Richard Amherst Maynard

Richard Amherst Maynard, 91, of Carthage, passed away at the Montebello Care
Center in Hamilton at 12:25 A.M. Monday morning, April 27, 2020.
Richard was born October 24, 1928, the son of Kenneth and Margaret (Rich)
Maynard in LaHarpe, Illinois. He graduated from Carthage High School in 1946
and went on the Western Illinois University, Bradley University and the University
of Oklahoma where he received his B.A. in Architecture. He served in the U.S.
Army from 1954 until his Honorable Discharge in 1956. He was a member of the
American Legion and the Carthage Presbyterian Church.
Richard is survived by one sister, Sandra Thompson of Ault, Colorado and six
nieces and nephews; Andy Maynard, Anne Dickerson, Marilyn Feigl, Ken Maynard,
Mike Thompson, and Joe Maynard.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and his wife; Robert and
Geraldine Maynard, a brother-in-law; Tom Thompson, and a nephew; Peter
Thompson.
Private family services will be held at Printy Funeral Home in Carthage with burial
to follow in the Keokuk National Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to
Carthage Presbyterian Church. Printy Funeral Home of Carthage is in charge of
arrangements.

Margaret Marie Frank

Margaret Marie Frank, 103, of Warsaw, passed away on Friday, April 24, 2020, at her home in Warsaw. 

Margaret was born on February 3, 1917, in Warsaw, Illinois, the daughter of Robert F. and Katherine M. (Wiesemann) McMahan. On January 7, 1939, she was united in marriage to R. Wendell Frank at the Concordia Lutheran Church parsonage in Warsaw. He preceded her in death in 1989.

A lifelong resident of Warsaw and member of Concordia Lutheran Church, Margaret faithfully served her church with the Lutheran Ladies AID. She was baptized on May 20, 1917, by Reverend H.W. Rabe and was confirmed on April 13, 1930, by Reverend Rehahn. She graduated from Warsaw High School in 1934, and worked during her teenage years at the Katz Club on South 4th Street. After high school she worked as a caretaker for a blind woman. She was also employed in the Osgood Factory office for many years and later worked as a secretary at Carthage College. She finished her working career at Hill Dodge Banking Co., where she retired after twenty years. Wendell and Marge were die-hard Chicago Cubs fans, and would spend six weeks a year in Mesa, Arizona, at the Chicago Cubs Spring Training Camp. She followed all of her grandchildren’s sports, especially basketball. Margaret was a sweet and loving person who lived for her family. When asked for the secret to a long life, she would always respond, “Clean living, three square meals a day, and being strong in your faith.”

Margaret is survived by her daughter Martha Ann (Les) Beeler of Warsaw; four grandchildren: L. Lance Beeler of Morris, Illinois, Michael M. Beeler of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Robert Wendell (Jessie) Frank, III of Blandinsville, Illinois, and Christina K. (Billie) Bavery of Manhattan, Illinois; five great-grandchildren: Kate, Will and Ryan Beeler and Katherine and Madeline Bavery; four nieces and two nephews.

Margaret is preceded in death by her husband Wendell (1989), her son Robert “Busher” (2019), her daughter Susie (1979), her brother Robert K. McMahan (1999), and her parents.

A private family graveside service will be held on Monday, April 27, 2020, at Oakland Cemetery in Warsaw, Illinois.

Betty Kathryn (Herzog) Thompson

Betty Kathryn (Herzog) Thompson, 77, of Niota, IL passed away April 23, 2020 at her home after recurring battle with cancer.

Born March 10, 1943 in Quincy, IL the daughter of Ernest and Mildred (Thurnhoffer) Herzog of Sutter, IL.  On December 8, 1963 at the Appanoose Faith Presbyterian Church she married the love of her life W. Lee Thompson.

Survivors include one sister, Jan (Dale) Corrigan of Elkland, Missouri; one sister-in-law, Letha Howell of Luray, Missouri; three sons, Curt (Becky) Thompson of Niota, Illinois, Bryan (friend Jana Kirchner) Thompson of Argyle, Iowa and Andy (Kristi) Thompson of Carthage, Illinois; one daughter, Brenda (Jeff) Forquer of Williamstown, Missouri; grandchildren, Michael Thomes of Burlington, Iowa, Candi (James) Youngblood of Marshalltown, Iowa, Joel (fiancé Cassie Carter) of Burlington, Iowa, Aaron (Marisa) Thompson of China Grove, North Carolina, Abby (Andy) Menke of West Point, Iowa, Brad Forquer and Kelsey Forquer both of Williamstown, Missouri, Kate Thompson and Addison Thompson both of Carthage, Illinois. Also surviving are two great grandsons, Jeremiah Wilcox of Marshalltown, Iowa and Greg Menke of West Point, Iowa.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Lee; her parents; brother, Leo Herzog; sister, Eileen Smith; two brothers-in-law; two sisters-in-law and two nieces.

