Frederick H. “Fred” Figge, 76, of Keokuk, passed away on Sunday, June 26, 2022, at River Hills Village in Keokuk, Iowa. 

Fred was born on May 28, 1946, in Toledo, Ohio, the son of Frederick and Muriel (Carpenter) Figge. In 1964, he was united in marriage to Linda Klingel in Warsaw, Illinois. They were later divorced. Fred graduated from Warsaw High School in 1964 and went on to receive his teaching degree from Culver-Stockton College in 1968. 

Fred was employed as a math teacher for 33 years at Keokuk High School. He coached football, basketball, baseball, and golf, for a total of 85 seasons which he was very proud of.  He enjoyed watching his students have fun and mature in both their academics and their athletics. One of his greatest joys was that he was able to help so many young people. He greatly enjoyed all the teams he coached, but the ‘95 and ’96 boys golf teams that placed 2nd and 1st at the class 3A State Tournament always brought a smile to his face!  

Fred could often be found golfing at the Elks Club where he was member for 49 years, playing cards with his family, or napping in his chair. He also enjoyed word jumbles and crossword puzzles. He was an avid sports fan and rooted for the LA Dodgers, the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Fighting Illini.

Fred is survived by two sons: Rod (Cindy) Figge of Hamilton, Illinois, and Troy (Jody) Figge of Quincy, Illinois; his brother Brian Figge of Keokuk, Iowa; six grandchildren: Brittany (Luke) Bavery, and Emma, Drew, Kennedy, Thea, and Noelle Figge; two great-grandchildren: Harper and Baylor Bavery; his special companion Gail Hark of Keokuk; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Fred is preceded in death by his parents, his brother Kurt Figge, and sister-in-law Susie (Sonneborn) Figge.

Fred’s life will be celebrated with a funeral service at 5 pm on Wednesday, July 6, 2022, at DeJong-Greaves-Printy Funeral Home in Keokuk, with Minister Gerome Crayton officiating. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday from 2 to 5 pm directly before the service. There will also be an Elks Service.

Memorials may be directed to the Keokuk High School boys and girls golf teams or the Deer Run Youth Golf Clinic.

Terry James Brackenbury, 52, of Hamilton, Illinois, passed away on Wednesday, June 22, 2022,
at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Illinois.
Terry was born on May 2, 1970, in Chino Hills, California, the son of Harry Paul and Betty Jean
(Kruckow) Brackenbury. He graduated from Hamilton High School in 1988, and he was united in
marriage to Amy Lynn Wear on October 16, 1993. Terry later married Deborah “Debbie”
(McCracken) Miller on July 4, 2021.
Terry was employed as a financial manager at various car dealerships in the area and worked at
Mississippi Valley Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center as a CNA. He attended Anchor of Hope
and Healing Streams Church in Keokuk. In his free time, he enjoyed spending time fishing and
playing poker. Terry loved his family and his dogs Lucy and Hope.
Terry is survived by his wife Debbie of Hamilton; his son Andrew (Fiancé Leslie McDavid)
Brackenbury of Chicago, Illinois; two daughters: Emma and Sophia Brackenbury of La Harpe,
Illinois; two brothers Harry Paul (Kathie) Brackenbury and Dean (Ann) Forquer, both of Keokuk;
and three sisters: Linda (Alan Chase) Brackenbury, Susan Brackenbury and Deborah
Brackenbury, all of California.
Terry is preceded in death by his parents Harry Brackenbury, Betty Jean Brackenbury and
Raymond Cady; and his sister Katherine Brackenbury.
A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.
As an organ and tissue donor, Terry gave the most precious gift anyone could give; the gift to
save the lives of others.

Della Ruth Walker, 85, of Carthage, passed away at 6:00 AM Friday morning, June 24, 2022, at The Elms in Macomb.

Della was born February 21, 1937, the daughter of William Girden and Gladys Brumbaugh Patrick in Clark County, Missouri and then was a life-long resident of Carthage.  She was united in marriage to Lyle Walker and they later divorced.  Della loved spending time with her children and grandchildren.  She loved flower gardening and could always be found keeping active by working in it.  She had three beloved dogs, Shiner, Brownie, Patches and Bandit.

Della is survived by her children, Melvin Walker of Lomax, Jim (Vickie) Walker of Norway, Iowa, Danny (Tressa) Walker of Carthage, Joe (Carol) Walker of Carthage, Sam Walker of Long Boat Key, FL , Connie Walker of Bradenton, FL and Roberta Smith of Quincy; thirteen grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; 6 great great grandchildren; a brother, Jack Patrick of Littleton; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Barbara Sue in infancy; and siblings, Gene, Junior, Robland, Kenny and Waldo Patrick and Mary Frances Londrie; two sisters-in-law; two granddaughters; and her lifetime companion, Bernard Lafferty, in 2014.  

