Leanne (Rea) Derks

Our beautiful wife and mother Leanne Derks passed peacefully surrounded by her loving family on July 6, 2023, in Anchorage, Alaska. Leanne was born Margret Leanne Rea on July 23, 1940, in Rock Creek Township, Hancock County, Ill., to Dee and Helen (Brandon) Rea. She graduated from Nauvoo High School in 1958, and on April 28, 1961, married Jim Derks, the love of her life. In 1966, with three children at home and a new one on the way, Jim asked Leanne what she thought about moving to Alaska, she replied, “That sounds like fun.” So, in July 1967, now with four young children in tow, Jim and Leanne packed up their Chevy van and drove 3,600 miles away from the life they knew to start their new life in Alaska, telling family and friends they would probably be gone a year. Seventeen and 19 years later, and still in Alaska, Leanne and Jim welcomed two new boys into the family and started parenting anew. Leanne was an endlessly patient and loving mother, grandmother and greatgrandmother, dedicated wife and friend, and someone who always put the needs of others above her own. She will be remembered fondly by former students and co-workers at Chinook and Willow Crest Elementaries where she worked for many years as school secretary. In her younger days, Leanne was often involved in competitive sports including softball and volleyball, and many will remember her fiercely competitive spirit. She had many hobbies through the years including being a skilled painter and seamstress. Leanne also enjoyed many outdoor adventures across Alaska and spending time at the family’s cabin in Cooper Landing. She was an amazing cook who loved spending time in her kitchen preparing delicious treats for family and friends and was always the last to sit and eat herself. She was also an active and devoted member of the First Christian Church of Anchorage. Leanne wished nothing more than to be near her beloved family, so in their retirement years, she and Jim spent much of their time traveling to see family. Along the way they enjoyed collecting antiques, of which Leanne was particularly fond of vintage linens, cookbooks and glassware. Leanne is survived by her loving husband, Jim, of 62 years; six children, Lisa, Teresa (Vic), Jim Jr. (Jean), Jenny (Greg), Todd (Jennifer) and Travis (Jen); grandchildren, Zane, Cooper, Erika, Elias, Charity, Jason, Chelsea, Abby, Paxson, Danika, Royce, Sage, Ira and Jack; great-grandchildren, Kayden, Ryder, Michael and Jamie; sister, Carolyn McMillen of Fort Madison, Iowa; as well as an abundance of close family friends. She is preceded in death by her parents; eight brothers, Willy, Jack, Mel, John, Newt, Glen, Donnie and Jim; two sisters,Betty and Norma; grandson, Chad; and son-in-law, Greg Curtis. A celebration of life is scheduled for 3 p.m., on Friday, July 21, 2023, at First Christian Church in Anchorage. All are welcometo attend and celebrate Leanne’s life. Simon John Bentzinger

Simon John Bentzinger, age 13, entered into the Kingdom of his Heavenly Father on Sunday, July 02, 2023, at his home in Sutter, Illinois, while holding the hands of his parents.  Simon was born on December 13, 2009, to Mark and Jaime (Lowman) Bentzinger of Sutter, Illinois.  Simon was a student at Nauvoo Jr. High School in Nauvoo, Illinois, and a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Warsaw, Illinois.

Simon fought a challenging battle with cancer for 3 ½ years before succumbing to his illness.  He often did this with a smile on his face and a quick-witted comment.  Even though Simon’s battle with cancer was never easy, he was beyond blessed.  He was sent to Seattle, Washington for a new treatment study, but was able to make the most of his time there (during his downtime from treatment) with his parents by looking for Sasquatch and placing his chewing gum on the Gum Wall.  Make a Wish Foundation gifted Simon an amazing “Game Room” equipped with everything a teenager could possibly want, including a mini-fridge.  Kelsie’s Hope Foundation granted Simon and his family a wonderful vacation to Disney World in Florida, where they stayed at the Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser.  A dear family friend, Travis Conover of Top Dogg Production, offered his Sound and Light Show at a “Just Because We Can” party so that Simon could see if he had any DJ skills.  His friends at Sts. Peter and Paul School in Nauvoo, Illinois not only prayed for him daily, but gave him a birthday party with a substantial gift card as a present.  They also dedicated the Living Rosary to him since he was considered “one of their own.”  Simon’s happy place was at home with his family, either swimming (since he was a fish in water) or eating anything flaming hot!  He loved collecting Pokémon cards, watching Star Wars and playing Play Nine.  Simon had a unique sense of humor, which would either leave you laughing, or shaking your head in disbelief.

