Sara Lee Shaffer

Sara Lee Shaffer

1939-2024

The beautiful soul of Sara Lee Shaffer left this earth on Tuesday, September 24, 2024, to be with her forever partner, Bill, in the great beyond. The “Mavin of 302 High and 903 Boulevard”, Keokuk died quietly at her home, with family attending, after battling kidney and heart disease at the age of 85.

Sara was born in Keokuk, Iowa, April 3, 1939 to Sarah Lorene and James Edward Daggs. She was the second child, and eldest daughter, of a large, loving, and raucous family. Her parents had seven children and lived in a small house over on William Street, next to Rees Park.

Sara and her siblings were raised in the Nazarene church, and at her mother’s insistence they attended sometimes 2-3 times a week, despite brother Jimmy’s complaining. As the eldest daughter, Sara was often corralling the other children, trying to keep them in line, swinging a broom at them as needed. It was happy childhood, despite Jimmy and Sammy terrifying Sara and her sister Garnet in the outhouse late at night.

Sara attended Lincoln grade school and Keokuk Jr. and Sr. High, graduating in 1957. She was a good student and loved singing in the choir at school and at church, where she would sing duets with her mom. Sara worked for a brief time at Sheaffer Pen in Ft Madison. Sara met her forever love, William Glenn Shaffer, as a “third wheel” ride along where Bill invited her (not the other girl) to drive his new car. Sara and Bill married November 26, 1958 at the Nazarene Church in Keokuk.

Sara was an excellent homemaker and bowling partner with Bill, and later with great friends, at Arrowhead Bowl. They raised their two daughters – Lori Joan Shaffer and Lee Ann Shaffer Smith in Keokuk. When the girls had grown and “flown the coop” Sara and Bill often traveled to visit them in Colorado, New Jersey, and Missouri. Upon Bill’s retirement from Union Electric they enjoyed travels with the “California Uncles” (Bill’s brother and his partner, Don) on two cruises and a bus tour. Sara and Bill also scoured the Midwest for every known make, model, and color of Haeger pottery through the 90’s and 2000’s which resulted in one of the most comprehensive assortments of elegant vases, lamp bases, figurines, and ash trays in the mid-west. The collection still resides on the shelves, curio cabinets, and the basement of their home.

Sara loved spending time with her four grandchildren – Sarah Anne Goeke (Travis Marerro), Catharine Jayne Goeke-Munch (James Goeke-Munch), Austin William Smith, and Abigail Susanne Smith, which were all called interchangeably: “Booby” “Sugar”, “Sweet Girl”, or “My Best Person”. Sara enjoyed cooking with them or hanging out and sharing many stories of her past, and their present. She reveled in her two great-grandchildren – Luna Lee Cochenour, daughter of Abigail Smith, Burlington, IA, and Sarah Ivy Goeke-Munch, daughter of Cat and Jim Goeke-Munch, St. Louis, MO.

Sara was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Keokuk. She was endlessly friendly and “never knew a stranger”. She could make life-long friends on the plane ride to New Jersey. She was an unfailing peace maker and peace lover to her family and friends. She has a patent on the saying: “happy and gay, mostly gay” which translates as “hey, let’s just all get along, okay?” She really only wanted for everyone to get along and have fun. If there was a temporary rift somewhere – she could feel it – like “a disturbance in the force”. And her trademark exclamation “it’s delicious” (pronounced: dee – LEE -shus) should be sent into outer space as a welcoming beacon to all life in the universe.

She loved family gatherings at her home, or at siblings’ houses, or at local restaurants. She was a very good cook – but would never take credit for it. Her pork tenderloin (the Iowa way), potato soup, minute steaks, 7-layer salad, the “Robert Redford” desert, and the “Sara and Bill Unique Recipe for Carmel Corn” are all the stuff of family legend.

She loved big and completely. She is survived by her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren (above) and siblings and their spouses: James (Jimmy) and Betty Daggs, Samuel (Sammy) Daggs, and Sue Anne Lawson and Ron Lawson. As well as many nieces, nephews, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, in-laws, her sisters Joan Mae Daggs and Garnet Morris, her brother Carl E Daggs, sister-in-law Joan Daggs, two brothers in infancy, niece Candina Lawson, brothers-in-law Austin D Shaffer and Donald Pancrazio, and her one true love, Bill.

Sara made a quiet, but deep and lasting impact on those that knew her. Her bright eyes, rosy cheeks, shining smile, and deep laugh will be missed. The power of her steadfast love and acceptance will live on in her family and friends, making the world a happier place.

