Craig Kingman Bullis

1944-2024

     Craig Bullis, 79, of Keokuk, IA passed away Monday, February 26, 2024.

     He was born on July 7, 1944 in Keokuk, IA the son of Kenneth and Marjorie Kingman Bullis. 

      Craig was a veteran of the United States Army and proudly served his country during the Vietnam War.  During his service time he served in the 5^th Army Band in Fort Sheridan, IL and the 8^th Army Headquarters Band in Seoul, Korea. 

     He was a member of the First Christian Church of Disciples of Christ in Keokuk and was the church choir director for over forty-years.   He was also a member and past president of the Keokuk Kiwanis Club and a member and past president of the IA Retired Public Employees. 

     Craig began his teaching career in Dumont, IA, continuing on from 1974-84 as the Keokuk High School band director. Craig left teaching to run a print shop for several years. Later, he also taught band in the Keokuk Catholic schools, Warsaw, IL schools, and taught from 2001-2010 in the Keokuk elementary schools and middle school, retiring in 2010. Craig taught private lessons for many students on clarinet and saxophone throughout all of those years and performed throughout the area. He was co-founder of the Bullis-Rutter Big Band, a former member of the SE Iowa Wind Ensemble, Keokuk's McNamara's Band for nearly 60 years.  Some of his memorable moments were to play for every president from Eisenhower through Obama and touring England and Scotland with the Coe College Band and playing in the Carl Anderson Dixieland Band.

     He will be missed by so many of us as well as his wife of over fifty years, Chong Cha, "Lee" Bullis and their daughter, Winona Bullis and her husband Daniel O’Koniewski.

     Craig left a lasting impact on our community, countless musicians and his loss is felt deeply.

     A memorial service will be held at 3:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 5, 2024 at First Christian Church in Keokuk with Pastor David Turner officiating.  Following the service a Celebration of Life will be held at The Hawkeye Restaurant in Keokuk from 5- 8 p.m.

     Visitation will be held prior to the service from 2-3:30 on Tuesday, at the church with family meeting with friends at that time.

Noah Edward “Thinking Bear” Gould

1999-2024

     Noah Edward “Thinking Bear” Gould, 24 of Keokuk, IA went home to be with Jesus on Sunday, February 25, 2024 at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City, IA.

     He was born August 8, 1999 in Keokuk, IA the son of Clifford and Heather Young Gould.  Noah graduated from Keokuk High School with the class of 2018 and had consistently been on the honor roll for seven years. 

     Noah had been employed by several local businesses including First Community Bank, Hoerner YMCA and the Keokuk Public Library.

     He was a faithful member of New Beginnings Church in Keokuk.

     Noah enjoyed watching movies and television, especially Sponge Bob and Animal Planet, reading comic books and collecting Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.  He was proud of his Native American Heritage and was a direct descendant of Chief Keokuk. He loved all animals and he was the light of the world.  Noah had an endless love of Jesus.  He had a strong faith that was an active and vital part of his life.  He prayed for his brother Dakota into existence.  Noah really enjoyed comedians and had a special relationship with his friend, Bruce Baum, who is a national known comedian.

     He is survived by his mother, Heather Martinez, dad, Claude Martinez, biological father, Clifford Gould, two brothers, Austin Brockett and Dakota Martinez, his grandfather, Alvin “Soaring Eagle” Young, one uncle, Josh “Eagle Claw” Young and many great aunts, great uncles and cousins.  He is also survived by special friends, Mark Slater and Penny Johnson, many “adoptive” family members and his personal Elvis, Junior Talley.

     He was preceded in death by his grandmothers, Marilyn Young and Barbara Martinez, great-grandparents and a sister in infancy, Masia Marie Martinez.

     A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, at New Beginnings Church in Keokuk with Pastor Donnie Skinner officiating.

     In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Keokuk Animal Services, 249 Carbide Lane, Keokuk, IA.

Jeanette Louise Varner

1957-2024

     Jeanette Louise Varner, 67 of Argyle, IA passed away Sunday, February 25, 2024 at Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington, IA.

     She was born February 9, 1957 in Keokuk, IA the daughter of Carl and Nancy Mary Catherine McDermott Washburn.  She graduated from Keokuk High School with the class of 1975 and from Southeastern Community College, where she received her Associates Degree.

     Jeanette had been employed by Community Action for twenty-eight years as a family development specialist.  Most recently, she worked at Hy-Vee.

     Jeanette enjoyed doing needlework, including crocheting and quilting.  She loved farm life, all types of animals and watching her favorite television shows, Father Brown, Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman and The Red and Green Show.  Jeanette’s grandchildren were the sunshine of her life and she spent every chance she could with them.

     She is survived by two daughters, Catherine Varner (Cody Farr) of Keokuk and Julia Varner (Lane Metcalf) of Blandinsville, IL, three sons, Richard Varner (Sharon) of Keokuk, Joseph Varner of Keokuk and John Varner (Carrie Wilson) of Keokuk and eleven grandchildren.  She is also survived by three brothers, Martin Eugene Washburn (Maria) of Virginia, Tom Washburn of Keokuk and William Washburn (Nancy) of Reed City, MI and three sisters, Catherine Washburn, Rose Washburn and Julia Sell (Ronald) all of Keokuk and several nieces, nephews and cousins. 

     She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Carl Washburn and John Washburn and one sister-in-law, Tommi Washburn.

     A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, IA with Pastor Donnie Skinner officiating.  Burial will be in the Oakland Cemetery in Keokuk.

     Visitation will be held from 2-4 p.m., Sunday, at the funeral home with family meeting with friends at that time.

Mary Alice “Holly” Vorhies

1933-2024

    Mary Alice “Holly” Vorhies, 90, of Keokuk, IA died Friday February 23, 2024 in Cedar Rapids, IA. 

    A lifelong resident of Keokuk, she was the wife of William Vorhies. He preceded her in death in 2020.

    Born May 8, 1933 in Keokuk, she was the daughter of James A. and Katherine (Blom) Hollingsworth. She was married Oct 20, 1956 in Keokuk.

    Holly is survived by son, Douglas (Jane) Vorhies of Oxford MS, son, James Vorhies of San Diego, CA, and daughter, Katherine Vorhies of Marion, IA.

    Holly graduated in 1951 from Keokuk High School and attended the University of Iowa where she studied nursing before becoming a homemaker. She was an active member of St. John’s Episcopal Church and loved singing in the choir. She was a member of Mother’s Study Club, PTA, the Keokuk Country Club and Keokuk Yacht Club. Holly loved to play tennis and golf, and spend time boating on the Mississippi.

     Burial will be held at a future date at the National Cemetery in Keokuk. Memorials may be directed to the Keokuk-Hamilton Dam Museum or the Keokuk Humane Society.

Mary Elizabeth Real

1933-2024

     Mary Elizabeth Real, 90 of Keokuk, IA died Sunday, February 25, 2024 at her home.

     She was born November 1, 1933 in Keokuk, IA the daughter of Edward Chester and Helen Marie Alpha Omega Cady Harrison.  On December 23, 1948 she was united in marriage to William Delbert Real in Keokuk.  He preceded her in death on July 20, 2020. 

     Mary loved her family and was famous for her pies, home-made ice cream, and sweet pickles. She loved bowling, bingo, slot machines and jig saw puzzles. She was an avid gardener and always enjoyed canning for her family. To her children she was a wonderful mother and friend.