Funeral services will be held at Printy Funeral Home in Carthage on Tuesday, June 28, 2022 at 11:00 AM with burial to follow in Moss Ridge Cemetery in Carthage.  Visitation will be held from 9:00 AM until time of services at 11:00 at Printy Funeral Home in Carthage.     Larry Flambeau, 73, of Keokuk died Thursday, June 23, 2022 at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, IL.

      He was born on September 20, 1948 in Keokuk, IA the son of Rhea and Ferne Flambeau.

     Larry graduated from Keokuk High School with the class of 1967.  He proudly served his country during the Vietnam War in the United States Navy from 1968 - 1972.

     On December 27, 1969, he was united in marriage to Gwynn Harmon in Keokuk, IA. 

     Larry retired from Roquette as a railcar supervisor after twenty five years.  Larry liked keeping busy after he retired and decided to go back to work.  He work for AMI Plumbing Supply in Keokuk, Phoenix Fabricators and the Hy-Vee gas station.

     He was a member of St Paul United Church of Christ, the American Legion and the Southside Boat Club and served on the board for seven years.

     Larry enjoyed the outdoors, riding his motorcycle, playing golf, boating on the Mississippi or fishing.  He was a gifted woodworker and enjoyed countless hours in his workshop building snowman and pumpkin crafts.

     He is survived by his wife, Gwynn Flambeau of Keokuk; two children, Todd Flambeau of Keokuk and Cari Flambeau-Johnson (Brandon Smith) of Hamilton, two granddaughters, Brandie Wolff and Brooklyn Johnson, three great grandchildren, Kamryn Wolff, Landon LaBonte and Rudi Gwynn Gonzalez; one sister-in-law, Kay Flambeau of Warsaw, two brothers-in-law, Terry Schilson of North Carolina and Gary Barnes of Keokuk along with many nieces and nephews.

     He was preceded in death by his mother, Ferne Flambeau Eppers, father, Rhea Flambeau, step-father, Chuck Eppers, sister, Linda Schilson, two brothers, Roger Flambeau and Randy Flambeau.

     A memorial service will be will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk with Pastor Mike Shea officiating. Burial with military rites will be held in the Keokuk National Cemetery.

     Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service from noon – 1 p.m. at the funeral home with the family meeting with friends at that time.

John Edward Moss

1953 – 2022

     John Edward Moss, 68, of Keokuk, IA, died Wednesday, June 22, 2022 at his home.

     He was born on October 23, 1953 in Keokuk, IA, the son of Dane Edward and LaFern Mary Susan (Heimer) Moss.

     He had most recently been employed at Henniges in Keokuk.

     John enjoyed fishing and was a St. Louis Cardinal fan.  He enjoyed hanging out with his friends at local establishments.

     John is survived by five daughters, Tonya Walker of Keokuk, Kathern Blakely of Keokuk, Lisa Donaldson of Ft. Madison, , Mary Skinner (Keith) of Keokuk and Marcia Lott of Keokuk.  He is also survived by thirteen grandchildren, two sisters, Martha Andrews and Mary Lang, one half-brother, Sonny Gipe and a special friend, Ann Galbreath.

     He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Betty Snow and one half-sister, Juanita Schreiber.

     A Gathering of Remembrance will be held from 10 am – 12 noon Monday, June 27, 2022 at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk.  Burial will be in the Buena Vista Mound Cemetery.

William T. “Billy” Vinson

1981-2022

     William T. “Billy” Vinson, 41 of West Des Moines, IA, formerly of Keokuk, IA died Saturday, June 18, 2022 at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City, IA.

     He was born March 21, 1981 in Keokuk, IA the son of Terry and Maria Reeves Vinson.  Billy graduated from Keokuk High School with the class of 1999 and from Kirkwood Community College with an Associates of Arts in communication.

     Billy was a member of Faith Family Church in Keokuk.

     He had been employed in “IT” information technology department at several businesses in Dallas, TX.

     Billy loved the outdoors and especially enjoyed camping, fishing, vegetable gardening and hiking.  He was talented cook and enjoyed eating.  Billy liked to work out at the gym, flying drones and most of all he loved Dallas, his min pin.  His friendship was a gift he gave freely and he touched the lives of many.