A celebration of life will be held 4 p.m., Monday, September 30 at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk with Pastor Jay Zetterlund officiating.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service with the family meeting with friends from 3 – 4 p.m. at the funeral home.

Daniel

Daniel “Dan” Gutting

1960-2024

Daniel “Dan” Gutting, 64 of Keokuk, IA passed away Saturday, September 21, 2024 at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City, IA.

Dan was born May 4, 1960, in Keokuk, IA, to Gene and Rachel Gutting. He grew up in Kahoka, MO. He was a rambunctious kid and loved playing baseball. Those knowing him growing up referred to him as Danny, Archie, or Arch. He said he always knew he was back home when he heard those names.

Dan lived a life full of hard work and fun. He graduated Clark County R-1 High School in 1978 and after working on the family farm for a bit, decided it was time to pursue his next love, radio. Dan attended college in Maryville obtaining a degree in broadcasting. After that Dan began his career working on air radio, utilizing his gifted deep voice. With his savvy intellect he eventually shifted over to the business side of broadcasting. Over his career he worked at many stations throughout the United States, often restructuring stations which he said was his favorite times. His favorite places where he lived and worked were Brownsville, TX, and Jacksonville, FL, where he ended up falling in love with the area and planted roots next to the beach for 30 years. While there he continued his successful career in radio even doing play by play for the Jacksonville Jaguars, which would forever remain his favorite football team. Eventually with his vast broadcasting talents and experience, Dan ended up switching directions once again and worked in TV in Jacksonville as well. His loves in Jacksonville, besides the Jaguars, were golfing with friends, hosting parties, and being out on the beach as much as possible.

Despite his career travels and dedication, Dan was devoted to his family. He always said regardless of the many miles between him and his sister Susan and brother John, they all knew he was there for them if they ever needed him. And he would be there in a second. His love for his nieces and nephews (Sarandon, Sierra, Colin, Killian, and Carissa) was vast. He would show pictures and brag on their accomplishments, share in their heartaches, and truly wear the uncle, and eventually great-uncle, title proudly. They gave him more joy than they could possibly know. After the loss of his father, Dan began returning to Kahoka each summer to assist his mother who would return from Arizona. There he got to revisit his love for the family farm. In 2020, he decided it was finally time to hang up his beach towel and return back home. He said being back home was the next adventure of his life.

While back home Dan enjoyed the family farm and once again got to see his favorite season, fall. Not having that in Florida he said he forgot just how beautiful it is. Once back home Dan also embarked on an adventure he didn’t have planned. He and his future wife Sarah were introduced through a blind date email by a mutual friend and neither one of them saw what was coming. The wonderful unexpected rest was history meant to happen. They officially became husband and wife on January 4, 2024. Dan was the most amazing husband. He gave everything he had to whatever he was doing and being a husband was no exception despite it happening later in life. It’s no surprise that Dan also excelled at becoming a father to Abbygail as their bond grew over the years. Dan and Sarah lived in Keokuk. Dan was very proud of their home and loved talking about the next home project to tackle. Dan and Sarah loved sitting out on their back patio and enjoyed just being there with each other. He was at his happiest when his house was filled with friends and family surrounded by an abundance of food that he would’ve spent hours smoking and cooking, happily. He was a phenomenal cook, loving to try any new recipe. Anyone having the pleasure of knowing Dan experienced his great sense of humor. He could make you laugh with just one sentence. Often he would tell stories of years of adventures with his lifelong college best friends Mark and Larry, reliving the fun each time. Every year the 3 fanatical St. Louis Cardinals fans would head to spring training to take in their love of team, and inevitably create new stories, some of which will forever remain between only them.

To say he will be missed is the biggest understatement that has ever been made. The world lost the best husband, father, brother, uncle, and friend that anyone could’ve ever been blessed to have. He was truly a good man. He was taken far too soon to which we will never understand why. Hearts will forever be broken.

A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Friday at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk with Pastor Derek Olsen officiating.

Visitation will be held prior to the service from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. with the family meeting with friends at that time.