     She is survived by nine children, Wanda (Allan) Elliott of Biloxi, MS, William “Bill” (Kathy) Real of Brownsville, TX, L. Sue Kay of Keokuk, Mary (Kevin) Hageman of Eureka, MO, Ruth (Steve) Block of Keokuk, Laura (Bill) Coppage of Fort Madison, IA, Rita (Joel) Harris of Hudsonville, Michigan Nancy (Bill) Murrell of Rover, Arkansas and Lisa (Tim) Stevens of Windsor Heights, IA, twenty-two grandchildren and thirty-five great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.  She is also survived by special friends, Jimmy (Nici) Johnson of Argyle, IA.

     She was preceded in death by her parents, her siblings, three grandchildren, Michelle Lee Hageman, Jenny Marie Hageman Tillman and Leslie Leann Real Jones and one great-grandchild, Alleyna Joy Kersey. 

     Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk with Pastor Larry Wallingford officiating.  Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park in Keokuk.

     Visitation will be held Tuesday with the family meeting with friends from 5 – 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Danny Pix

1954 -2024

     Danny William Pix, 70, of Keokuk, IA, passed away Monday, February 19, 2024 at Henry County Hospital in Mt. Pleasant, IA.

     He was born February 13, 1954 in Santa Monica, CA the son of Clarence William and Helen Faye Wilcox Pix.  Danny graduated from LaPuence High School in California.  

     He was married to Miriam Martinez.   

     He had been employed by several factories including Kenyo in California and Marshal Industries and also worked at Randy’s Donuts as well as being a Crossing Guard at Garvey School District in California. 

     Danny was a member of God’s Way Christian Center in Keokuk. 

     Danny enjoyed all kinds of music and played in a band and also played many instruments including saxophone, violin, drums, guitar, flute, tuba, congos, cowbells and harmonica.  He was also a talented songwriter.  He was a great enthusiast of the outdoors and enjoyed bicycling, mountain hikes, going to the aquarium at Sea World and visiting mountains and beaches.  He also made rainmakers and t-shirts, jewelry and did abstract paintings as a hobby.     

     Survivors include one daughter, Sarah Pix of Keokuk and two sons, Adam Pix and Daniel Pix of California and a grandson, Daniel Jr.  Also surviving are two sisters, Darlene Acosta (Raymond) of California and Caroline Fleury (Howard) of Minnesota and his mother, Helen Pix of California. 

     Preceding Danny in death are his father Clarence, a son Joshua Pix and a sister Charlene Annette Pix.  

     A funeral service will be held 12 p.m., Saturday, March 2, 2024 at Vigen Memorial Home.

     Visitation will be held prior to the service from 11-12:00 and 1-4:30 p.m.

Ann Sue Decker Peel

1938 -2024

     Ann Sue Decker Peel, 86, of La Crosse, WI, formerly of Keokuk, IA passed away Wednesday, February 14, 2024.

     She was born January 13, 1938 in Fort Madison, IA the daughter of Gilbert Theodore Decker and Alma Lillie Miller Decker.

     She graduated from Fort Madison High School with the class of 1956. As part of her high school experience, she was a member of the Kilties (a school spirit team). 

     As a teenager, Ann was an avid baseball fan. She even occasionally rode the train from Fort Madison to Chicago or Milwaukee to watch professional baseball games.

     After graduating high school, Ann attended Gem City Business College in Quincy, IL and worked in the business field before becoming a wife and mother.

     On July 2, 1961 Ann was united in marriage to Raymond Samuel Peel at the First Christian Church in Fort Madison, IA.  They had two daughter, Donna Howard (James) of St. Francisville, MO and Linda Richardson (Michael) of La Crosse, WI.

     Ann was an unassuming person who put others’ needs before her own, always making sure her family had what they needed and made it look effortless.  She baked countless chocolate angel food cakes from scratch over the years. We smile remembering her mother using the egg yolks to make noodles from scratch and giving the egg whites to Ann for angel food cakes.

     Ann enjoyed listening to gospel quartet music and working search-a-word puzzles.  When time allowed, she followed several college professional sports, having favorite baseball, basketball, football and NASCAR teams.  Figure skating was also a favorite sport to watch.

     Ann is survived by her sister, Linda Morgan (Jeff), brother, Richard Decker (Beverly), two daughters, Donna and Linda, three grandsons, Vincent, TJ (Brittany) and Brice Vaughn, and five great-grandchildren, Josiah “JJ”, Jacob, Jenelle, Carson and Makenna Vaughn, and several nieces and nephews. 

     She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Ray and older brother, Ronald Decker. 

     Ann was cremated and will be quietly laid to rest next to Ray at the Keokuk National Cemetery in Keokuk, IA.

     Visitation will be Friday, March 1, 2024 from 2-5 p.m., at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, IA.  Per her request, there will not be a funeral service or graveside service. 

     The family is grateful to the La Crosse County Sheriff’s Department, West Salem Police Department, West Salem First Responders, Tri-State Ambulance and the Gundersen Health System for their compassion and support during Ann’s last days. 

     Memorials may be made to Bethel Bible Church or to Lee County EMS.

Doris Jeannine Steinhour, 91, of rural Carthage, passed away at her home at 5:16 AM
Sunday, February 25, 2024.
Jeannine was born February 29, 1932, in Keokuk, Iowa at St. Joseph’s Hospital the
daughter of Lloyd Thomas, Sr. and Myrtle L. (Kachle) Mapes. She attended “Christy”, a rural
elementary grade school and graduated from Hamilton High School with the class of 1949. On
March 12, 1950, she was united in marriage to Lloyd L. Steinhour at Ferris Christian Church in
Ferris, Illinois.
Jeannine is survived by three sons, Jerry Lee (Elaine Holbrook) Steinhour of Osage
Beach, Missouri, Steven Lloyd (Audra) Steinhour of Carthage, and Darrel Lynn (Kay De)
Steinhour of Venice, Florida; eight grandchildren, April (Mark) Royan, Amy (Jerry) Barron,
Preston (Amy Huss) Steinhour, Chancesity (Todd) Kirchner, Matthew (Elizabeth) Steinhour,
Caitlin (James) Wesolek, Douglas (Megan) McCoy and Cassie Whitford; 11 great-grandchildren,
Zoie Dawn, Austin Lane, and Caden Lee Steinhour, Andrew Peyton and Max Harrison Royan,
James Paul (J.P.), Charlotte Ruth and Arthur Julien Wesolek, Waylon Rowdy McCoy, and Amirah
Monroe and Nevaeh MiAmoura Barron; one great great grandson due in March; a brother,
Danny (Bette) Mapes of LaHarpe; two brothers-in-law, John Radel of Nauvoo and Bob Swartz of
Quincy; Donna Steinhour of Burlington; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Jeannine was a farmwife and homemaker and worked alongside her husband. She
helped prepare the field for planting and trucked the grain at harvest time. She enjoyed
sewing, gardening, canning, music and working in her flowers. She especially enjoyed each of
her grandchildren. She served on the Harmony Township Election Board. She was a 20-year
Home Extension member, volunteered and delivered senior citizen’s meals for 30 years and
was a member of the Basco Walkers. Jeannine also baked anniversary and wedding cakes. She
was the organist for 10 years at the Fountain Green Presbyterian Church and more recently
played piano at the Mt Pleasant Christian Church. She was baptized at Ferris Christian Church
at age 14.
After Lloyd, her husband of 62 years, retired from farming they enjoyed camping and
traveling to many states to visit family and friends. She later wintered several years in Florida.
Jeannine was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lloyd; brother, Lloyd T.
Mapes, Jr; sister-in-law, Euvon Mapes Radel; sister, Gloria Mapes Roskamp Strate; brothers-in-
law, Herbert Roskamp and LeRoy Strate; and daughter-in-law, Sue Peddicord Steinhour.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, March 2, 2024, at Printy Funeral Home in
Carthage. Visitation will be from noon until time of service at 2:00 at the funeral home.
Interment will be held in Oakwood Cemetery in Hamilton at a later date. Memorials may be
made to Harmony Town Hall for the upkeep of the building or Hearts of Hancock Humane
Society in Carthage. Printy Funeral Home of Carthage is in charge of arrangements.