Betty started grade school in Buckeye one-room school house and later in Tioga two-room school house before graduating from Warsaw High School in 1961.  Betty was employed at Schaeffer Pen, Niota Elevator, Independent Can Company, and Gleason Corporation.  Betty and her husband owned and operated Thompson Agri-Service for over 20 years in Niota and Basco, Illinois.  Betty enjoyed camping including Western Illinois Threshers where her and her husband owned the pony powered threshing machine for 34 year and the Clark County Mule Festival where they owned the sled and organized the mule pulls.  She was a member of and enjoyed camping and flea marketing at the Argyle Gas Engine Association as well as enjoyed camping at the Tri-State Rodeo.  Betty was a member of Appanoose Faith Presbyterian Church.  Betty and Lee loved and enjoyed their family and extra special was their 11 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  Betty and Lee met while in high school at the Sutter Square Dance Hall and were married for 54 years.  After retiring in 2008 Betty and Lee spent their remaining years on their farm in rural Niota.

In accordance with the current CDC guidelines, a private family graveside service will be held at the Appanoose Cemetery, Niota, with David Poland officiating. A memorial service will be held at a later date. A memorial fund has been established in her memory. Connie Marie Wollbrink

Connie Marie Wollbrink, 62, of Carthage Illinois went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus, after a courageous battle with cancer. She passed on Saturday afternoon, April 18, 2020 at 1:35 P.M. at her home in Carthage surrounded by her family. Connie was born August 25, 1957, in Carthage, Illinois, the daughter of Laverne and Gloria (Bishop) Brewster. She graduated from Northwestern High School in Sciota, Illinois, class of 1975. She attended Gem City Beauty School after high school. On June 1, 1985, she was united in marriage to Galen Wollbrink at the Bethlehem United Church of Christ in Sutter, Illinois. Connie was formerly a member of the First Baptist Church in Carthage and has been an active member of Madison Park Christian Church in Quincy for many years. She had worked at Methode Electronics in Carthage for over 30 years. She was a Cub Scout leader as her sons were growing up. Her gentle spirit and hospitality made their home a favorite place for their friends over the years. She most recently was the owner and operator of Wollbrink Alley in Carthage and met many friends through her store where she did alterations and sewing. Connie loved spending time with her family and especially her “guys.” Her grandchild had become her whole world and hearing the sounds of their feet running and their joyful voices when they came to stay at “Nana’s house” was music to her ears. She was loved by many and will be greatly missed. 

Connie is survived by her husband, Galen, of Carthage, Illinois; two sons, Arron (Amanda) Wollbrink of Quincy, and Ryan Wollbrink of Hamilton; two grandchildren, Nash and Theo Wollbrink of Quincy; her mother, Gloria Brewster, of Carthage; two sisters, Nancy (Steve) Goetz of Carthage, and Kathy Nudds of Nashville, Tennessee; three brothers, Rusty Brewster of The Villages, Florida, Rob Brewster of Plainfield, Indianapolis and Ronnie Brewster of Jacksonville, Florida. She is also survived by nieces, nephews and cousins. 

She was preceded in death by her father, Laverne Brewster.

Dennis Michael White

Dennis Michael White

1955 – 2020

 

     Dennis Michael White, 65, of Keokuk, died Saturday, April 18, 2020 at his home.

    He was born on March 5, 1955 in Keokuk, IA, the son of Jerry and Norma Carter White.  He graduated from Kahoka High school with the Class of 1974.

     Dennis was a veteran of the United States Navy and served his country during the Vietnam War.

     On June 16, 1979, he married the love of his life, Linda Lasley in Alexandria, MO.  She survives.

     He is also survived by three daughters, Christina White Koltzenburg (Cliff) of Warsaw, IL, Katherine Johnson of Wichita Falls, TX and Cimberly White-Leever (Chad) of Platte Center, NE, his grandchildren, Jonathon White (Erin), Lindsay Watkins (Bob), Jordan White (Danielle), Noah White Koltzenburg, Krista Bates (George), Juwan Johnson (Taylor), Dylan White-Leever (Brittany) and Nathan White-Leever (Brittany), great-grandchildren, Sophia, Braeden, Nathanael, Gracie, Hadassah, Baylor, Adam, Jackson, Lilee, Isaiah, Evalyn, Taleah, Henley, Ruxin and Brynlee.  He is also survived by his mother, Norma Jobe (Walter) of Keokuk, and two sisters, Debbie Thompson (Johnny) of Keokuk and Terry Snyder (Glen) of Buffalo, MN.

     He was preceded in death by his father, twin great-grandsons, Mason and Micah, and two brothers, Craig and Jeffrey White.