     He is survived by his mother, Maria Wessel (Mark) of Montrose, IA, his father, Terry Vinson (Beth) of Keokuk, one brother, Matthew Vinson (Sara O’Brien) of Waukee, IA, two sisters, Tera Vinson (Mandy Morris) of Montrose, IA and Kelli Graham (Adam Hamad) of Dallas, TX.  He is also survived by his step-father, Pat Graham of Keokuk, one niece, Alexa Vinson of Keokuk and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

     He is preceded in death by Dallas.

     There will be no services.

Ruth Elinor Heston

1927-2022

     Ruth Elinor Heston, 94 of Keokuk, IA passed away on Monday, June 20, 2022 at River Hills Village.

     She was born on September 13, 1927 in Centerville, IA the daughter of Alfred O. and Amanda Gustafva Carlson Burkland.

      The family moved to Keokuk in 1932.  She graduated from Keokuk High School with the class of 1945.

     Ruth was united in marriage to Loren Gene Heston on November 4, 1948 in the First Christian Church in Roodhouse, IL.  They were united in marriage by Reverend W.W. Williams, uncle of the groom.  They were married for sixty-five years.

     She had been employed by Northwestern Bell Telephone Company for fifteen years until Keokuk went dial.  She later worked at Keokuk Ferro Sil as a switchboard operator and receptionist for twenty-eight years, until her retirement in 1989.

     Ruth was a lifelong member of First Lutheran Church and a member of the Naomi Circle.  She taught Sunday School and Confirmation classes for many years and also served as Altar Guild Directress for a number of years. 

     Ruth Elinor is survived by her son, Mark Eugene Heston and loving daughter-in-law, Marie Ann of Keokuk.  Additional survivors include a grandson, Brandon Michael Heston and twin great-grandsons, Dayton Allen and Dakota James Heston.  She is also survived by a nephew, Bill Heston of Wheatland, MO and nieces, Lisa Bode and her husband, Darren of Keokuk, Linda Anderson and her husband, Rog of Greensboro, GA and Jan Stocks of Indio, CA.  Also surviving are special second cousins, John Anderson of Santa Fe, New Mexico, David Louis and Ilene Merrick of Brookside, CO, Mrs. Ray (Jackie) Hoy of Toledo, OH and her sister, Mrs. Geoff (Linda) Anderson of Hammond, IN and one brother, Rick (Becky) Burkland of Udell, IA.

     She was preceded in death by her husband, Loren on November 1, 2013.  She was also preceded in death by her parents and numerous extended family members.

     A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, IA with Pastor Rodney Underwood officiating.  Burial will be in the Keokuk National Cemetery.

     Visitation will be held prior to the service from 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m., Monday at the funeral home with family meeting with friends at that time.

Judith “Judi” Ann Nagel, 59, of Warsaw, passed away on Friday, June 17, 2022, at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa.

Judi was born on September 12, 1962, in Circleville, Ohio, the daughter of George and Helen (Fausnaugh) Adkins. She graduated from Woodruff High School in Peoria in 1981. On August 11, 1989, she was united in marriage to Rick Nagel in Keokuk, Iowa. He survives. 

Judi was employed in several positions over the course of her career, and held employment as a bank teller, a school secretary in Hamilton and a cashier at HyVee in Keokuk. She enjoyed spending her free time gardening her plants or spending time in the water, whether it be a hot tub, pool or the ocean. She also loved dogs. When she was pregnant, Judi was a member of an online group called “September Mommies” and stayed in contact with those women throughout the rest of her life.

Judi is survived by her husband Rick Nagel of Warsaw; her son Nicholas Nagel of Hamilton, Illinois; three sisters: Cheryl (Donald) Pedroza of Peoria, Illinois, Brenda (Dave) Veres of Florida and Georgia (Steven) Reinholdt of Peoria; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Judi is preceded in death by her parents and her sister Pamela.

A graveside service at Oakland Cemetery in Warsaw will be held at a later date.

Walton “Wally” E. Wetzel

1929-2022

     Walton “Wally” E. Wetzel, 92 of Quincy, IL formerly of Keokuk, IA died Friday, June 10, 2022 at his home.

     He was born August 5, 1929 in West Point, IL the son of Albert W. and Harriet Fae Hopson Wetzel.  He graduated from Carthage High School in Carthage, IL with the Class of 1947. 

     Wally was a veteran of the United States Army and proudly served during the Korean War.

     On December 26, 1950 Wally was united in marriage to Patricia Morrill in Keokuk.  She preceded him in death on January 6, 2021.

     Wally had been employed by Central Illinois Public Service Company for forty-three years until his retirement in 1991.