Shirley Ruth Higbee

1935-2024

     Shirley Ruth Higbee, 88 of Keokuk, IA passed away Thursday, February 22, 2024 at the Birkwood Village in Ft. Madison, IA.

     She was born July 21, 1935 in Ravenscroft, TN the daughter of Roy and Louvenna Page Nash.

     On October 10, 1953 Shirley was united in marriage to Ursel Eugene “Gene” Higbee.  He preceded her in death on September 11, 2009.

     Shirley was a member of New Testament Christian Church in Keokuk.

     She enjoyed crocheting, planting flowers and watching hummingbirds and wildlife.  She was a devoted mother and homemaker who greatly enjoyed caring for her family. Her greatest joy in life was her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  

     She is survived by four daughters, Debbie Martin (Chuck) of Montrose, IA, Linda Messenger of Palmyra, MO, Brenda Hoffstatter (Bob) of Branson, MO and Wanda Schindley of Mt. Pleasant, TX, two sons, Kim Higbee of Mt. Pleasant, TX and Kirk Higbee of Kenmore, WA, thirteen grandchildren, thirty-two great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.  She is also survived by one sister, Sonnia Rowlett of Ft. Madison, IA.

     Besides her husband, she was also preceded in death by her parents, one son, Steve Higbee, one grandchild and one sister, Sandra LaBonte.

     A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m., Monday, at the Keokuk National Cemetery with Pastor Dawn Butler officiating. 

     In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Compasses Hospice.

Leroy Agnew, 82, of Hamilton, passed away at 2:43 PM, Wednesday,
February 21, 2024, at Blessing Hospital in Quincy.
Leroy was born November 5, 1941, at home in Hamilton, the son of August
Harold “Buck” and Louise Maria (Cook) Agnew. He was united in marriage
to Sherry Wieprecht on Valentines Day 1975. She preceded him in death
in 2023. Leroy had worked as a janitor for the Montebello Care Center for
thirty years retiring in 2007. He then went to work for cleaning the Hamilton
Community Center and City Hall for many years up to the present. He
could often be seen riding his bike, which he enjoyed, as well as gardening
and taking care of his lawn. He was a member of the Assembly of God
Church in Hamilton.
Leroy is survived by a son, Jason Agnew of Keokuk; daughter, Jamie
Agnew of Hamilton; three grandchildren, Carter Sprague, Jarin Agnew and
Emmit Agnew; siblings, Rosalie (Raymond) Bruns of Labelle, Missouri,
Jack Agnew of Hamilton, Jean (Jim) Richardson of Hamilton, Betty (John)
Hymes of Hamilton, Ray Agnew of Carthage and Robert McVeigh of
Carthage; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Sherry; and siblings, Patty
Parish, Philip Agnew, Karen Sue Agnew and Kenneth Agnew.
A memorial service will be held at 5:00 PM Tuesday, February 27, 2024, at
the Hamilton Community Center. The family will meet friends following the
service util 8:00 PM at the Community Center. In lieu of flowers, memorials
may be directed to the family of Leroy Agnew. Printy Funeral Home of
Hamilton is in charge of arrangements.

Joyce Elaine Davis Dye
1934-2024

Joyce Elaine Davis Dye, 89 of Keokuk passed away February 23, 2024 at her home.
She was born August 8, 1934 the daughter of M.V. “Jeff” and Ruth Elizabeth Hays Davis. Her
early education began in Sandusky, where she attended a one-room schoolhouse before graduating
from Keokuk High School.
On July 11, 1952, she was united in marriage to Keith E. Dye sharing decades of love and
companionship.
Joyce worked at Northwestern Bell Telephone as a switchboard operator and then in the local office
She also devoted her skills and compassion to nursing at Dr. John Lee’s office.
She was a faithful member of Wayland Baptist Church. She generously shared her musical talents
by playing the organ and imparted wisdom as a Sunday School teacher.
In her leisure time, Joyce pursued adventurous hobbies, including motorcycle riding across the
country and making a memorable trip to Sturgis following her retirement. She found solace in the
pages of books, and her nimble fingers crafted beautiful stitches through her love of sewing and
embroidery. Joyce's curiosity knew no bounds, and she embraced the opportunity to explore a variety
of interests.
She is survived by her husband Keith Dye of Keokuk, two daughters, Jayne Woods of Hamilton,
and Cheryl (Wayne) Morehouse of Keokuk, four grandchildren, Andrew (Sarah) Morehouse, Denise
(Jason) Hendricksmeyer, Mike (Ashley) Davidson, and Michelle (Albert) Keppel, seven great
grandchildren, Alex Hendricksmeyer, Jacob Hendricksmeyer, Tanner Keppel, Kole Keppel, Draven
Davidson, Levi Davidson, and Veda Blue Davidson and a great-great grandson Calvin Morehouse.
She is also survived by a brother, Gary (Mary) Davis of Hamilton, two nieces, Shelly Burdo and Diana
Cosby, two sisters-in-law, Linda (John) Hayes and Miriam Dye Snider.
She was preceded in death by her parents, son-in-law, Norm Woods, step-grandson, Nathan Keppel,
and brothers-in-law, Ernest (Shirley) Dye and Glenn Snider.
A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Monday at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk with Pastor
Daniel Fox officiating. Burial will be in the Sandusky Cemetery.
Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service with the family meeting with friends at that
time.

Shirley Jean Nye, 87, of Keokuk, passed away at 8:10 AM, Wednesday, February
21, 2024, at her daughter's home in Belleville, Illinois.
 
Shirley was born March 27, 1936, the daughter of James and Bessie (Canada)
Stephenson in Keokuk.  She was united in marriage to Arvest “Rocky” Nye
February 23, 1961, in Kahoka, Missouri.  He preceded her in death November 12,
1997.  After attaining her associate degree, she worked as a supervisor at BTR in
Keokuk for twenty-six years.  Shirley’s favorite hobby was quilting.
 
Shirley is survived by her children, Cheryl Higbee of Keokuk, Tina (Wayne)
Warning of Fowler, Illinois, Tony (Denni) Nye of Parsons, Kansas, Susan “Sam”
(John) Lawson of Belleville, Illinois, Abby (Lennie) Etter of Keokuk and Doris
“Vanessa” (Donnie) Leimer of Rancho Palos Verde, California; forty-four
grandchildren; and a multitude of great grandchildren and great-great
grandchildren.
 
She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Bessie; husband, Arvest; a
son, Steve Nye; a daughter, Audrey Shaffer; and siblings, Charles, Jimmie and
Margie.
 
Graveside service will be held at the Keokuk National Cemetery Friday March 1,
2024, at 1:00.  An informal gathering of family and friends will be held at Lake
Cooper Foundation Hall 810 Main Street Keokuk immediately following the
services.