Zeb was born on September 14, 1996, in Keokuk, Iowa, the son of Mark and Tammy (Plowman) Greer.

playing the bass guitar. At the age of ten, he started playing and never stopped. Later, he brought joy
and rhythm to the bands “Fate Revealed” and “Caught in the Crypt”.
Zeb’s guitar was a familiar sound with family, often playing for his nieces, nephews and his beloved son
Alaric. His infectious smile and warm personality meant he never met a stranger and always lit up any
room he entered. Whether engaging in a game of catch, baseball or video games, Zeb cherished being a
big kid at heart with the younger ones. His spirit will be dearly missed but fondly remembered by all who
knew him.
Zeb is survived by his parents Mark and Tammy Greer of Warsaw; his son Alaric Greer; three siblings:
Jackie (Travis) Conover of Keokuk, his brother Eric (Cindy) Greer of Niota, Illinois, and his sister Kara

Robin G. Carel

Robin G. Carel, 70, of Hamilton, Illinois, passed away on Friday, September 6, 2024, at
Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Illinois.
Up until the very end, Robin was still calling the shots. He fought a tough battle to stay
with us on earth, ultimately deciding in his own time that he was “ready to go to
heaven.” When he left this world, he was surrounded by those he loved most. Robin
truly lived a great life. While people have different perspectives of him, everyone would
agree that he was one of the toughest men they knew and would show up at a
moment’s notice for someone he cared about. He had a stoic, sometimes intimidating
presence that kept people guessing—that was just the way he liked it. He was a
prankster in that way.
Robin was an ultimate craftsman, a “jack of all trades.” From his love of mechanics and
restoring old cars to all things construction, his entrepreneurial spirit shone through. He
was ahead of his time, starting a solar heating company in the 1980s. Eventually, he
focused his skills on cabinetry and woodworking, opening Lake Cooper Mill Works in
1987. Over the years, all of his children, many of their friends, and even a couple of
grandkids worked there. Robin was well-known for his beautiful, high-quality cabinetry,
architectural millwork, and casework—a tradition continued by his son, Jessie.
Robin’s greatest pride was his family. He had a deep love and pride for his kids and
grandkids. Though sometimes quiet in the room, his favorite thing on earth was the
commotion of family around him. The energy and joy of family gatherings brought him
the greatest happiness.
As a lover of the outdoors, Robin spent many years with the Boy Scouts. He eventually
led Hamilton’s Troop 41 as Scoutmaster, fully immersing himself in taking the Troop on
camping trips, canoe trips, and hikes. He was a member of the Order of the Arrow, the
“National Honor Society” for Boy Scouts, achieving the rank of Shaman. He dedicated
countless hours to providing experienced leadership for local Scouts. The infamous
Order of the Arrow bonfire tradition was often carried on and enjoyed by many at the
Carel household.
Robin was also involved with several car clubs over the years, most recently with the
Balcony Watchers in Monmouth, Illinois. He loved car shows and began running
Hamilton’s Labor Day weekend show, Auto Fest. This year marked his 15th year
leading and organizing the show, and he managed to complete this task during his last
weeks, even from the hospital.
Robin taught many how to work with their hands and the value of hard work. He gave
friends jobs when they needed it, loved boating on the Mississippi, fishing, shooting his

gun collection, working in his yard, and talking about history—especially Native
American history. Holiday traditions were something he lived for, with Halloween being
his favorite, closely followed by Christmas Eve.
In his “retired” years, Robin enjoyed poking around the shop, checking in on how things
were running. He loved taking long drives with his partner in crime and long-time
girlfriend, Chris, along with their sweet puppies, Bailey and Pickles. They enjoyed
cruising to Grafton, Spoon River Drive, and Mark Twain Lake, to name a few. They also
loved visiting local festivals, flea markets, and antique shops. He had plans to start
camping and becoming a vendor of antique magazines.
Robin’s legacy is one of strength, love, and craftsmanship. He will be deeply missed by
all who knew him, but his spirit lives on in the many lives he touched, the traditions he
cherished, and the work he dedicated his life to. Though he is no longer with us, the
lessons he taught and the memories he created will remain with us forever.
Robin is preceded in death by his parents Raymond Gerald “Jerry” & Betty Carel; his
brother Louis “Louie” Carel and his sister, Holly Carel. Robin is survived by his ex-wife
of twenty-nine years Lisa Carel; his children: Hilary Carel, Jason (Becky) Carel, Breun
(Jeremy) Smeltser and Jessie (Mikayla) Carel; thirteen grandchildren; four great
grandchildren; his girlfriend Chris Neff; his sweet puppy Pickles; and many nieces and
nephews, as well as those he took under his wing along the way.
Visitation will be held from 10 am to 12:30 pm on Saturday, September 14, 2024, at
Printy Funeral Home, 917 Blondeau Street, Keokuk, Iowa. Funeral services will be held
at 12:30 pm on Saturday, September 14, 2024, at the funeral home. A car and bike
cruise in Robin’s memory will be held directly following the service, ending with a
reception at the Warsaw Brewery at 4:30 pm.