     Dennis had been employed at Roquette in Keokuk for twenty years, retiring in 2017.

     He enjoyed going hunting and fishing with his grandkids and brother-in-law.  He also enjoyed playing Euchre and relaxing in his recliner. He especially enjoyed his wife’s wonderful cooking.   Dennis was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and his greatest joy was spending time with his family.

      Due to the current COVID-19 situation and the restriction for public gatherings, a Celebration of Dennis’ life will be held at a later date

Lawrence L. Smith

Lawrence L. Smith

Lawrence L. Smith, 81, of rural LaHarpe, Illinois passed away Wednesday, April 16, 2020 at 11:15 a.m.

Lawrence was born on November 9, 1938 in Hull, Illinois the son of Homer C. and Dora E. Morris Smith. On June 7, 1959 he married Mary Ann Finch at the Terre Haute United Methodist Church. She survives.

Lawrence was a 1958 graduate of the former Terre Haute Illinois High School. He farmed all of his life. He enjoyed hunting, watching sports, especially Illini basketball, the St. Louis Cardinals, and his grandchildren’s sporting events. In his earlier years, he enjoyed stock car racing and horse racing.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Ann; two sons, Larry (Trish) Smith and Gary (Becky) Smith all of LaHarpe; four grandchildren, Josh (Melinda) Smith, William (Karen) Smith, Tanner (Macy) Smith and Erin (Josh) Wear; fourteen great-grandchildren, one brother, Carl (Patricia) Smith of Macomb, Illinois, his aunt, Lucille Morris of Clarksville, Missouri and two sisters-in-law, Tanna Rhodes and Lenora Smith.

Lawrence was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Homer and Melvin Smith and one sister, Donetta Whalen.

Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, a private graveside service will be held Monday, April 20, 2020 at the Terre Haute Cemetery with Rev. Lee Unger officiating. Dorothea Derry

Dorothea Derry, 90, of Carthage, passed away at 12:15 P.M. Wednesday afternoon, April 15, 2020, at the Heritage House in Carthage. 

Dorothea was born December 14, 1929, in Carthage, Illinois, the daughter of Harry and Silvia (Dobbs) David. On March 26, 1949 she was united in marriage to Robert H. “Choc” Derry at the First Baptist Church in Carthage. He preceded her in death November 17, 2011. Dorothea was a member of the First Baptist Church, in Carthage. 

She worked at Carthage Sale Barn for 30 plus years and farmed with her husband Robert.  Dorothea was also known as; “The best pie maker in Hancock County.” She enjoyed making all types of pies for the local community.

Dorothea is survived by her son, David Derry (Shelly) of Avon, Indiana; Granddaughter, Megan  Smith (Brandon) of Avon, Indiana; Great Grandchildren, McKenzie and Carter Smith of Avon, Indiana; and her brother, Donald David of Carthage.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; parents; sister, Vera Gillenwater, brother, Harold David; and Grandson; Matthew Derry.

Jay Frank Cook

Jay Frank Cook, 67, of Keokuk, IA died Monday, April 13, 2020 at his home.

     Jay was born on September 3, 1952 to Frank and Marcia (Weber) Cook.  He graduated from Keokuk High School in 1971.  

     On December 22, 1973 he married Drucilla A. Ricker in Keokuk.    

     Jay had worked at Midwest Carbide and Pinnacle Foods.

     He was a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Keokuk Lodge #106.

     Jay enjoyed life and loved to have a good time.  Doug Nickel and Mark Gates were his lifelong friends.  Jay was the first bowler at the Arrowhead Bowl to have a perfect 300 game.  Besides bowling he enjoyed playing Euchre, watching the St. Louis Cardinals and the Iowa Hawkeyes, collecting baseball cards and spending time with his family.  Jay always had a positive look on life and took every moment to enjoy it

     Jay is survived by his wife, Dru, his greatest joys, his son Ryan (Margaret) Cook, his daughter Cara (Brad) Johnson and his grandchildren Jake Cook, Megan Cook, Rylee Johnson and Jaelyn Johnson all of Keokuk. He is also survived by his sister Cindy Hoewing and daughter Gretchen, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Denice (Mike) Samuels, Dawn (Jeff) Marlin, Penny (Craig) Williams, and Patrick Ricker along with several nephews, nieces, aunts, and uncles.

     He was proceeded in death by his father, mother, and sister-in-law, Diana Hester.

       Due to the current COVID-19 situation and the restriction for public gatherings, a Celebration of Jay’s life will be held at a later date at The Elks Lodge BPOE #106 . 

     Memorials may be made to the Iowa Chapter of the ALS Association or to Lee County Hospice.

Shirley Antoinette Worrell

Shirley Antoinette Worrell

1935 - 2020


 

     Shirley Antoinette Worrell, 84, of Keokuk, IA died Saturday, April 11, 2020 at her home.