     Wally was a member of the Macomb Masonic Blue Lodge, Springfield Consistory, the Quincy Elks Lodge and First Christian Church in Keokuk. 

     Wally enjoyed spending time outdoors fishing and tending to his garden.  He loved to go dancing and coin collecting.  Wally was generous with his time and talents and was a former volunteer at the Keokuk Area Hospital and was a driver for “Road to Recovery”.

     He is survived by one sister, Wanda Harnetiaux of Carthage, IL and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

     He was also preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, Cecil and Lulu Wetzel and Alex and Lessie Hopson as well as aunts and uncles.

     A joint graveside service will be held for Wally and his wife Pat at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, June 22, 2022. Wally will be honored with military rites at the Keokuk National Cemetery in Keokuk, IA with Pastor Bill Mitchell officiating.

James “Jim” P. Houston, 73, of Kahoka died Monday, June 13, 2022 at Hannibal Regional Medical Center in Hannibal, MO.

He was born on March 17, 1949 in Keokuk, IA the son of Tillman Houston and Treasure Penrod Waltman. Jim graduated from Clark County High School with the Class of 1967.

On September 21, 1996, Jim was united in marriage to Dianna Sue Byrn Spory in the backyard of their home. She survives.

He is also survived by one daughter, Michelle Coppler (Jody) from Keokuk, one son, James Michael Houston (Ruby) of Keokuk, three step-children, Heather Spory of Kahoka, Dena Plant (Chris) of Gallatin, MO and Charles Spory (Kumiko) of Japan, eleven grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, one great-grandchild, three sisters and two brothers.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one great-granddaughter, brothers, sisters, a special aunt and uncle, nieces and nephews.

Jim was employed by Shannon’s scrap yard in Keokuk for sixteen years. He was then the co-owner of River City Metals Products in Keokuk for twenty years and retired from Gregory Containers in Kahoka in September of 2018. He was a member of Kahoka Christian Church.

He enjoyed motorcycles, hot rods, stock cars and go carts anything with a motor. Jim liked being in the outdoors especially taking care of his yard and flowers. He had an incredible green thumb and was proud of his lilies.  Hunting and fishing was a favorite pastime of his. Jim will be missed by those who loved him.

A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at the Vigen Memorial Home in Kahoka.  Burial will be in the Kahoka Cemetery.

Visitation will be held after 1 p.m. Friday with the family meeting with friends from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Sharon Jean Schafer, 82 years old, of Sutter, Illinois, daughter to Herbert and Elsie (Wollbrink) Koehler, has gone to be with the Lord on Monday, June 13, 2022, in her home. 

She was born October 22, 1939, in Keokuk, Iowa.  Survived by her husband, Robert Schafer, daughters Penny Schafer and Gena Dewald and family (husband Duane, Kortney, Ismael, and Gracie Gutierrez, Jordan, Phillip, and Allison (Fiancé Robert), son Troy Schafer and family (wife Michelle, daughters, Rochelle (daughter Jordan), Holly (daughter Zoey), Drew Bullard, Katielyn, and Benjamin Schafer).  Those who will carry on her legacy and stories include sisters Patricia McMillen, and Nadine (Willard) Savage, her friends and cousins including too many to note, and numerous nieces and nephews who also have their families.  

Sharon is preceded in death by her parents, her brother-in-law Weldon McMillen, her niece Robin McMillen and her nephew Robert Savage. 

Sharon’s passion for music became prevalent in the 8th grade.  Beginning in the 8th grade, she served as the organist at Bethlehem United Church of Christ for approximately 65 plus years.  While her memory continued to be impacted by the aging process, she could frequently be heard singing hymns joyously on Sunday mornings.  

Sharon was a graduate of Warsaw High School in 1957.  She went on to serve as the organist at Bethlehem United Church of Christ and for numerous weddings, funerals, and band competition accompanist for over 65 years. She was also a teacher of the piano and organ, including the Bethlehem United Church of Christ organists today Marilee Jacquot and Jennifer Smith.  She frequently spoke fondly of her employment with the Hill Dodge Banking Company.  She left the Bank shortly after Robert and she began to build their family.  

Sharon had many hobbies and interests. She was a dedicated wife and mother, and always took care of her family. She worked in the garden and on the farm with her husband, often riding with him and providing home-cooked meals. Some of her favorite hobbies included all kinds of dancing, golfing and traveling, especially when the traveling included golfing. 

Funeral services will be held at noon on Friday, June 17, 2022, at Bethlehem United Church of Christ in Sutter, Illinois, with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church from 10 am until noon directly before the service.

