together and maintain love and laughter in their lives.

Wanda met Edward Wear while he was in the Air Force, and they married February 2, 1951. Wanda and Ed moved back to Carthage, Illinois and spent their life farming and raising four children. Wanda loved feeding people including hay crews, feed salesmen and anyone else who pulled in the driveway. Wanda with her great personality worked at various jobs including her two favorites, waitressing and sitting with people when they needed a caretaker. Wanda will be remembered for her generosity, her loving personality, and the love of her family. She was always willing to babysit for her precious grandchildren.

Left to treasure her memory are her children, son Jack (Jill) Kukla of Gerald, Missouri; a daughter, Shirli (Alan) Dickerson of Carthage; a son Ross (Phoebe) Wear of Carthage; a daughter Sherry (Tom) Wright of Carthage; grandchildren, Luke Harris, Audrey Hall, Adrienne Range, Carrie Wear, Lexanne Darwent, Abbie O’Hern, Whitney McKeown, Caitlin Dallas, and Steven Kukla; fifteen great grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.

Wanda was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Edward Wear; sisters Norma June Peterson, Roma Timmons, JoAnne Nicholson, Sylvia Anderson; brothers Donn Williams, Gayle Williams and Arden Williams; Grandchildren Natasha Kukla, and John Ross Kukla.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM Saturday, January 8, 2022, at First Presbyterian Church in Carthage with burial to follow in Moss Ridge Cemetery in Carthage.  Visitation will be held from 4:00 – 8:00 PM with family meeting with friends from 6 -8 PM Friday evening, January 7, 2022, at Printy Funeral Home in Carthage.  Memorials may be directed to Hickory Grove Sunroom or donor’s choice.  Printy Funeral Home of Carthage is in charge of arrangements.

     Kayden Andrew Nott, infant son of Bryant Nott and Hannah Dooley passed away on Tuesday, January 4, 2022 at the OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria, IL.

     Kayden was born at 5:29 a.m., Thursday, December 16, 2021 at Memorial Hospital in Carthage, IL.  Besides his parents, Kayden was also welcomed into this world by his two brothers, Malakye Nott of Hamilton, IL and Maddyen Nott of Keokuk, IA, maternal grandparents, Rick and Brandy Dooley of Hamilton, IL, paternal grandparents, Michael Nott of Galesburg, IL and Heather Beckner of Dallas City, IL, maternal great-grandparents, Craig and Bonnie Brisby of Montrose, IA and Jerry and Kathy Woodworth of Warsaw, IL, paternal great-grandparents, Rebecca Nott of Galesburg, IL and Ronald and Kathy Beckner of Bushnell, IL and great-great-maternal grandpa, Jack Brisby.  He is also survived by five aunts and uncles, Tyler and Kylee Dooley, Chase Dooley, Jackson Dooley, Madison Dooley all of  Hamilton, IL and Brandon and Megan Nott of Cedar Rapids,  IA and one cousin, Kaislee Dooley.

     He was preceded in death by his great-great maternal grandmother, Shirley Brisby, great-great-maternal grandparents, Melvin and Ann Kisor and great-great paternal grandmother, Virginia Link.

     From the moment Kayden was expected, he captured the hearts of his family. He was a beautiful baby boy who touched the lives of so many in such of brief time.  He will lovingly be remembered forever in the hearts of his family.

     A visitation will be held from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m., Sunday, at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, IA with family meeting with friends at that time.  A private family service will be held at a later date.

Robert "Bob" E. Benton

Robert “Bob” E. Benton

1945-2021

 

     Robert (Bob) E. Benton, 76 of Lewistown, MO, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on Sunday, January 2, 2022.  He was born September 13, 1945 in Bartow, FL, to Edith and Boragard Benton.

     Bob was a compassionate and loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. He served his country as a veteran of the U.S. Navy.

      Bob loved traveling and finding adventure with his family, and making his children and grandchildren laugh. He also loved NASCAR, model railroading and hiking and canoeing, all the while capturing the beauty of our country with his photography wherever he went. Most of all, he loved.

     He is survived by his wife, Jamie Bowles of Lewistown, MO, and his previous wife, Rose Mary Pasciuta. Bob is also survived by two daughters, Rochelle Mester (A.J.) of Brandon, FL, and Robyn Henke (Andrew Widell) of Odessa, FL, stepchildren, Cecilee Radel (Adam) of Keokuk, IA, and Otis Houston (Emily Miller) of Portland, OR, granddaughters, Riley Campbell and Everly Mester, and Eva and Erica Radel, sister-in-law, Marcia Howren (Max) of Mobile, AL, cousin, James Bradford (Charlotte) of Smyrna, TN, nieces and nephews.  He is also survived by his loyal beagle, Blue.