He is survived by his parents of Sutter, Illinois and his brother, Logan Bentzinger (Fiancé Ashley Zimmerman) of Quincy, Illinois.  Grandparents:  Vickie Bentzinger of Warsaw, Illlinois; Kevin and Vickie Maag of Warsaw, Illinois.  Great Grandfather, Ron Maag of Warsaw, Illinois; Uncles:  Douglas (Jennifer) Bentzinger of Dunfermline, Illinois; Jordan (Megan) Maag of Wever, Iowa; Aunts:  Danielle (Andrew) Horras of Collinsville, Illinois; Stacie (Mike) Payne of Carthage, Illinois.  Cousins:  Adrienne (Grant) Murphy of Des Moines, Iowa; Kelsey and Isabella Bentzinger of Dunfermline, Illinois; Alexis (Alexander) Ruhe of Atlanta, Illinois; Addyson, Dayton and Dominic Horras, all of Collinsville, Illinois; Eric and Gunner Payne of Carthage, Illinois; and Ainsley, Briley and Chailey Maag, all of Wever, Iowa.  Simon is also survived by numerous Great Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, as well as his beloved Ramirez family of St. Joseph, Missouri, his very best friend, Jasper Harmon of Warsaw, Illinois, and his honorary brother Bryce Heiden of Quincy, Illinois.

Simon was preceded in death by his Grandfathers, Robert Bentzinger and James Lowman, as well as two cousins, Bryce and Issac Bentzinger.

Simon was a special kid who, during his short life, touched and inspired the lives of so many people.  The Bentzinger family would like to express their sincere gratitude to those who prayed continuously, called, brought meals, sent cards and gifts, sent Pokémon cards, and visited.  They are humbled by the number of people (from coast to coast) who regularly reached out in some form or another.  Thank you to their amazing Presbyterian Church family for all they did.  Thank you to St. Louis Children’s Hospital, whose team of Doctors and Nurses fought this fight with Simon, and to Blessing Hospice for being with Simon and his family until the end.

A memorial service will be held at 2 pm on Saturday, July 15, 2023, at Warsaw High School in Warsaw, Illinois. Visitation will be held on Saturday, July 15, 2023, at the school from 10 am to 2 pm directly before the service.

Memorials may be directed to the family in care of Mark Bentzinger for expenses and an established memorial.

Tributes and condolences may be left at www.printyfuneralhome.com.

Alice Dierker

In the early morning hours of Thursday, June 29, Alice Margaret (Wear) Dierker of Newport, NC passed from this life surrounded with all the grace, dignity and love that she had shown others throughout her whole life.

She was born Alice Margaret Wear in Carthage, IL on January 19, 1938, to Roberta Leota Render and Vernon Martin Wear. She had 8 siblings, Robert Edward “Bob”, William Donald “Bill”, Mary Eunice, Donna Sue, Frances Hope “Fran”, Roberta Katherine “Kay”, Alfred Louis “Bud”, and Vernon Martin “Vernie”.

She was a 1956 graduate of Carthage High School (now Illini West) and was a lifelong supporter of their sports teams having several nieces and nephews attend as well.