    She was born on May 7, 1935 in Keokuk, the daughter of Tony and Emma Fickel Shaffer.  She graduated from Keokuk High School with the Class of 1953.

     On January 20, 1962, Shirley was united in marriage to James Vernon Worrell in Memphis, MO.  He preceded her in death on February 8, 2017.

    Throughout her life Shirley had been employed at various retail stores in Keokuk including Denholm’s IGA and also at Drydens in her earlier years.

    Shirley faithfully attended Cornerstone Church in Keokuk and the Cowboy Country Church in Wayland, MO.  She had always been active in church activities and Bible Studies. For years she had been in charge of all wedding receptions at Trinity United Methodist Church in Keokuk and then all the dinners during her time at New Testament Christian Church in Keokuk.  She and her husband Jim shared the love of Christ through a cross ministry. They made wooden cross necklaces out of cedar and gave them away. 

      Shirley loved to square dance and was a member of the Circle Square B Promenaders Square Dance Club.  She also loved to embroider and embroidered many quilt blocks to be quilted. Shirley had the gift of hospitality and enjoyed hosting and celebrating with friends and family at her home.  She was always on the go, taking care of people and visiting local nursing home with her special friend, Rick, to hear him sing. Most of all, Shirley loved spending time with her children and grandchildren and especially her new great-grandson.

     She is survived by her very special friend, Rick Crabtree of Keokuk, one son, Rickie Haage of Keokuk, one daughter, Trinette Winn (Mike) of Keokuk, two stepchildren, Penny Oakes (Wes) of Grand Junction, CO and Wes Worrell (Stephanie) of Boise, ID, two grandsons, Michael Winn and Colton Winn (Cami), six step-grandchildren, Nikki Oakes, Crystal Selders (Kyle), Audry Worrell, Christian Worrell, Chad Worrell (Sara) and Travis Worrell (Tashia), one great-grandson, Caidon Winn and several step-great-grandchildren.

     Besides her husband she was also preceded in death by her parents, one step-son, Rex Worrell and one step-grandson, Tommy Oakes.

     Due to the current COVID-19 situation and the restriction for public gatherings, a private family funeral service will be held with Pastor Jed Linebaugh officiating.  The service will be live-streamed at 10:30 am Tuesday and may be viewed at that time on the Vigen Memorial Home Facebook page, the Vigen Memorial Home web page or Trinette Winn’s Facebook page.

     There will be no visitation.

     Memorials may be made to Cornerstone or the Cowboy Country church.

Jeanne Marie "Johnnie" Matlock

Jeanne Marie “Johnnie” Matlock, 65, of Carthage, passed away at 9:00 A.M.
Friday morning, April 10, 2020, at Memorial Hospital in Carthage.
Jeanne was born July 17, 1954, in New Orleans, Louisiana, the daughter of John
Curtis and Ann Mae (Barthel) Trammel, Sr. She graduated from Waverly High
School and went on to receive her Associate’s Degree from Carl Sandburg College.
On March 16, 1973, she was united in marriage to Don Lynn Matlock. He
survives.
Jeanne is survived by her husband, Don, of Carthage; two children, Dawn Michelle
Matlock Jones of Burlington, Kentucky and Wesley Charles Matlock of Strasburg,
Colorado; and three grandchildren, Tre’ Alexander Jones, My Kayla Nicole Matlock
and Grayce Marie Matlock.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. Printy Funeral Home of Carthage
is in charge of arrangements.

Marvin "Dale" Richardson

Marvin “Dale” Richardson

1942-2020

 

     Marvin “Dale” Richardson, 77, of Hamilton passed away Thursday, April 9, 2020 at the Montebello Healthcare Center in Hamilton, IL.

     He was born June 15, 1942 in Ida Grove, IA the son of Marvin and Beatrice Richardson. On March 24, 1963 he was united in marriage to Sally Lee Mason in Burlington. She survives.

     He is also survived by his son, Brad (Jennifer) Richardson of Carthage, five grandchildren, Mya (Grant) Hellenthal, Macy, Wren, Harper and Brilynn Richardson and a cousin, Jim (Pat) Meier of Burlington.

     He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother in infancy and a son, Brian Richardson.

     Dale worked as an accountant and computer programmer at Burlington Bank and Trust in Burlington, Iowa Ammunition Plant in Middletown, Morse Rubber and Atmos Energy in Keokuk.  Dale and Sally’s married life took them from West Burlington to Danville then to Hamilton, IL. In 1992, Dale was transferred to Olathe, Kansas where he also worked for Atmos Energy.  Six years later he transferred to Tennessee. In 1995, Dale took early retirement and moved back to Hamilton to be closer to family and friends. 