Barbara Briggs

1950 – 2022       

    Barbara Anne Briggs, 72, of Keokuk, IA, died Saturday, June 11, 2022 at her home.

     She was born on January 31, 1950 in Keokuk, IA, the daughter of Delbert Eston and Janet (Egley) Haage.  Barbara graduated from Keokuk Senior High with the Class of 1968.

     She was of the Baptist faith.

     She enjoyed playing bingo and watching classic TV shows.  Her most favorite show was “Days of Our Lives” and everyone know she was not to be interrupted when her show was on.  Barbara’s greatest joy in life was spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

     Barbara is survived by two sons, Johnnie Smith of Burlington, IA, and Brett Briggs (Tara) of Wayland, MO, one daughter, Kimberly Strunk of Dallas City, IL, seven grandchildren, Paige and Natalie Smith, Clarissa and Justine Strunk, Angelina Lox (Justin),  Blake Briggs and C.J. Overhulser and five great-grandchildren, Royalty, Khalani, Aubrey Piles, Emmalyn Korn and Mark Lox.  She is also survived by her mother, Janet Haage of Keokuk, one brother, Ed Haage of Keokuk, one sister, Peggy Tweedy (Walter) of Montrose and several nieces and nephews.

     She was preceded in death by her father, one son, B.J. Briggs, one son-in-law, Brian Strunk and one daughter-in-law, Rebecca Briggs.

Kyle Frederic Hoskins Hubbard, 44, of Keokuk, passed away Saturday, June 11, 2022, at Blessing Hospital in Quincy.

Kyle was born August 4, 1977, in Keokuk, Iowa, the son of Theresa Hoskins Hubbard Phillips and James Wilson Hubbard.  Kyle enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing.  He also liked rock and roll music and his motorcycles.  Kyle was very involved in Native American Culture and had attained the rank of Eagle Scout, one of several in his family.

Kyle is survived by his wife, Wendy Hubbard of Keokuk; his mother, Theresa Hoskins Hubbard Phillips of Keokuk; step-children, Brandon Hutton of Keokuk and Stacie Mason of Keokuk; four grandchildren; his step father, Rick Phillips of Keokuk; two brothers, James (Tiffany) Hubbard and Perry Hubbard of West Point, Illinois; and two sisters, Nancy (Justin) Rampley of West Point and Rikkea (Zachary) Wood of Keokuk.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Harvey C. and Theresa Ann Hoskins and Wilson Blythe and Marian Hubbard.

Scott Michael Scheetz, 64, of Hamilton, IL, passed away Wednesday, June 8, 2022 at 4:26 AM  at The Somers Hospice House in Sebring, Florida. Scott was born September 3, 1957, the son of Leroy and Wanda (Neff) Scheetz in Carthage, Illinois.  On June 6, 1981, he was united in marriage to Tracy Lynn Evans at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Carthage, Illinois.  Scott was a life long farmer and a graduate of Southeastern Community College with a degree in auto mechanics. He enjoyed cars and airplanes having built his own Sonex 1139 experimental aircraft.  Scott was a member of The Experimental Aircraft Association, a certified pilot and flight instructor, Carthage Lions Club, a past member of the Carthage Memorial Hospital Board, and enjoyed wintering in Florida for many years.  

Scott is survived by one sister, Vicki (Jim) Hardy and one brother, Rex (Susan) Scheetz of Carthage.  He is also survived by four nieces and nephews: Brooke Flesner, Alan Scheetz, Michelle Reynolds and Taylor Hardy and many great nieces and nephews.

He was proceeded in death by his wife, Tracy and his parents.

1939-2022

     James Hobbs, 82 of Keokuk, IA died Tuesday, June 7, 2022 at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City, IA.

     He was born October 22, 1939 in Keokuk, IA.

     On February 12, 2017 James was united in marriage to Leann Washburn in Keokuk.  She survives.

      He was a member of God’s Way Christian Center in Keokuk.

     James had been employed as a small engine repairman and had also worked at Meyers Plumbing.  

    Other survivors include three sons, Elmer Hobbs, Robert Hobbs and Jimmie Hobbs all of Keokuk, one daughter, Tina Gooley of Keokuk, several other children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and brothers and sisters.

     He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Rosalie Hobbs and one brother, Stanley Hobbs.

     Services will be held at a later date.

Marileen L. Brown, 93, of Quincy, Illinois formerly of Basco, IL, passed away at 1:34 AM, Wednesday, June 8, 2022, at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Illinois.