Marla Ann Herzog 70, passed away Sunday, February 18, 2024 at the Macomb Post Acute Care Center in
Macomb, IL.
She was born April 8, 1953 in Iowa City, IA, the daughter of Dr. Donald Roswell and Elaine Lydia
Lawson Herzog.
She is survived by her son Justin T. Prevo of Carthage, IL., one brother Dr. Daryl R. Herzog of
Atascadero, CA., cousins Alan (Annette) Baldwin of Darlington, WI., Ruth Lawson of Fort Madison, IA.,
Ron (Sue) Lawson, Ron (Selena) Lawson II, Alyssa Lawson and Alexander Lawson, all from Keokuk,
IA., and her beloved cats, Saffron, Darwin, Alien and
Thistle.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Darwin R. Herzog of Carson, CA., her sister-in-law
Priscilla M. Herzog of Atascadero, CA., aunts and uncles Rachel and Paul Baldwin of Warsaw, IL., Lloyd
and Eudora Lawson of Keokuk, IA., and John Walter Lawson of St. Petersburg, FL.
Marla’s father was in the military and with various jobs moved his family around the country living in
Ohio, Texas and finally settling in California. Marla graduated from Carson High School in 1971.
Marla married Joseph Prevo in 1975 and had one child, Justin Prevo. They were later divorced. She
married Jeff Robbins in 1989, but they later divorced.
Marla started her career working various office jobs and banking, finally retiring in 2003 as an Office
Specialist lll from the County of Orange in Santa Ana, CA. During her work years she was known as a
skilled typist and excelled in data entry and training coworkers. She lived in Buena Park, CA., at the
time, and after retiring moved to Warsaw, IL., to be closer to her Aunt Rachel. She liked the small town
atmosphere and devoted her time to taking care of her son and rescuing animals, mainly cats. She was
always an avid animal lover. One time, she saw a turtle crossing the road and stopped her car to personally
carry the turtle to the other side of road to make sure it made it across safely.
Marla was an enthusiastic movie buff and would travel to Keokuk, Quincy, Burlington and Fort Madison
to see the latest movie. She loved to try different restaurants in the local small towns she visited.
Marla was always young at heart and child-like in her love for toys and Barbies. She would go to
McDonald’s and order a happy meal for herself just to get the latest collectible.
Marla was a people person and loved learning about different cultures. She was a kind and loving person
and her faith and love of God carried her to the last days of her life
Services will be scheduled at a later date.
Internment will be at the Oakland Cemetery in Warsaw, IL.

Jerry Laverne Nesbit, 77, of Murray, Utah, formerly of Warsaw, passed
away at 12:00 PM, January 30, 2024, at his home.
Jerry was born December 28, 1946, the son of Lloyd Laverne and Henrietta
Adalia (Heineke) Nesbit in Keokuk, Iowa. He graduated from Warsaw High
School in 1965 and went on to take courses in computer sciences in
Chicago. It was a lifetime career that he greatly enjoyed. Jerry also loved
reading and teaching the Bible and could often be found teaching others
about Christ.
Jerry is survived by two sisters, Patricia Vickers of Elvaston and Janie
Barnett of Warsaw; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Shirley and Mary
Katherine in infancy.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, February 24, 2024, at

Larry James Adamson

1943-2024

     Larry Adamson, 80 of Kahoka passed away Monday, February 19, 2024 at his home in Kahoka.

     He was born August 19, 1943 in Luray, MO, the son of James Franklin and Neva Lucille McCarty Adamson.  He attended Kahoka High School.

     Larry was a veteran of the United States Army and proudly served his country.

     Larry was united in marriage to Paula Hale and to this union two children were born, a stillborn daughter, Dawn and Dani. They later divorced. He then married Nancy Stott Bunker on November 23, 1979. To this union is where the five D’s became one. Dennis, Daryl, Denise, Dawn and Dani.

     He is survived by his wife of forty-four years, Nancy Adamson of Kahoka, a daughter Dawn Uhlmeyer (Darian) of Troy, MO, son, Dani Adamson (Marianne) of Raymore, MO, three stepchildren, Dennis Bunker, Daryl Bunker and Denise Munguia (Oscar), grandchildren, Brett Uhlmeyer, Brianne (Brandon) Wielms, Dalen (Alyssa) Adamson, Tristen Uhlmeyer, Kayden Uhlmeyer, Colton Adamson, Amy Bunker, April Dean (Daniel), Amanda Young, Danielle Bunker, Devin Bunker, Daryl Bunker “DJ” (Brooke), Alicia Munguia, Dammon Bunker and Victoria Munguia and great-grandchildren, Alexia Goemaat, Kidn Dean, Ridge Steele, Cloie Young, Natalee Ball, Dantae Dean, Ethan Banes, Jacob Ball, Tanner O’Shea, Zeona Dean, Easton Bunker, Jaxx Hodson, Dontea Bunker, Alaina Bunker, Hennessey Bunker, Isaiah Bunker, Hazley Wielms, Katalina Allsup, Westley Bunker, Sailor Munguia, Willow Bunker, Guinevere Wielms, Oliver Bunker, Mason Bunker, Anastasia Bunker, Ainsley Bunker, Baby Wielms in March and baby Bunker in May. He is also survived by his sister, Jeannie Ray of Luray, sisters-in-law, Janet Adamson of Doubs, IA, Rozella Younker (Gary) of Denver, CO and Judy Stott of Keokuk along with numerous nieces and nephews.

     He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Carl Adamson, a sister, Mary Dieterich and her husband Norman, brothers-in-law, Larry Ray, Ramo Stott, Danny Stott, and Clarence Stott, sister-in-law, Louise Rockhold and a nephew, Rusty Ray.

     Larry worked with his dad in construction. He was known as a truck driver most of his life, working at the sandpit in Wayland, MO for the Kahoka Rock Quarry. He later drove over the road for Holland Trucking in Keokuk and Bud Campbell in Wayland.

He loved his coffee at Ma and Pa’s, Cookies, Steve’s or Ayerco, wherever the gossip took him. He loved to talk politics. He was one of the founding members to start the Clark County Rescue Squad. He was involved with his daughter’s Girl Scout Troops and a big help to his wife, especially all the camping with his big blue Suburban and many adventures over the years. He loved hunting and fishing with his sons.

     Most of all he loved spending time with his family and was lovingly known as “Tickle Papa” by his great-grandchildren.

     A memorial service will be held 6:30 p.m. Friday, February 26, 2024 at the Vigen Memorial Home in Kahoka. 

     Visitation will be held from 5 – 6:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home with the family meeting with friends at that time.

Jaqueline “Jackie” Faye Zufall, 63, of Quincy, passed away at the Timber Point
Healthcare Center in Camp Point, Illinois on Sunday, February 18, 2024.
Jackie was born October 6, 1960, the daughter of Archie Williams and Barbara
Lavanway in Louisiana, Missouri. She was a homemaker that loved to crochet,
sing, and spend time with her grandchildren.
Jackie is survived by her children, Amy Zufall of Quincy, Illinois, Jeremy (Roxi)
Zufall of Keokuk, Iowa and Christal Killian of Quincy; grandchildren, Christina and
Christopher Killian and Kristian and Katheryne Zufall.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and siblings, Connie Palmer, Andy and
Mike Shoemaker and Tina Williams.