    After moving back to Hamilton, Dale took a job at Danville Telephone in Danville, IA where he worked for ten years before he retired.

     Dale was on the Hamilton City Council for thirty years and a member of the Hamilton United Methodist Church where he was an adult Sunday school teacher. 

     Dale enjoyed watching football especially the Iowa Hawkeyes, and Kansas City Chiefs.  He loved watching golf and basketball. He also enjoyed reading the newspaper especially the Daily Gate City where his son Brian worked.  He had a great love of computers. He also enjoyed bird watching and listening to music with his favorite song being “Dust in the Wind.”

       Due to the current COVID-19 situation and the restriction for public gatherings there will be no public services or visitation at this time.     

     A Celebration of Dale’s life for family and friends will be held at a later date.

Marjorie E. Harrell

Marjorie E. Harrell, 89, of Carthage, passed at Thursday morning, April 9, 2020, at 4:10 A. M. at the Maple Grove Care Center in Carthage.

 

Marjorie E. (Anderson) Harrell was born November 20, 1930, the daughter of Saul and Minnie (Engstrom) Anderson in Moline, Illinois.  She graduated from Orion High School in 1948 and went on to graduate from Augustana College in Rock Island in 1952 with her Bachelor’s degree and then received her Master’s Degree in Education from Western Illinois University in 1969.  Marjorie taught in several high schools including Rock Island, Carthage, Abingdon, Mount Morris and Hamilton High Schools. On February 14, 1959, she was united in marriage to Lawrence Harrell in Andover, Illinois.

 

Marjorie was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church for 60 years joining in 1959.  She had served on the Trinity Lutheran Church Council and Finance Committee. She had also served as a Sunday School Teacher, Vacation Bible School teacher as well as other positions.  She was a member of Hancock County Republican Women, Carthage American Legion Auxiliary, Carthage Women’s Club, Hancock County Historical Society and the Western Illinois Reading Council.  She served on Memorial Hospital and Hancock County Nursing Home Boards for 18 years and held several offices.

 

Marjorie enjoyed her grandchildren and liked to attend their activities.  She enjoyed traveling, reading, and playing bridge.  

 

Marjorie is survived by her husband, Lawrence, of Carthage; two sons, Steven Harrell of Fishers, Indiana and David (Denise) Harrell of Carthage; four grandchildren, Christopher (Alicia), Catherine, Jon (McKenna) and Morgan Harrell; and a sister, Phyllis (George) Harrell of Stronghurst.  She is also survived by nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.


 

Private family funeral services will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church in Carthage with burial to follow in Moss Ridge Cemetery.  Memorials may be directed to the Trinity Lutheran Church Endowment Fund or the Memorial Hospital Foundation Fund.

Donna S. Eaves

Donna S. Eaves

Donna S. Eaves, 82, of Fountain Green, Illinois passed away Wednesday, April 8, 2020 at 5:12 p.m. at her home.

Donna was born on October 8, 1937 in Fort Madison, Iowa, the daughter of George and Florence (Anderson) Adams. On May 4, 1956 she married Guy Eaves in Fort Madison.

Donna was a graduate of Fort Madison High School  and worked at various jobs throughout her life, including IAAP, as a CNA at The Elms in Macomb, Methode in Carthage and for Carl Sandburg College, retiring after 25 years. She enjoyed crocheting, mowing, working in her flower garden and watching hummingbirds. Donna especially loved her family.

Survivors include her companion, Guy;  one daughter, Jeanette Poulson of Fountain Green; two sons, Steve (Lana) Eaves and David Eaves all of Fountain Green; three grandchildren, Amber (Chris) Eaves, Brittany (Shannon) Poulson and Kenlee Eaves; seven great-grandchildren, John, Anthony, Ryan, Addy, Keegan, Lukas and Maxwell; one sister, Betty (James) Bindewald of Blandinsville; two nieces; one nephew and two special friends, Kimberly Burford and Jeff (Sandy) Hainline. Also  surviving is her beloved dog, Ellie Mae.

Donna was preceded in death by her parents and one granddaughter, Ashley Lorain Eaves.

Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic a private graveside service will be held at McConnell Cemetery, near Fountain Green with Rev. Bruce Goettsche officiating. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established for the MDH Hospice or Hancock County Animal Shelter. Dale Wayne Johnson

Dale Wayne Johnson, 56, of Dallas City, Illinois passed away Monday, April 6, 2020 at 6:25 PM at his home.

Mr. Johnson was born on February 5, 1964 in St. Louis, Missouri the son of Albert and Jesse (Welch) Johnson.

Dale enjoyed having parties his friends and family. He also enjoyed spending as much time as he could outdoors; fishing and canoeing.