     There will be no memorial service at this time, but a gathering of remembrance will be announced for spring 2022. He will be laid to rest at the Durham Cemetery in Durham, MO.

     Memorial donations may be sent to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

Gilbert Eugene "Gib" Duffy

Gilbert Eugene “Gib” Duffy, 67, of Carthage, passed away at 12:00 PM, Friday,
December 31, 2021, at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Illinois.
Gib was born August 30, 1954, the son of Gilbert Benjamin and Violet (Shepler)
Duffy, in La Harpe, Illinois. He attended Carthage High School. On September 21,
1974, he was united in marriage to Barbara Ann Johnson at Trinity Lutheran
Church in Carthage. He had worked for the Illinois Department of Transportation
Highway Maintenance Department for 31 years retiring in 2019. He loved
hunting, camping and traveling with Barbara on their Harley Davidson, going
yearly to the Sturgis festival. Gib was an avid collector of guns, coins and toy
tractors and loved auctions of any kind. He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran
Church in Carthage and loved spending time with his grandchildren.
Gib is survived by his wife, Barbara Ann Duffy, of Carthage; two sons, Travis
(Jennifer) Duffy of Basco and Brigham (Ruby) Duffy of Carthage; four
grandchildren, Tegan, Ryder, Maverick and Burnadette; siblings, Gilbert Duffy, Jr.
of Ferris, Barbara Lynn Duffy of Ferris, Robert (Gail) Duffy of Colchester, Roger
Duffy of Macomb, Richard (Stacie) Duffy of Carthage and Lisa Duffy of Colchester.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday, January 6, 2022, at Trinity
Lutheran Church in Carthage with burial to follow in Moss Ridge Cemetery in
Carthage. Visitation will be held from 4:00 – 7:00 P.M. Wednesday evening at

James John Reittinger

James John Reittinger

1967-2021

 

     James John Reittinger, 54, of Montrose, IA died Friday, December 31, 2021 at Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington, IA.

     He was born on April 28, 1967 in Dubuque, IA the son of Merlin and Janet Guzzle Reittinger.  James graduated from Nauvoo Colusa High School with the class of 1985 and Robert Morris College in 1987.

     On May 27, 1989 James was united in marriage to Cheryl Lynn Wrieden in Nauvoo, IL at the Church of Jesus Christ.  She survives.

      Other survivors include three daughters, Jordyn Nye (Michael) of Argyle, IA, Jennifer Reittinger of Montrose, IA and Sarah Reittinger of Des Moines, IA, five grandchildren, Madison, McKenna, Michael, Phillip and Piper.  He is also survived by three brothers, Randy Reittinger (Cindy) of Nauvoo, IL, Rick Reittinger (Janie) of Texas and Scott Reittinger (Michelle) of Utah, one sister, Heidi Mathews (Eric) of Peoria, IL, his mother and father-in-law, Dick and Linda Wrieden of Keokuk and many nieces and nephews.

     He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Candice Franklin, one niece, Danielle Wrieden and one nephew, Liam Reittinger.

     James had been employed by Ferguson as a salesperson. 

     He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Nauvoo, IL.

     James loved sports and was an enthusiastic San Francisco 49ers and Milwaukee Bucks fan.  He enjoyed boxing, muscle cars, drawing, collecting knives and guns and reading Stephen King books.  He also enjoyed watching his favorite television shows, Yellowstone, Dexter and Supernatural.  James liked all types of rock music and playing the guitar.  Most of all, James loved spending time with his grandchildren, who were the light of his life.

     A visitation will be held from 2:00-4:00 p.m., Saturday, at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, IA with family meeting with friends at that time.

Marilyn "Mamie" Ross

Marilyn “Mamie” Ross, of Carthage, Illinois, passed away at Memorial Hospital in Carthage at 8:13 AM Thursday, December 30, 2021.

 

Marilyn was born June 10, 1934, the daughter of Ronald and Nellie (Bemis) Heller in Drakesville, Iowa. On April 26, 1975, she was united in marriage to Nile L. Ross in Burlington, Iowa. He preceded her in death April 11, 1985. Janet worked at the Chaddock Boys Home in Quincy, Illinois for 5 years. She then continued her career in Child Care, working at Cunningham Children’s Home in Champaign, Illinois.   Janet was a member of the Grace Bible Church in Dallas City, Illinois. 

 

Marilyn is survived by an adopted granddaughter, Shannon Klossing; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents; Husband; one brother, Donald R. Heller; and a special cousin, Sue Hunnicutt.

 

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Monday, January 3, 2022, at Printy Funeral Home in Carthage.  Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington, Iowa.  Visitation will be held from 9:00 AM until time of services at 11:00 at the funeral home.  Memorials may be directed to Hickory Grove Assisted Living in Carthage or Hancock County Fights Cancer.  Printy Funeral Home of Carthage is in charge of arrangements.