Charles “Chuck” Michael Haack, 46, of Warsaw, passed away on Monday, February 19, 2024, in
Warsaw surrounded by his family.
Chuck was born on September 19, 1977, in Joliet, Illinois, the son of Edward Haack and Cynthia
“Cindy” Jean (Sherman) Haack Brokual. He graduated from Lincolnway Central High School in
New Lenox, Illinois, in 1995. On June 12, 2009, he was united in marriage to Julie (Hanahan)
Dudeck in Ontongon, Michigan. She survives.
Chuck was employed as a bricklayer, most recently working for Rupp Masonry. He was a
member of Warsaw Assembly of God and the APA Billiards League. Some of his hobbies
included shooting pool, bowling, fishing, golfing, shopping and rooting for the Chicago Bears.
Sunday afternoon football was a family tradition in his home. He was very talented and loved to
figure out new things. Chuck will always be remembered for being a hard-working man, a great
friend, and a dedicated and amazing father.
Chuck is survived by his wife Julie Haack of Warsaw; four children: Carolyn Dudeck (fiancé Kevin
Bowler) of Cresthill, Illinois, Nicholas Dudeck of Manhattan, Illinois, Andrew Haack of Warsaw
and Charlotte Haack of Warsaw; his mother Cindy (Richard) Brokual of Warsaw; siblings: April
(Steve) Griffin of Warsaw, Edward Haack of Keokuk, Iowa, and Sandy Brokual Lesniak of
Minooka, Illinois; and six nieces and nephews: Autumn Haack of Hamilton, Dylan Haack of
Warsaw, Kate Griffin of Warsaw, Amelia Brokual of Minooka, Jaxon Lesniak of Minooka and
Georgia Lesniak of Minooka.
Chuck is preceded in death by his father Edward Haack.
Funeral services will be held at 4 pm on Friday, February 23, 2024, at Printy Funeral Home in

Randy Lee Davis

1951-2024

     Randy Lee Davis, 72 of Keokuk, IA passed away Thursday, February 15, 2024 at his home.

     He was born July 14, 1951 in Keokuk, IA the son of Melvin and Naomi Hawley Davis.  Randy graduated from Keokuk High School.

     On October 20, 1978 Randy was united in marriage to Diana Malloy.  She survives.

     Other survivors include three sons, Jeremy Davis of Keokuk, Nathan Davis of Quincy, IL and Shaughnessy Davis (Desiree Greenslaugh) of Keokuk, eight grandchildren, Kegan Davis, Kaysen Davis, Kielea Davis, Jazzlyn Davis, Haylee Davis, Hayden Davis, Kallie Leisenring and Katelyn Leisenring.  He is also survived by three brothers, Denny Davis of Keokuk, Craig Davis of Keokuk and John Davis (Heather) of Keokuk, four sisters, Vickie Plue of Columbia, MO, Melva Hardman of Keokuk, Diana Pennington of Keokuk and June Davis of Keokuk, mother-in-law, Joann Malloy (Charles Howes), three sisters-in-law, Jackie Rankin (Marty), Paula Hogan (Mike) and Jamie Wood (Shawn) and numerous nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews. 

     He was preceded in death by his parents, Melvin and Naomi Davis, one sister, Cheryl Stice, one brother, Melvin Davis, Jr., grandparents, Ernest and Mable Davis and father-in-law, James Malloy.

     Randy had been employed by Henniges for forty-five years, until his retirement. 

     He was an active member of First Christian Church, USW Local 444, where he had served as past union president, and SECU Credit Union and had been the past chair person.  Randy was a dedicated member of the Elks Lodge #106 for twenty-nine years.  During that time, he served as the Exulted Ruler, club secretary and was involved in organizing the Hoop Shoots contest, both locally, state-wide and regionally.  His commitment and leadership within the lodge will be fondly remembered and deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

     Randy was generous with his time and talents and was known for his service to the community.  He volunteered at sporting events at the Keokuk High School and at SCC girls’ basketball games.  He also coached basketball at Cardinal Stritch, refereed basketball games, umpired baseball and softball games and announced soccer games.  In his free time, Randy was an amateur political analyst.  He was known to his family as the remote control holder. 

     A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m., Sunday, at First Christian Church in Keokuk with Pastor David Turner officiating.  The service will be livestreamed on the First Christian Church Facebook page.

     Visitation will be held prior to the service from 5-6 p.m., at the church with family meeting friends at that time.  An Elks memorial service will be held just prior to the service.

Rodney “Rock” Allen Yuskis, 78, of Warsaw, passed away on Saturday, February 17, 2024, at St.
John’s Hospital in Springfield, Illinois.
Rodney was born on July 12, 1945, in Keokuk, Iowa, the son of Alex F. and Doris Claudine
(Acker) Yuskis. He graduated from Warsaw High School in 1963, and on July 22, 1972, he was
united in marriage to the love of his life, Denise Krueger, in Edina, Missouri. She survives.
Rodney was an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Warsaw and served his
country in the United States Army Reserves for six years. Rodney was a lifelong farmer and
owned Rock’s Autobody. Farming was his job, hobby and lifestyle, and he loved the community
that surrounded it. “Jack of all trades, but master of none” is how he would describe himself,
but his family and friends were convinced he could fix just about anything.
Rodney was a man of few words. But when he talked, people listened. He was an active
member of the Warsaw area communities, serving on the Hunt Drainage District Board, the
Warsaw School Board, the Ursa Farmers’ Cooperative Board of Directors, and as a Rocky Run-
Wilcox Township Trustee. He farmed through and helped others make it through three floods in
the Warsaw bottoms. Rodney loved living on the Mississippi River and enjoyed boating, skiing
and any other water activity. He was an avid sports fan, rooting for Illini and the Chiefs. He also
collected antique John Deere tractors.
Rodney loved his family more than anything. He took a great deal of pride in his children and
grandchildren’s sporting events, and attended as many as he could. His love of horses and
animals lives on through his next generations. And although Rodney leaves behind many things
built with his hands, his greatest legacy will be the values and passions he instilled in his family.
Rodney is survived by his wife Denise Yuskis of Warsaw; his son Brock (Ciara) Yuskis of Warsaw;
three daughters: Brigitte Nettesheim of Kenilworth, Illinois, Tara (Christian) Boller of
Brownstown, Michigan, and Courtney Yuskis of Sutter; eleven grandchildren: Victoria, Elisabeth
and D. Alexander Nettesheim, Damen, Delaney, Brooks and Bennett Boller, and Scarlett, Rock,
Stetson and Gianna Yuskis; his brother Stephen Yuskis of Fort Madison, Iowa; his sister Deborah
Yuskis-Mulch of Burlington; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Rodney is preceded in death by his parents.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 10 am on Wednesday, February 21, 2024, at Sacred Heart
Catholic Church in Warsaw. Burial at a later date will be held at Oakland Cemetery in Warsaw.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, February 20, from 4 to 7 pm at Printy Funeral Home in
Warsaw. A Rosary service will be held on Tuesday at 3 pm directly before visitation.

Penelope S. “Penny” Walker, 78, of Carthage, passed away at her sister's
home in Hamilton at 1:00 AM early Friday morning, February 16, 2024.
Penny was born July 14, 1945, to Wilma Spees in Keokuk, Iowa. She
attended Carthage High School, graduating in 1963. She had worked for
several businesses in Springfield, Illinois over the years as a secretary.
Penny is survived by her sister, Cynthia “Cindy” Spees of Hamilton; a
grandson, Bryce Priddy; and two great grandchildren, Alexis and Aiden
Priddy.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, April Bon Devenbaugh; a
brother, James Spees; and her mother, Wilma Spees.
Family services will be held at Rosemont Cemetery in Plymouth at a later