Survivors include his mother, Jesse Johnson of Morning Sun, Iowa; three daughters; Jessica Johnson of Long Beach, California, Jennifer Johnson of St. Louis, Missouri and Rosita Johnson of St. Beach, Missouri; one son, Jacob Johnson of Texas; six grandchildren, Ejden and Liam Huscinovic, Adrian Cortez, Diego and Alex Rivis and Chi Edwards; one sister, Betty (Jim) Ruble; three brothers, Larry (Michele) Johnson, Lester (Tery) Johnson and Roy Johnson.

He was preceded in death by his father; one sister, Alberta Pittman and one nephew, Jerry Pittman.

Marshall Allan "Mark" Courtois

Marshall Allan “Mark” Courtois, Jr., 52, of Elvaston, passed away at his home Saturday, April 4, 2020.

 

Mark was born July 25, 1967, the son of Marshall Allan and Shirley (Dickson) Courtois, Sr. in Jacksonville, Arkansas.  He served in the U.S. Army receiving his Honorable discharge in 1989. On May 25, 1996 he was united in marriage to Tammy Martin in Elvaston.  She survives. Mark worked at the Nauvoo Cheese Factory from 1989 until it’s closing in 2003. He enjoyed donating to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.

 

Mark is survived by his wife, Tammy, of Elvaston; a daughter, Elisha Mercedes Courtois of Ferris; his mother, Shirley Courtois of Keokuk, Iowa; and a brother, William (Chrissey) Courtois of Adrian.

 

He is preceded in death by his father; and a sister, Angelina.

 

Private family services will be held at Printy Funeral Home with burial in the Elvaston Cemetery.  Memorials by be directed to the family of Mark Courtois. Printy Funeral Home of Carthage is in charge of arrangements.

Maxine Tomblin

Maxine Tomblin, 97, of Warsaw, passed away on Sunday, April 5, 2020, at Montebello Healthcare Center in Hamilton. 

Maxine was born on February 3, 1923, in rural Warsaw, the daughter of Truman and Opal (Gooding) Grimes. On December 24, 1947, she was united in marriage to Leland Robert “Tom” Tomblin at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Warsaw. He preceded her in death in 1992. 

Maxine was a proud resident of Warsaw and a member of Trinity United Methodist Church for many years, where she faithfully served in the Methodist Women, taught Sunday school, and worked in the nursery. She was a meticulous housekeeper, and her home was always immaculate. She enjoyed gardening and planting flowers, and hated weeds springing up in them. Maxine was a beloved babysitter, taking care of countless Warsaw children throughout the years, many of whom stayed in touch with her. In her younger years, Maxine enjoyed spending her free time dancing, and in later years, enjoyed playing Bingo with her friends.

Maxine is survived by her niece Donna (Steve) Winters of Augusta, Illinois; her special cousin Teresa (Kenny) Culpepper of Warsaw; three great-nieces and nephews: Jenna (Chris) Lilly of Augusta, Illinois, Jason (Jessica) Winters of Jacksonville, Illinois, Jaci (Brandon Cornell) Winters of Quincy, Illinois, and three great-great nieces and nephews: Kendra and Carter Lilly of Augusta and Dawson Winters of Jacksonville.

Maxine is preceded in death by her parents and her sister Willa Fern Ruffcorn.

A private graveside will be held at Oakwood Cemetery in Warsaw.

Jan Lee Sorensen

Jan Lee Sorensen, 79, of Hamilton, passed away at 9:05 P.M. Friday April 3, 2020 at Memorial Hospital in Carthage.

Born December 13, 1940 in Monmouth, Illinois the son of Lee and Eva (Howard) Sorensen.

October 31, 1970 in Nauvoo, Illinois he married Rosalyn Scott.

Survivors include his wife Rosalyn, brother-in-law David Leininger of Nauvoo. Also surviving are two cousins Tom Sorensen and Marge Winebright.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Jan attended Monmouth High School and was a United States Marine Corp. Veteran.

He worked most of his life in construction, building bridges in Illinois and Indiana. He was project manager of a hospital, dental clinic and tank ranges in Germany, Underground Bunker Fortifications in Saudi Arabia and the clean up of Super Fund Sites in the Chicago area. After retirement Jan did inspecting of hurricane cleanup for the Army Corp of Engineers and finally working on the Border Wall in Texas. Jan loved cats especially his German cat “Dinker.”

His body has been entrusted to Schmitz-Banks & Beals Funeral Home for cremation. No services are planned at this time.