Marileen was born in Harmony Township December 20, 1928, the daughter of Tjark and Minnie (Garrelts) Huls. In 1929, she was baptized at Immanuel Lutheran Church and was confirmed in the Lutheran faith in April 1944, where she remained a member for the rest of her life. Marileen attended Excelsior school in rural Basco and graduated from Carthage High School in 1946. On October 24, 1947, she was united in marriage to Ira Brown in Keokuk, Iowa. Marileen worked as a secretary at the Farm Bureau Office in Carthage after graduation until her marriage. She then worked as a decorator for 40 years with her good friend and partner Marilyn Cameron in their business, M & M Interiors.

Marileen was a member of R.S.V.P.,a volunteer group at the hospital, the Red Hat Society, and helped the activity group at her church. She loved to play cards and belonged to a Pitch and Pinochle Club.

Marileen is survived by her son, James (Ramona) Brown of Carthage, Illinois, a daughter, Linda Shuman of Hamilton, Illinois; grandchildren, Tricia (Ted) Logan of Bloomington, Illinois   Lance (Stephanie) Brown of Tampa, Florida, Julie (David) Collins of Old Town, Florida,  and Amber (Craig) Horner of Keokuk, Iowa; sister-n-law Nancy Huls, eight great grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Marileen was preceded by her parents; her husband, Ira; a daughter, Judy Brown; her sisters, Erma Franzen and Betty Barnett; her brothers, Virgil Huls and Larry Huls; brother-in-laws, Dale Barnett, Richard Wachendorf and Dean Franzen; a sister-in-law, Minnie Huls; and a son-in-law, Harold Shuman.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 11, 2022, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in rural Basco at 11:00 AM with burial to follow in Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 9:00 AM until the time of service. Memorials may be directed to Immanuel Lutheran Church or the Illinois Veterans Home in Quincy. Donnie “Don” Lee Clift

1939-2022

     Donnie “Don” Lee Clift, 82, of Kahoka died Friday, June 3, 2022 at his home in Kahoka.  

     He was born December 2, 1939 in Alexandria, MO the son of John and Helen Oberman Clift.     

     Don graduated from Kahoka High School with the Class of 1957.  He joined the Iowa Army National Guard in 1961 and proudly served for six years.    

     On November 17, 1962 he was united in marriage to Rosalie Raymond at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Keokuk, IA.  They were married for 59 years.  She survives.  

     He is also survived by four daughters, Sherry Koonce of Ste. Genevieve, MO, Kathy Randolph and her husband Kipp of Donnellson, IA, Debbie Malone and her husband Kirt of Palmyra, MO, and Cindy Kumm and her husband Jake of Palmyra, MO, six grandchildren, Kevin Randolph and his wife Ashley, Kyle Randolph, Brock Malone, Kaden Malone, Bennett Lee Kumm and Brayleigh Kumm, two step great-grandchildren, Vayda Nichols and Kenley Nichols, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Ken Raymond of Quincy, IL, Phyllis Hodges and her husband Larry of Quincy, IL, and Karen Raymond of Orange Park, FL, as well as nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives.   

     He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, James Arthur Clift, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Harold J. Raymond and his wife Linda, Marilyn Griggs and her husband Albert, Ron Raymond, and aunts and uncles.   

     Don was of the Methodist faith and attended St. Michael's Catholic Church with his wife.  He was a member of the Frazee Cemetery Board for many years.  

     Don was a lifelong farmer which he loved. His grandchildren looked forward to riding the tractor with him. Telling jokes and making people laugh was his specialty.  He wrote annual birthday poems for his wife and daughters which they treasured.  In his younger years he enjoyed fishing, hunting, square dancing, and playing volleyball. Don was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather. He especially loved the time he spent with his family and friends.      

     A Mass of Christian burial will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 10 at St. Michael Catholic Church in Kahoka with Father Rob Fields officiating. Burial will be in the Frazee Cemetery.     

    Visitation will be held after 1 p.m. Thursday, June 9 at the Vigen Memorial Home in Kahoka with the family meeting with friends from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. A wake service will be held at 5 p.m.  

     Memorials are suggested to Frazee Cemetery or Donor’s Choice.

James Wesley “Wes” Walton, 87, of Carthage, passed away at 8:35 AM Saturday, June 4, 2022,
at his home.

Wes was born July 8, 1934, the son of James Frederick and Irene (Fosdyck) Walton in Augusta,
Illinois. He attended Augusta Community High School graduating in 1952. He was united in
marriage to Doris Leora Mulch on August 30, 1968, at the First Baptist Church in Carthage. Wes
had worked for Desert Star Printing in Desert Hot Springs, California and then operated Journal
Printing in Carthage for 25 years and also worked for Biddy’s Press. Wes enjoyed golf and
bowling and bowled two 300 games. He enjoyed baseball games and especially the St. Louis
Cardinals. He loved music and was lead guitar for the “Four Hits” band for many years. He was
a member of the First Christian Church (DOC).

