Helen Lucille Shaw

On June 17, 1929, an amazing baby girl, Helen Lucille Shaw, was born in the four-way-stop town of Atlas, Illinois. The middle child and only girl of three, she grew up stubborn and self-sufficient, outliving her parents Gladys and Ed Garoutte and her brothers Jimmy and John Garoutte. Her education started in Atlas, Pleasant Hill, finally graduating from Pittsfield High School, Pittsfield, Illinois, in 1947. She moved to Louisiana, Missouri, to work for Ma Bell as a telephone operator, until she was swept off her feet by the love of her life, James Ralph Shaw, a dashing World War II veteran of the European Theatre. Their romance started on the dance floor to Big Band music, “The only good music” according to Helen. Helen and Jim married on August 14, 1949, first enjoying college life at the University of Illinois and then Western Illinois University, before settling down in Warsaw, Illinois. Helen lovingly raised five children: James Mikel, Rick Allen, Karrie Lynn, Karen Ann and Clay Thomas Shaw over the next thirty-six years. With the loss of her lifelong love and partner Jim in 1974, at the age of forty-nine, she went back to school to get her Secretary and Nurses Aide certification. She worked for a local nursing home until her mother required her tender care for the next twelve years until her death at age ninety-five. She was a Warsaw resident for thirty-seven years, an Atlas, Illinois, resident for a total of thirty years, and nineteen years in Kirksville, Missouri. She was an avid Kirksville Aquatic Center aerobics member, best known for announcing “Barn Door”, and correcting any changes in the routine. She was proud to be one of the oldest in her aerobics class. She was seen most evenings riding her three-wheeled bicycle with her black dog, affectionately termed Dorothy and Toto, around the high school and middle schools of Kirksville, making many friends along the way. She was a Brownie Scout/Girl Scout leader, courier of forgotten things for her children in school, taxi driver to skating rinks and horse shows, and a loving daughter, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and surrogate mother/grandmother to all of her children’s and grandchildren’s friends. She traveled all over the United States including Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico. She was a great co-pilot for horse shows and trail rides from Texas to Michigan. She was never one to turn down a chance to go on a trip. She was fearless in life, including driving a cart in horse shows at the age of seventy-seven. She was amazing, the glue of the Shaw family. She left this earthly place at the age of ninety-one and one-fourth years old on September 12, 2020. A feisty angel on earth as she will be in heaven. She leaves her legacy behind, including her children James “Mike” Shaw of Hamilton, Illinois, Rick and wife Barbara Shaw of Warsaw, Illinois, Karrie (Shaw) Baker of Pekin, Illinois, Dr. Karen (Shaw) and husband Dr. Tod Sylvara of Kirksville, Missouri, Clay Shaw of Anchorage, Alaska; grandchildren Casey and wife Amanda Shaw of Hamilton, Illinois, Ryan Shaw of Basco, Illinois, Benjamin Baker of Pekin, Illinois, John Sylvara and Jimmy Salvara of Kirksville, Missouri; great-grandchildren Abigail Shaw and fiancé Kyle Baumann of Quincy, Illinois, Cooper Shaw of Hamilton, Illinois, and Jade Archie of Quincy, Illinois.

Cara Sue Finton

Cara Sue Finton, affectionately known as Shorty, passed away at the age of fifty-six on Thursday, September 10, 2020, at her home in Warsaw, Illinois.

Cara was born on July 31, 1964, in Carthage, Illinois, the daughter of Maurice and Nellie (Summers) Cummings. She was united in marriage to Matthew “Matt” Finton on November 4, 2000, in Basco, Illinois. He survives.

Cara loved people! Her defining trait is that love. She loved working at the Carthage mental health workshop packing boxes, cleaning tables, and even mowing, because she enjoyed the folks there so much. She loved to walk around Warsaw and see everyone. "Shorty" was very well known to all. Cara really had a great time at the Lighthouse Worship Center in Hamilton, especially with the women's group. She spent time journaling, doing puzzlebooks, listening to music, and watching the Cubs, all while drinking her favorite beverage, Pepsi. Most important, though, has always been family. Frances Lorinda Glory Sanders

Frances Lorinda Glory Sanders

1942-2020

Frances Lorinda Glory Sanders, 78, of Keokuk died Thursday, September 3, 2020 at the Blessing Hospital in Quincy, IL.

She was born August 1, 1942 in Tahlequah, OK, the daughter of William (Cherokee tribe) and Agnes Morris (Choctaw tribe) Glory. She was the fourth child of six born to Bill and Agnes.

Her father gave her the nickname “Ginny” (like the guinea fowl) as it seemed she was always jumping around doing this and that and hardly ever stood still, so one day her dad just told her she was just like one of the guineas they had in the yard and it stuck.

Frances graduated from Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, OK with a major in Physical Education.

After college she and a friend traveled to Iowa after a representative of Keokuk schools went down to Northeastern State University to recruit teachers.  She met Frank Sanders on that trip and nineteen days later on February 19, 1965, they were married at the Alexandria Presbyterian Church in Alexandria, MO.  They were happily married for fifty-five plus years.

She had to return to Northeastern State University to pick up more credits for teaching in Iowa so Frank spent a lot of time on the road that first summer of their marriage.  She then came back to Iowa and attended Western Illinois University in Macomb, IL and obtained the remaining credits to start teaching.

She taught in several schools in Keokuk and ended her teaching career as the art teacher at the Keokuk Middle School where she retired on June 30, 2004.  During her time teaching she also did some coaching and served on the Keokuk City Council.  She was also the co-owner of Southeast Iowa Aluminum Foundry.

Frances was a member of Alexandria Presbyterian Church in Alexandria, MO, where she served as an elder and was on many boards for the church.

She loved art in all forms, the brighter the better, also anything that related to her Indian heritage.  She collected many, many things from Noah’s arks to Beanie Babies and everything in between. Her house reflected this and she surrounded herself with all these things.  The walls and shelves of the house display her collections everywhere.

Her favorite hobby had to be shopping.  She had so many people she would buy gifts for and each one was very special to her.  She would search until she would find just that perfect gift and it gave her so much joy to be able to present that gift to them and watch their reaction to it.

Her absolute favorite thing was her family.  Standing out amongst all her collections are pictures of the family.  There is not a space in the house that does not have a photo of someone dear to her.  Photo albums line the shelves, full of the pictures that loved ones have sent her through the years.  She could tell you who was in each picture, when it was taken, what the occasion was, and usually a story to go with it.

She was a wonderful woman who enjoyed her family and friends immensely, she was strong in her ways, but even stronger in her love.  She will be greatly missed.

She is survived by her husband Frank Sanders of Keokuk, two daughters, Laura (Jeff) Townsley of Okmulgee, OK and Teresa (Scott) Nichols of Keokuk, one son, Frank (Holly) Sanders of Winchester, VA, many grandchildren, and great grandchildren, a sister, Maxine Glory of Tahlequah, OK and many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the family to purchase a park bench in Keokuk Rand Park in memory of Frances.  Memorials may be sent in care of Vigen Memorial Home, 1328 Concert St., Keokuk, IA, 52632.

There will be a small dedication memorial at the time the bench is placed.

Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.vigenmemorialhome.com