Richard "Dick" Housewright

Richard “Dick” Housewright, 80, of Burlington, IA passed away at 9:34am Sunday, April 5, 2020 at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington, IA.
He was born April 30, 1939 in Burnside, IL, the son of M.O. and Madge Dunn Housewright. On July 12, 1959 he married Judy Quivey in LaHarpe, IL. She preceded him in death on July 14, 2016.
Dick lived in LaHarpe for many years, moving to Florida 35 years ago. While living in LaHarpe he worked in his family’s business, Housewright Soil Service. In Florida he worked as a commercial fisherman and as a teacher’s aid, retiring 2 years ago. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Shriners.
He is survived by one daughter, Kelly (Dennis Ertz) Gustafson of Burlington, IA, one grandson, Jeremy (Millie) Berlet of Seattle, WA, one brother, Don Housewright of Carthage, IL and one sister, Carolyn Wheelock of Quincy, IL.
He was preceded in death by his wife, an infant daughter, Kristen Lynn Housewright and his parents.
A private graveside service will be held at a later date in LaHarpe Cemetery with Rev. Bruce Goettsche officiating. A memorial fund has been established for the Great River Hospice House. Raymond Franklin Ellison

   Raymond Franklin Ellison, 82, of Carthage, IL, formerly of Dallas City, IL passed away at 1:07pm Friday, April 3, 2020 at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, IL.
    He was born May 21, 1937 in Adrian, IL, the son of Maurice and Frances (Noble) Ellison. On December 30, 1978 he married Laura Jane Lieurance Kaler in Dallas City. She preceded him in death on December 7, 2003.
    Raymond retired from Eugene Scanlan’s farm where he worked for many years. He loved farming. He also loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He enjoyed going out for biscuits and gravy with his brother, John Henry, going “to the Boat” and attending baseball and basketball games. Back in the day, he loved to shoot pool and play cards. Raymond was a small man with a huge heart.
    He is survived by 4 children, several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, three sisters, Jean Winters of Oregon, Nancy Tedrow of Muscatine, IA and Stella Lester of Branson, MO, three brothers, John Henry Ellison of Dallas City, Tom Ellison of Fort Madison, IA and Donald Dale Ellison of Macomb, IL and several nieces and nephews.
    He was preceded in death by his wife, Janie, four children, five brothers, Harold Lloyd, William, Richard, Wayne and Laurence Ellison and three sisters, Mary Ann, Ruth and Leota.
    In accordance with the current CDC guidelines, a private family graveside service will be held at the Harris Cemetery near Dallas City with Pastor Maxine Dennison officiating. Loraine Hopson

Loraine Hopson, 65, of Warsaw, formerly of Hamilton, passed away on Friday, April 3, 2020, at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Illinois.

Loraine was born on March 16, 1955, at Memorial Hospital in Carthage, Illinois, the daughter of C. Dale and Evelyn W. (Gunn) Markey. She married Bryant Schafer on April 12, 1980, and later married Brian K. Hopson on April 22, 1988. 

Loraine worked as a legal secretary for forty-six years. She graduated from Gem City College in 1974, with a legal secretary diploma. In 1974, Loraine began working for the Anderson & McMurray Law Office in Keokuk. From March of 1980 to December 31, 1995, she worked at Dickey, Smith & Kultala in Keokuk, later Dickey, Smith Kultala and McDonald. On January 1, 1996, Loraine helped establish McDonald Law Office in Keokuk, with Bruce McDonald. During her time at McDonald Law Office, Loraine assisted in the investigation and prosecution of major felony cases, in conjunction with Bruce’s duties with the Lee County Attorney’s Office. She was instrumental in assisting the county attorney and local law enforcement agencies, including her significant contributions to the successful prosecutions of ten first degree murder cases. Her mastery of grammar, spelling, punctuation, and usage were a marvel to her “law partner”, himself an English major. Loraine was known for her devotion to her work and the citizens of Lee County.

When she was not working, Loraine could be found riding her bike around town, spending time at the South Side Boat Club or the Keokuk Yacht Club, or babysitting her grandchildren, nieces and nephews, whom she loved dearly. Family meant everything to Loraine. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Carthage, and showed off her singing and dancing talents in the Kardiac Kapers performances in Keokuk. She was a classically beautiful lady, and will always be remembered for her smile and friendship.

Loraine is survived by two sons: Chad (Morgan) Schafer of Port Orange, Florida, and Luke (Robin Gassaway) Hopson of Warsaw; her significant other of thirteen years, Harold “Harry” Marcionetti of Quincy, Illinois; four grandchildren: Gracie and Lola Schafer , Charlotte Hopson and Roland Bouchard; and six siblings: Stephen (Julia) Markey of Tioga, Illinois, Richard Markey of Quincy, Colette (Steve) Swisegood of Hamilton; Russell (Joan) Markey of Warsaw, Candace (James) Kleemeyer of Lima, Illinois, and Tracy (Lorinda) Markey of Tennessee, Illinois. Other survivors include numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Loraine was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Edward.

A private family graveside service will be held on Monday, April 6, 2020, at Calvary Cemetery in Carthage, Illinois.