Wes is survived by his wife, Doris Walton, of Carthage; children, Craig James (Jerri) Walton of
Heber Springs, Arkansas, Claris Ann (Randy) Biddenstadt of Carthage and Michael Rich (Jason)
Novak-Walton of Keokuk; daughter-in-law, Kay Smith of Hoffman Estates; grandchildren, Terah
(Casey) Fletcher, Tyshia Walton, James Daniel Walton, Ryan Dale Biddenstadt, Megan Ann
(Jason) Lamporte and Alexis Paige (Evan) Foster; great grandchildren, Aiden Walton, Cullen
Walton, Gracie Brewer-Walton, Justice Grice, Alysa Grice, J.C. Tompsett, Tyler Fletcher, Quinton
Foster, Dallas Lamporte, KayLynn Bucy and baby Lamporte on the way; one sister, Wilma (Don)
Markley of California.

He was preceded by his parents; son, Greg Smith; a daughter, Pam Midlane; and siblings,
Robert and Thomas Walton, Ellen Cassel, Betty Green and Charles “Sci” Walton.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 8, 2022, at the First Christian Church (DOC) in
Carthage at 11:00 AM with burial to follow in Moss Ridge Cemetery. Visitation will be held
from 2:00 – 8:00 P.M. Tuesday evening at Printy Funeral Home in Carthage with family meeting
friends from 4:00 – 8:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the First Christian
Church (DOC) in Carthage or Lee County Hospice. Printy Funeral Home of Carthage is in charge

Marion Elizabeth “Maribeth” Jefferson, 97, of Carthage, passed away at the Southeast Regional Medical Center in Fort Madison.

Maribeth was born July 24, 1924, in Fountain Green, Illinois the daughter of William Marion and Hazel Ellen (Brooks) Rawson.  She graduated from Colchester High School and then went on to one year of business college at Gem City College in Quincy.  Maribeth was a long-time member of St. Mary’s Baptist Church in St. Mary, Illinois.  She was also active in R.S.V.P. and the American Red Cross and had served on the rationing board during WWII.  Maribeth was united in marriage to John “Irvin” Jefferson at the Argyle Church on June 16, 1944.   Irvin passed away in 1991 in Carthage.

Maribeth is survived by her children, William Thomas “Tom” (Mavis) Jefferson of Carthage, Alice Lee (Jim) Wildemann of Golden, Colorado, James Irvin “Jim” (Pam) Jefferson of Carthage, Robert Fay “Bob” (Jeanne) Jefferson of Carthage, Elizabeth Ann Miller of Dallas City, Joe Dean (Rita) Jefferson of Plymouth, Jane Ellen (Robert) Menn of Plymouth and John Hugh (Kris) Jefferson of Augusta; 22 Grandchildren, 42 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Irvin; one granddaughter, Melody Wainwright; a great granddaughter, Maya Griswold; a brother, William “Bill” Rawson who was a fighter pilot killed in action in WWII; and a sister, Clydelle Dixon.

Ronald Lynn “Sharky” Shark

1950-2022

     Ronald Lynn “Sharky” Shark, 71 of Keokuk, IA died Wednesday, June 1, 2022 at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, IL.

     He was born September 2, 1950 in Keokuk, IA the son of Robert Lee and Anne Burke Shark.  Sharky graduated from Central Lee High School in Donnellson, IA with the class of 1968.

     Sharky was a member of the Church of the Nazarene in Keokuk.

     He had been employed by several area businesses through the years, including Tri State Dairy, the Bonaparte Republic Newspaper, Raid Quarries, Southeastern Community College, Freuhauf, Siemens and Keokuk Area Hospital.  Ron also mowed over two hundred lawns each year and was the owner and operator of Sharky’s Machine Ice Cream Truck.

    Sharky loved motorcycles and especially enjoyed going for motorcycle rides.  He had a generous heart who gave unselfishly to many children’s benefits in the community and was an inspiration to everyone that knew him.

     He is survived by one son, Travis Shark and fiancé Sara of Elgin, TX, three step-daughters, Missy, Diana and Kelly all of Texas, three sisters, Tina Reid of Keokuk, Bonita Roberts (Jerry) of Keokuk and Connie McNeill (Jeff) of Hamilton, IL, many nieces and nephews, including his namesake, Rhonda Lynn Carel.