Dr. Richard O. Prior, 92, of Carthage, passed away at 11:30 PM Saturday evening,
February 10, 2024, at Memorial Hospital in Carthage.
Richard was born February 19, 1931, the son of Orvel B. and Minnie (Hopkins)
Prior on the family Centennial farm near Carthage. He graduated from Carthage
High School in 1949, and then was drafted into the U. S. Army. He served in
England during his service time and witnessed the coronation parade of Queen
Elizabeth in 1952. After his Honorable Discharge he graduated from the Palmer
Chiropractic College in Davenport and then opened his office in Warsaw from
1961 until his retirement in 1997. On February 25, 1954, he was united in
marriage to Esther Irene Walker. Richard and Esther where members of the
Smyrna Primitive Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. Their greatest joy
was serving and entertaining church members.
Richard is survived by two sons, Dr. Duane Prior of Warsaw and David Prior of
Carthage; a daughter, Twila (Vince) Carlson of Denver, Colorado; a niece, Marsha
Malloy, that had lived with Richard and Esther for a time; granddaughters,
Brittany (Andrew) King and Kayla Prior; great grandchildren, Kanaan, Eden and
Zion King; two sisters, Marjorie Ridings of Greenville, Illinois and Myrtle (Chester)
White of Carthage; a brother, Charles (Mary) Prior of Deerfield, Wisconsin; and
many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Esther in 2017; a granddaughter,
Andrea Prior; and sisters, Hilda Mae Harris, Joyce Allen and Bonnie Baker.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday, February 15, 2024, at Printy

Sally Ann Fogle, 85, of Hamilton, Illinois, passed away surrounded by her family on Wednesday,
February 7, 2024, at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames, Iowa.
Sally was born on June 29, 1938, in Des Moines, Iowa, the daughter of David and Harriett
(O’Hara) Bump. On January 3, 1959, she was united in marriage to Kenneth “Kenny” Robert
Fogle in Des Moines. He preceded her in death on May 4, 2017.
Sally was a homemaker who also worked in the school system and as a certified nurse’s
assistant. She attended Cornerstone Church in Keokuk and was active in Bible studies and the
Tri-State Women’s Group. Sally enjoyed sewing and playing the piano at Montebello Nursing
Home in Hamilton. She loved her dog Mollie, but most of all, she loved her family.
Sally is survived by three children: Bob (Yota) Fogle of Washington, Iowa, Jeanie (Greg)
Musgrove of Ames, Iowa, and Tony (Megan) Fogle of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; her daughter-in-law
Angie Fogle of Cedar Rapids; three sisters: Mary (Roger) Lowe of Salt Lake City, Utah, Cathie
(Dave) Lange of Eldridge, Iowa, and Jeanie Hudson of Des Moines; two brothers: Pat (Mary
Jane) Bump of Bondurant, Iowa, and David Bump of Springfield, Missouri; thirteen
grandchildren and many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Sally is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Kenneth, and two sons Christopher and
Rick Fogle.
A graveside service will be held at 2 pm on Tuesday, February 13, 2024, at Keokuk National
Cemetery in Keokuk. Visitation will be held on Tuesday at DeJong-Greaves-Printy Funeral Home
in Keokuk from 12 to 1:30 pm directly before the service. A procession from the funeral home

Willard James Savage, 90, of Sutter, Illinois passed away at River Hills Assisted Living in Keokuk, Iowa on
February 5, 2024, surrounded by his loving family on the 25 th anniversary of his son Robert’s passing.
Will was born June 9, 1933, in Deer Ridge, Missouri, the son of Wesley and Alice (Menke) Savage. He
graduated from La Belle High School in La Belle, Missouri. He was united in marriage to Nadine Koehler
on November 7, 1953, at Bethlehem United Church of Christ in Sutter, Illinois. Will always put God and
his family first.
Will was a lifelong farmer and mechanic in the Sutter area. He owned and operated Will’s Service Center
for many years. He had a creative mind, concocting many innovative and useful solutions on day-to-day
items that most others would have used as-is or just thrown away. Will could be found on many
summer evenings with Nadine watching his children and then grandchildren play softball, and he
wouldn’t hesitate to pick up a glove and play catch with them. He was an avid Cubs fan and mushroom
hunter. He enjoyed putting puzzles together, playing pool, wintering in Texas, and passing his love for
Roger Miller songs down to his children and grandchildren. Will was a long-time member of Bethlehem
United Church of Christ where he served in various capacities on the Church Council.
Will is survived by his wife of 70 years, Nadine; children, Don (Linda) Savage of Sutter, Illinois, and
Tammy (Jeff) Brower of Cape Coral, Florida; Eight grandchildren, Michelle (Tim Craig) Tinder of Ft.
Madison, Iowa, Rex Savage of Hamilton, Illinois, Chad (Elizabeth) Savage of Denmark, Iowa, Megan
Savage of Windsor, Colorado, Greg (Katie) Savage of Carthage, Illinois, Kelsey (Peter) Davis of Aurora,
Colorado, Shelby Kropp of Aurora, Colorado and Taylor Kropp of Des Moines, Iowa; he is also survived by
nine great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Robert Savage; his daughter in law, Peggy Savage; a

Elaine Gronewold of Carthage IL, age 87, passed away on February 6, 2024 at the University of
Iowa Hospital in Iowa City. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother
and friend who will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Elaine was born on December 8, 1936 in Keokuk, Iowa, to Delbert and Jessie Hempen Bachman.
She graduated from Hamilton High School and then attended Gem City Business College in
Quincy. On June 16, 1956, Elaine was united in marriage to her husband, Max. She was employed
by Drydens in Keokuk. When they started a family, she was a stay at home mom, which was a
priority to her. After raising their children, she worked at PCA/Farm Credit Services in Carthage
for nearly 30 years.
Elaine and Max enjoyed square dancing for a number of years. They were also longtime
members of Trinity Lutheran Church, where they raised their family and where Elaine taught
Sunday School for many years. She also played the piano for Sunday School and occasionally
played for church services, especially Palm Sunday. Her hobbies included gardening, sewing,
baking, especially pies for funeral dinners. In later years, she enjoyed Seek & Finds.
Elaine is survived by her loving husband, Max, their children, Greg (Mindi) Gronewold, Merlin
(Jolene) Gronewold and Roberta Maue, and their grandchildren, Ashton (Madalyn) Gronewold,
Brooke (Evan) Davidson, Claire Maue, Luke (Tayler) Maue, and Ian Maue and 5 great grand
children with #6 due to May.
Elaine was preceded in death by her parents, Delbert and Jessie Hempen Bachman and her
brother, Alan Bachman.
Elaine’s memory will be cherished by all who knew her.

 Peter Maerz passed away on Monday, February 5, 2024 at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Illinois. He was surrounded by his loved ones including his wife, daughter, grandchildren, and siblings.

     Pete was born January 19, 1959 in Keokuk, Iowa to Carl and Helen Maerz. Both of his parents preceded him in death. Pete was the youngest of his siblings and was also preceded in death by his brother Larry and his brother-in-law Gary Wood.

     Pete's first marriage was to Susan Cobb and they had one daughter, Devyn (Maerz) Budde. Pete later married Melodie (Harrington) Maerz and they shared 25 years together before his passing.

     Pete graduated from Cardinal Stritch High School in 1977. He went on to work at Hubinger's before going to Henniges Automotive (then Sheller Globe) where he worked for 32 years as an engineer and technical writer before retiring.

     He helped early on with the wiring and electrical work for the City of Christmas and led a grief support group in Keokuk.

     Pete is survived by his wife, Melodie Maerz; daughter Devyn Budde and son-in-law Craig Budde, as well as his grandchildren: Storm Budde, Ziah Hoelscher, Scarlet Hoelscher, and Dean Budde. Pete is also survived by his stepchildren Steven Thompson (Angel Thompson) and Rebecca Younk (David Younk) and his step-grandchildren: Taylor Thompson, Aiden Thompson, Dusty Younk, and Sailor Younk.