Charles William Stoneking

Charles William Stoneking, 81, of Warsaw, passed away on Thursday, April 2, 2020, at Unity Point Health in Keokuk.

Charles was born on November 23, 1938, in Keokuk, Iowa, the son of Levi Thomas and Lora Elizabeth (Mensendick) Stoneking. He graduated from Warsaw High School in 1956, and on December 6, 1959, he was united in marriage to Doris Elaine Schafer. She survives. 

Charles farmed for over 60 years in Sutter, starting his registered Black Angus cattle herd at this time. He loved his cattle and farming life. He was an avid Cardinal baseball and Chicago Bears fan and loved watching live Harness Horse Racing in the summer, both in person and on TV. Charles was an excellent football player in high school, and played as a starter for four years, being honored as an All State Player for three of them. He loved to playing baseball and softball, and played catcher for excellent area pitchers, including Gerald Johnson of Basco, Jim Feming and Ed Roberts of Bowen, Weldon McMillen of Sutter and Warsaw. He also played for the Hubinger Team. 

Charles was a charter member of the Deer Run Golf Course in Hamilton, and helped construct the Warsaw sports track at the school, where he served as president of the Warsaw Sports Boosters. He coached many young athletes over the years and served as a 4-H leader. Charles was also a member of Bethlehem United Church of Christ in Sutter, and attended Parkview Bible Church in Hamilton.

Charles is survived by his wife Doris Stoneking of Warsaw; his daughter Kathryn Louise (Joe) Stoneking Thompson of Warsaw; his son Timothy Blaine (Maureen) of Sutter; and five grandchildren: Kristin (Travis) McAllister of Warsaw, Kayla (Clay) Quimby of Warsaw, Richard Thompson of Des Moines, Iowa, Ashley (Brandon) Harrison of Quincy, and Hayley (Friend Drake Murphy) Stoneking of Lenea, Kansas; six great-grandchilren: Ava McAllister, Evie McAllister, Jude Thompson, Fletcher Quimby, Fuller Quimby and Finley Harrison. Other survivors include many cousins, relatives and friends.

A family graveside service will be held on Monday, April 6, 2020.

Juanita Treadwell

Juanita Treadwell, 92, of Hamilton, passed away on Wednesday, April 1, 2020, in Hamilton, Illinois. 

Juanita was born on June 15, 1927, in Marshall, Arkansas, the daughter of Robert E. and Della Mae (Young) Ragland. On December 7, 1946, she was united in marriage to Garland P. Treadwell in Marshall, Arkansas. He preceded her in death on July 28, 1988. 

Juanita was a devoted mother and homemaker, who spent her time raising her children, canning, embroidering and reading. She was a member of Keokuk Church of Christ, where she attended faithfully. In her free time, Juanita loved music, dancing and yodeling.

Juanita is survived by four children: Danny (Janet) Treadwell of Hamilton, Connie (Larry) Dighton of Carthage, Kathy (Tom) Farris of Hamilton, Ann (Tracy) Longenecker of Warsaw; eleven grandchildren: Jari Dighton of Hamilton, Jeffrey Dighton of Carthage, Misty (Troy) Forquer of Hamilton, Trent (Kim) Longnecker of Galesburg, Illinois, Stephanie (Stu) Froman of Warsaw, Robert Garland (Dr. Courtney) of Ankeny, Iowa, Evan (Summer Day) Treadwell of Keokuk, Iowa, Kassi Rogers of Keokuk, Daniel (Nicci) Treadwell of Winfield, Iowa, Francie (Paul) Tyson of Quincy, Illinois, and Curt Sutton of Liberty, Illinois; her sister Carol (Junior) Busby of Marshall, Arkansas; her sister-in-law Virginia Ragland of Marshall, Arkansas; and many beloved great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Juanita is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Garland, her sons Garland Scott Treadwell and Robert Hugh Treadwell, her sister Doris, her brother Leonard and two grandchildren: Clinton and Kent.

A private graveside service will be held.

Jack Bartlett

Jack Richford Bartlett, 77, of Durham, Illinois passed away Wednesday, April 1, 2020 at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington, Iowa.

Jack was born on October 28, 1942 at the Fort Madison Community Hospital the son of Gerald and Frances (Shrier) Bartlett. On November 10, 1963 he married Sue Walker. She survives.

Jack loved his friends and family, especially his two great-grandchildren. Jack worked as a farmer since he was 12 years old. Farming was the only thing he ever wanted to do. He enjoyed his cars and boat. He was proud of being the 1970 National Points Champion in Tractor Pulling. He was currently serving as President of the Durham Cemetery Board.

Survivors include his wife, Sue; one son: Todd (fiancé Ashley) Bartlett of rural Dallas City; two grandchildren: Shelber (Jesse) Palmer and Trey Bartlett and two great-grandchildren: Jensen and Jade Palmer.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