     He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, Kelly Anne Shark, his grandparents, one brother-in-law, Larry Reid, his pet dove, “Dennis” and his pet potbelly pig, “Grunt”.

     A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, at Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, IA with Pastor Dana Jurgens officiating.  Following the service, a time of food and fellowship will be held at the Keokuk Labor Temple.

     Visitation will be held after 1:00 p.m., Sunday, at the funeral home with family meeting with friends from 3:00-7:00 p.m.

     In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established in his name.

Lorry Jean Galbreath

1958-2022

     Lorry Jean Galbreath, 63 of Springfield, IL formerly of Keokuk passed away peacefully after her battle with lung cancer on Friday, May 27, 2022 at her home.

     Lorry was born July 27, 1958 in Keokuk, IA the daughter of John and Frances Dawson Galbreath.  Lorry graduated from Keokuk High School with the class of 1976, where she was an avid softball player.  She played many years with the Keokuk Superstars. 

     Lorry loved music and played the drums, often playing in groups and participating in the Battle of the Drums.  Lorry loved to travel and explore the world and was fearless wherever her journey would take her, always ready for a new challenge.  Lorry enjoyed being around family and friends and continuously shared her comedy and laughter with all.  She always left an inspirational, loving impact on all she came in contact with.  Lorry would spend endless hours with her faithful companion, her dog, Prince G.  If you saw Lorry, you saw Prince G.

     Lorry is survived by three sisters, Marita Palmer of Round Rock, TX, Loretta Mapunda of Davenport, IA and Renita Galbreath Hill of Keokuk, one brother, Broc Galbreath (Shannon) of Marion, IA and her dog, Prince G.  She is also survived by two aunts, Marline Dawson Malcom of Ft. Madison, IA and Alberta Dawson Robinson of Donnellson, IA, three special godchildren, Shaila, Shekia and Tyesha Sams all of California, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins, special friends, Theresa Jones, who was a sister and best friend to Lorry since seventh grade and Lonny Vance, Kathie Anderson Noel and Peggy Scott.

     She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, William Fred Galbreath.

     A memorial service will be held on June 23, 2022 at 11:00 a.m., at New Bethel Church, 1217 Morgan St., Keokuk, IA with Pastor Debra Letcher officiating.

     There will be no visitation.

Janeen A. Massey, 51, of Hamilton, passed away on Tuesday, May 31, 2022, at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Illinois.

Janeen was born on November 23, 1970, in Keokuk, Iowa, the daughter of Joe E. and Mary (Stutz) Massey. She was employed in healthcare throughout the area, working at. River Hills Village, Keokuk Area Hospital and in home healthcare. She was a member of Faith Assembly of God in Hamilton and the Warsaw Library Bridge Club. She also volunteered with voting assistance during elections and occasionally played Bingo and visited the casino. Janeen enjoyed spending her free time browsing yard sales and solving puzzles, crosswords and word searches. Her life was centered around her faith, and she was actively involved in her church’s women’s ministry. Janeen will always be remembered for her love for her family and friends.

Janeen is survived by two sisters: Jennifer Massey of Warsaw, Illinois, and Janice (Mike) McColm of Alexandria, Missouri.

Janeen is preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral services will be held at noon on Monday, June 6, 2022, at Printy Funeral Home in Warsaw, with burial to follow at Oakland Cemetery in Warsaw. Visitation will be held at Printy Funeral Home in Warsaw on Monday from 10 am to noon directly before the service.

Peggy Stutenberg

1947-2022

     Peggy Ann Stutenberg, 75, of Keokuk, IA died Sunday, May 22, 2022 at the Donnellson Health Center in Donnellson, IA.

      She was born on February 17, 1947 in Keokuk, IA the daughter of Murlen Horace and Louise Benlehr Schlotter Stutenberg.  Peggy graduated from Keokuk High School and Southeastern Community College.

     Peggy had been employed at Foil Graphic in Keokuk for thirteen years.

     She was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ in Keokuk.  She was also a member of Keosippi Kickers, T.T.T. (Tri-T) and PEO.

     Peggy is survived by many cousins including Julia Schlotter Fanney of Fleming Island, FL, Mark (Barb) Schlotter and Doug (Linda) Foulkes all of Missouri, Jamie (Michelle) Poindexter of Westport, WI and Mark (Mary Jo) Stutenberg of Le Claire, IA.

     She was preceded in death by her parents.

     A graveside service will be held on June 14 at 10:30 a.m. in the Oakland Cemetery in Keokuk with Reverend Milo Van Veldhuizen officiating.