     Pete is additionally survived by his siblings: Joan Wood, Michael (Sue) Maerz, Steven (Sheila) Maerz, Paul Maerz and his fiance Shelley Walden, and Susie (Paul) Westermeyer. Pete's surviving family also includes 23 nieces and nephews and many great-nieces and great-nephews.

     Pete was a beloved husband, father, and brother who will be truly missed.

     Friday, February 9th, visitation will be held from 5-7pm at Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, IA with a Rosary preceding at 4:30pm.

     Services will be held Saturday at 11am at All Saints Church with Reverend David Brownfield, Ph.D. officiating.  A luncheon will be held afterwards at the Knights of Columbus Hall.

     Donations in his memory can be made to St. Vincent's Catholic School in Keokuk or the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Randy Joe Stott

1955-2024

     Randy Joe Stott, 68 of Keokuk, IA passed away Monday, February 5, 2024 at Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in Ft. Madison, IA.

     He was born June 3, 1955 in Kirksville, MO the son of Donald and Wilma Dice Stott.  Randy graduated from Scotland County High School with the class of 1973 and from Southeastern Community College in 2007 with Phi Theta Kappa honors.

     On September 16, 1978 Randy was united in marriage to Tina LeMaster in Keokuk.  She survives.

     Other survivors include one daughter, Randi Michelle Waterman (Brian Hoekstra) of Burlington, IA, one son, Jake Stott (Ashley) of California and two grandchildren, Andrew and Brody Waterman as well as one more on the way.  He is also survived by two sisters, Cretia Hesse (Rick) of Kahoka, MO and Patti Runge (John) of Keokuk and several nieces and nephews. 

     He was preceded in death by his parents.

     Randy had been employed by Trellex Rubber in Keokuk and later at Knapheide in Quincy, IL.  He also worked in construction.

     He was a member of Crossview Fellowship.

     Randy and Tina enjoyed traveling together.  He also enjoyed woodworking and watching animal videos.  He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan.  Randy was generous with his time and talents and volunteered as a Meals on Wheels delivery driver.

     A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m., Friday, at Crossview Fellowship in Keokuk with Pastor Kevin Hardcastle officiating.  Burial will be in the Oakland Cemetery in Keokuk.

     Visitation will be held after 1 p.m., Thursday, at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, with family meeting with friends from 5-7 p.m.

Kenneth Robert Knight

1955-2024

     Kenneth Robert Knight, 68 of Cedar Rapids, IA passed away Friday, January 2, 2024 at his home.

     He was born July 29, 1955 in Keokuk, IA the son of Robert and Marian Tweedy Knight.  He graduated from Ft. Madison High School with the class of 1974 and then attended a trade school in Des Moines for two years. 

     Kenneth had been employed by Rockwell Collins in Cedar Rapids, IA for forty-five years.

     He was a member of the National Rifle Association.

     In his younger years, Kenneth enjoyed constructing model air planes, remote control cars and trucks and riding motorcycles.  He always stayed up on current events and what was happening in the world.  Kenneth also enjoyed collecting antique radios that he would rebuild and add to his collections. Most of all, Kenneth loved spending time with his family.

     He is survived by two brothers, Charles Edward Knight of Donnellson, IA and Kyle David Knight (Linda) of Donnellson, IA, two sisters, Carrie James (Ronald) of Ft. Madison, IA and Chris Johnson (Gary) of West Point, IA, two nieces, Heather James (Caleb Nelson) and Crystal James of Cedar Rapids, IA and one grand-niece, Autumn Thurman who is currently stationed in San Diego with the U.S. Navy.

     Kenneth was preceded in death by his parents and twin brother and sister, Keith and Kay Knight in infancy.

     A service will be held at a later date.

William David Rodgers, Jr.

1930-2024

     William David Rodgers, Jr., 94 of Burlington, IA died Saturday, February 3, 2024 at his home in Burlington.

     He was born January 7, 1930 in Berkley, CA the son of William David and Sadie Noble Rodgers. 

     He proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War.

     On November 26, 1955 he was united in marriage to Shirley Green in Sebastopol, CA.  She preceded him in death on January 17, 1996.

     William was employed with Wood Brothers in Gallatin, MO for fourteen years until his retirement.

     He loved the outdoors and spent as much time as he could fishing and camping.  He enjoyed tinkering around the house and garage making repairs and starting new projects.   Most of all he loved being with his family.

   He is survived by three daughters, Desiree Rodgers of Burlington, Terrea Puterbaugh (David) of Fairbanks, AK, and Alice Petker of Burlington, two sons, Michael Rodgers of Ft. Madison, and Clifford Rodgers of Hamilton, IL.  He is also survived by ten grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren and fifteen great-great grandchildren with one on the way and one niece.

     Besides his wife he was also preceded in death by his parents, one son William David Rodgers III, one sister, Florence Rodgers and one brother Robert Rodgers.

     A private graveside service will be held at a later date.

Gary L. Rockenbach

1939-2024

     Gary L. Rockenbach, 84, of Keokuk passed away Thursday, February 1, 2024 at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City, IA.

     He was born November 25, 1939 the son of Melvin and Doris Swan Rockenbach.  Gary graduated from Keokuk High School with the Class of 1958.  After high school he attended Keokuk Community College for a year. 

     He was inducted into the United States Army on December 18, 1962.  He graduated on June 7, 1963 with a certificate from US Army Southeastern Signal School for the Lineman’s Course.

     Gary was employed at Sheller Globe for forty-three before his retirement. 

     On December 17, 1961, Gary was united in marriage to Linda Thoeny in Keokuk. They recently celebrated sixty-two years of marriage together.   She survives.

     He is also survived by his daughter, Holly Roth (Jay) of Keokuk, IA, one son, Craig Rockenbach of Keokuk, IA, five grandchildren, Sean Burke, Connor Roth, Spencer Roth, Owen Rockenbach and Isis Claiborne.

     He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter in infancy, Kimberly Rockenbach.

     Gary enjoyed watching FOX News and playing the stock market.  He also enjoyed selling on E-Bay where he was a top seller.  He collected robots, tin toys and several other items.  He loved watching “Lost in Space”, “The X-Files”, old movies and science fiction shows.  He also enjoyed tending to his flower gardens and going on vacation with his children.

     Per Gary’s request, military rites will be held at a later date.

Wanda Lorene Harnetiaux, 95, of Carthage, passed away at 9:17 am. At Memorial
Hospital in Carthage on Friday, February 2, 2024.
Wanda was born March 19, 1928, the daughter of Albert and Fae (Hopson)
Wetzel in Basco, Illinois. She graduated from Carthage High School and lived her
whole life in this local area. Wanda was united in marriage to James R.
Harnetiaux in Carthage on September 7, 1946. Wanda worked for over thirty
years at the local phone company in Carthage and the last four years before she
retired, she worked in the Aledo telephone office due to the closing of our local
office. She was very involved with her church and she and Jim enjoyed traveling
in their motor home and camping.
Wanda is survived by her sons, Daniel (Brenda) Harnetiaux, of Carthage and
James (Linda) Harnetiaux of Tennessee, Illinois; grandchildren, Krista (John)
Artman of Tennessee, Illinois, and Nathan (Anna) Harnetiaux of Plainfield, Illinois.
Also surviving are six great grandchildren, Connor, Kailee, Karli and Kennedy
Artman and Jacob and Jennifer Harnetiaux.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, James; and a brother,
Walton Wetzel.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, February 10, 2024, at Printy
Funeral Home in Carthage with burial to follow in Moss Ridge Cemetery in
Carthage. Visitation will be held from 9:00 AM until time of services at 11:00 at
the funeral home in Carthage. Memorials may be directed to the American

Shirley J. Wood

1929 – 2023

     Shirley J. Wood, 94, of Lenexa, KS, passed away Sunday, December 24, 2023, at St. Luke’s South Hospital in Overland Park, KS.