In 1964 while in California for training as a switchboard operator, she met the love of her life, a young US Marine Sergeant named Henry Allen “Hank” Dierker.  They married on September 11, 1964, in Downey, CA and she quickly took on the role of a Marine wife, living on and off military bases and being transferred to new and unfamiliar places every few years. Their first son Mark Allen was born in the family hometown of Carthage, IL in 1965 and later their second son Joseph Eugene was born in Memphis, TN in 1968. Alice kept up a family tradition of calling each son on their birthday each year at the exact time of their birth.

When Hank got ready to head off to Vietnam a few years later he handed Alice the checkbook and told her she was now in charge. She took that responsibility seriously and became the family accountant for the rest of their lives together. The family moved through several military assignments including Los Angeles, CA, Memphis, TN, Cherry Point, NC and Washington DC with Hank also taking assignments in Japan and Norway over the years. Through it all she remained in charge of the family.

At times when Hank had to be overseas for long periods or when she was in the hospital due to an ongoing heart condition, her extended family on both sides would step in to help out. As a result her sons never missed out on the benefit of positive role models and adult helpers through various stages of early life.

In 1987 when Hank retired from the Marine Corps as a Lieutenant Colonel after more than 30 years he asked her which had been the favorite of the duty stations where they had lived. She replied Cherry Point which is on the coast of North Carolina and so they built a house near the ocean outside Morehead City, NC where they have lived for the last 36 years.

Alice remained close with family and friends over the years, returning to her hometown often to visit brothers and sisters and help give care when they were ill. She particularly enjoyed reminiscing about their childhoods growing up and hearing about the lives of all the new nieces and nephews and their children as well. She shared in their happiness over births, graduations and marriages and also shared the grief over those lost too young.

With Hank she became a member of the Boy Scouting family in both the Washington DC area as well as the Eastern North Carolina area. She took great joy in helping out with events wherever she was needed, cooking, taking care of registrations and offering advice and counsel. In this way they positively touched the lives of thousands of boys and girls and stood as true role models.

Alice loved spending time with family and friends. Mark and Joe were spread out across the US but they always came home at Christmas except where the Covid years would not allow. She had a small network of good friends and neighbors including the “Silver Sneakers” a group of ladies who had all met at the gym and got together for lunch on a regular basis.

And she always had Hank whom she supported faithfully for nearly 59 years of marriage. They took the marriage vows seriously. “to have and to hold from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death do us part."

Their life together included all of those things. And in the end when she could no longer hold onto life, he was there by her side. Alice lived a life of grace, love and dignity. She shared those with everyone she met and she got them back in return.

She was a member of the Catholic faith and a member of several congregations including Holy Family Catholic Church in Dale City, VA., Annunciation Catholic Church in Havelock, NC and St. Egberts Catholic Church in Morehead City, NC.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Vernon Martin and Roberta Leota (Render) Wear, 3 brothers, Robert L., (Sela), William D., (Doris) and Vernon M., (Gail). And 3 sisters, Mary E., (Harlan Tobias), Donna S., (Leroy Strieker) and Frances H., (John Artman). She is survived by her husband Hank of Newport, NC, two sons Mark (Debra Sullivan) of Dubuque, IA, Joseph (Rhia Bucklin) of Seattle, WA,  her sister Kay (the late Frank Sumner) of Quincy, IL and her brother Bud Wear (Linda) of Carthage, IL and several nieces and nephews and their extended families.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Cherry Point Bay Nursing and Rehab Center for helping her regain her strength after a fall and serious infection earlier this year and especially the Emergency and Critical Care units of Carteret General Hospital who treated “Miss Alice” with the same care they would have given their own mother.

A funeral mass will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday, July 8th, 2023, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Carthage with burial to follow in Moss Ridge Cemetery in Carthage.  A visitation will be held from 4:00 – 7:00 PM Friday evening at Printy Funeral Home in Carthage.  A Rosary will be held at 7:00 PM following the visitation at the funeral home in Carthage.  In lieu of flowers please consider a donation in her name to Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Carthage, IL or the East Carolina Council BSA in Kinston, NC.  Printy Funeral Home of Carthage is in charge of arrangements.