     She was born June 3, 1929, the daughter of George J. Seabold and Edith P. Rein Seabold in Keokuk, IA. She graduated from Keokuk High School in 1946.

     On January 2, 1948, she was married to Oren Dale Wood in Keokuk, IA. He preceded her in death July 25, 1989.

     She is survived by two daughters, Karen J. Fox (Terry) of St. Charles, MO, and Beverly A. Nichols (Craig) of Lenexa, KS. She is also survived by two grandchildren, Kristoffer A. Nichols (Jessica) of DeSoto, KS and Ashley E. Oehrlein (Alexander) of West Des Moines, IA, three great grandsons, Lucas R. Nichols, Gabriel T. Oehrlein and Nicholas J. Oehrlein along with two step-great granddaughters, Macey and Sydney Zebley.

     Besides her husband, she was also preceded in death by her parents, her sisters, Dorothy M., Helen Ruth and Martha F. Seabold, Maxine E. French, Wilma Louise Laubersheimer and brothers, George H., Carl A. and Robert D. Seabold.

     In 1948, Shirley and her husband made their home in St. Louis where she worked as an office manager and treasurer at Ashby Manufacturing and later at Ellsworth Industries. She retired and returned to Keokuk to live in and care for the family home built in1868. She wintered in Lenexa for 8 yrs. and moved there in 2022 to be close to her daughter and her family.

     She loved flowers, gardening, feeding her birds, MOWING her grass and her family deeply.  

     Shirley was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ, Keokuk, IA.

     Visitation will be held Saturday, February 10, 2024, at Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk at 10:00 a.m. with service following at 11:00 a.m.

Helen Ann Harms, 85, of Quincy, passed away at 6:25 PM Friday, February
2, 2024, at the Good Samaritan Home in Quincy.
Helen was born September 27, 1938, the daughter of Otis and Mabel
(Kunz) Wemhoner in Lima, Illinois. She graduated from Unity High School
in 1956. On April 27, 1957, she was united in marriage to Donald Harms at
the Sutter Salem Bible Church near Sutter. He survives. Helen had
worked as a secretary in Quincy and at Davis-Cleaver Process Company in
her younger years and later spent many years as a school bus driver for
Unity School District 4, a job she greatly enjoyed. In 1995 she was one of
the first women to enroll and graduate from the John Wood OTR driving
school and she and her husband drove over 1.5 million miles together from
1995 until their retirement in 2002. She was a member of the Sutter Salem
Bible Church near Sutter.
Helen is survived by her husband, Donald, of Quincy; two children, Steven
(Janet) Harms of Quincy and Julie (Doug) Siebers of Belleville, Illinois; two
grandchildren, Taylor (fiancé, Sarah Smith) Siebers and Hunter Siebers;
and one sister, Marge Wollbrink of Quincy.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother, Merlin
Wemhoner.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Wednesday, February 7, 2024, at
Sutter Salem Bible Church near Sutter with burial to follow in New
Providence Cemetery in Ursa. Visitation will be held from 4:00 – 7:00 PM

Henry Dale “Hank” Miller, 88, of Warsaw, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loved
ones at his home on Thursday, February 1, 2024.
Hank was born on May 15, 1935, at the family home in Sutter, Illinois. On April 13, 1958, he was
united in marriage to Gloria Bowles in Keokuk, Iowa. She survives.
Hank held several jobs throughout the years, working as a mechanic/shop foreman at the Mac
Rambler, AMC and GMC Truck dealership in Keokuk Iowa; as shop foreman at John Deere Valley
Supply Construction Equipment in Keokuk Iowa and driving for St. Louis Gear Company, Keokuk
Iowa. However, his joy was found in farming, working as a farmer for his entire life even while
working full time at other jobs.
Hank proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict and was a
member of the Hamilton VFW. He enjoyed deer hunting, reading, listening to country music
and square dancing, where he met his wife of sixty-five years. He was known as “Hammering
Hank” or “Handy Hank” for his ability to fix, repair or weld anything. But to his grandchildren he
was simply known as “Poppy”. Poppy was the go-to person for his grandchildren for tractor
rides around the farm or help when a vehicle broke down. Hank was a very private person, but
he could always be found enjoying his favorite meal, Chicken Night at DJs in Warsaw.
Hank is survived by his wife Gloria of Warsaw; his son Michael Miller of Hamilton; his daughter
Carla McClain of Nauvoo, Illinois; five grandchildren: Jonathan Miller of Hamilton, Justin Miller
of Hamilton, Amy (Luke) Newlan of New London, Iowa, Adam Miller of Keokuk, Iowa and Alexis
(Justin) Woolverton of Niota, Illinois; five great-grandchildren: Alex and Aaron Brotherton,
Abigail Newlan, and Briley and Natalie Miller; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Hank is preceded in death by his parents, his granddaughter Danielle McClain; and seven
siblings: Nancy Hitz, Vera Bright, Andy Miller, John Miller, Walter “Popeye” Miller, Jerry Miller,
August “Butch” Miller.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am on Saturday, February 10, 2024, at Printy Funeral
Home in Warsaw, with burial to follow at Oakland Cemetery in Warsaw. Military honors will be
rendered by the United States Army and the Hancock County Honor Guard. Visitation will be
held on Friday, February 9, 2024, from 3 to 7 pm, with family meeting friends from 5 to 7 pm.

Jerry Lee Wichman, 76, of Warsaw, passed away at his home on Monday, January 29, 2024.
 
Jerry was born August 2, 1947, the son of Fredrick and MaryLou (Harrison) Wichman in Keokuk,
Iowa. He graduated from Warsaw High School.   In 1967, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and
served two tours of duty in Vietnam, receiving several commendations, including the Purple
Heart.  Upon his Honorable Discharge, he returned home, helping his mother and father on the
farm. He sold OsGold seed corn and also helped his dad develop and maintain multiple
properties. Jerry also worked for the United States Postal Service in Warsaw for many years. He
owned and operated Wick’s Saloon, a popular local bar. After retirement from the Postal
Service, he continued working with his father in general contracting construction.  Jerry had
served as President of the local Jaycees, was Post Commander of the Warsaw V.F.W. and a
long-time member of the Elks Club. 
Jerry loved to golf, once getting a hole-in-one at the Carthage golf course. He also enjoyed
planting magnificent gardens with his family, cooking, watching his favorite sports on tv and
spending time with his little dogs, Madison and Lucy.  Jerry would go above and beyond to help
his fellow man or woman, never leaving them behind in a time of need. Most of all, his belief in
God spoke in volume. 
Jerry is survived by his daughter: Renee (Timothy) Marlin of Warsaw; grandchildren: Desiree
(John Newbill) Hopkins, Tyler Hopkins, Dustin Marlin, Dalton (Raechelle McKay) Marlin and
Hunter Marlin; great-grandchildren: Kylee Newbill, Ava Newbill, Savanah Newbill and Declan
Marlin; and one sister: Marlene (Dale) Weigand.
 
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents and sister Julie Dee in infancy. 
 
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, February 6, 2024, at Printy Funeral Home in
Warsaw with military rites rendered by the U.S. Army and Hancock County Honor Guard. 
Visitation will be held from 9:00 AM until time of services at 11:00 AM at the funeral home.