Nancy Carol Grace Miller Baugher

Nancy Carol Grace Miller Baugher

1936-2024

Nancy Carol Grace Miller Baugher, of Keokuk, IA, was born June 28, 1936, in Wayne County, IA, at home on the family farm to Grace Lillian Harl Miller and Calvin Dennis Miller. Following a brief illness, Nancy passed peacefully, surrounded by family at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, IL, on August 29, 2024. She was 88.

The telling and retelling of family stories turned to lore at family gatherings, brought joy and laughter to Nancy. This may be an obituary, but stories are the poetry of life and we want to share a poem of Nancy with you.

Nancy was born during the Great Depression and during the 1936 heat wave, one of the most severe in the modern history of North America. Nancy’s maternal grandmother often said, “It was 108 in the shade, and there weren’t no shade.” Nancy was born on the birthdays of her father, Calvin, and his father, Frank.

The humorous story of her two middle names went that her mother, Grace, wanted to name her Nancy Carol for the film star Nancy Carroll; her father, Calvin, wanted to name her Nancy Grace. Grace gave the doctor the name Nancy Carol, and Calvin snuck in the Grace.

She was raised on the family farm in Appanoose County, IA, which went for years without electricity or indoor plumbing. She attended a one-room schoolhouse where her mother was the teacher when she was in eighth grade. During that year, Nancy proudly represented the county and her mother at the Iowa State Spelling Bee.

The family moved to Fairfield, IA, when Nancy was in the ninth grade. She graduated from Fairfield High School where she was active in band, choir and theater. Staying in Fairfield to further her education, she earned her teaching certification at Parsons College where she met Charles “Chuck” Baugher. With certification in hand, Nancy left for the big city of Council Bluffs, IA, where she enjoyed teaching young minds.

The stunning Nancy returned to Fairfield and married her handsome Chuck on September 16, 1956; 68 years this month. While Chuck finished his degree at Parsons, she was an office clerk at Filco leading to a great deal on the young couples first washer & dryer.  The couple moved to Keokuk, the home of Chuck’s large, fun-loving family, in 1957. Later in life, she became fascinated by the Baugher genealogy and became an expert for the family.

Nancy was one of Keokuk’s first teachers in the federally funded Head Start program, created to help break the cycle of poverty. She was also a longtime substitute teacher in the Keokuk Community School District.

Despite an always busy schedule, Nancy used her time and energy in devotion to her many passions in service of others, and personal. Bridge Clubs where never even mostly about the cards, but the about the long-standing friendships with women who we hope read this and know how dear you and all the shared cheers & tears were to her.

Inspired by her mother’s sense of community and education, Nancy became active in PTA as a member and officer helping to bring sex education programs into the public schools. She also volunteered and held various positions in the Keokuk Area Hospital Auxiliary including President during the important merger of the two Keokuk hospitals.

When her children became active in sports and music, Nancy matched their love and enthusiasm with her involvement in many school booster clubs. She also matched their commitment on the courts, field and stage, with her time on hard bleachers, miles in the car, and joy in her heart.

Nancy coordinated many family camping trips which took her family from the Current River in the Missouri Ozarks, to national parks in the west, and the beaches of South Carolina, giving her Midwestern children a chance to see and play in the mountains, ocean and rivers far from home. Upon retirement, Nancy and Chuck took their dream cruise to Alaska including a train to Denali National Park and a close-up glacier helicopter flight, imprinting Nancy with vivid stories that just weeks ago she shared, eyes lit up, with family.

In 1975 Nancy started working at State Central Bank as a teller. Over the course of 25 years, she became head of the Data Processing Center and was involved in the bank’s implementation of automatic teller services. She ended her career in 2000 as Vice President of Software Technology shortly after helping the bank navigate the complex Y2K transition.

In retirement, Nancy spent many winters in Satellite Beach, FL, where she sipped her morning coffee while watching the sun rise over the Atlantic Ocean, walked the beach collecting shells, created unique jewelry, explored local festivals and entertainment, and toasted the end of the day with friends.

A member of Trinity United Methodist Church since 1957, Nancy sang in the choir, was a member of United Methodist Women and participated in many of the committees.

Nancy and Chuck were longtime Iowa Hawkeyes football season ticket holders and attended several bowl games. Every year she learned the stories of her favorite Iowa athletes and supported them like she did her own children.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Calvin and Grace Miller; her son, Matthew Charles Baugher; her sister Mary Ann Miller Marley and brother-in-law Ed Marley; and sisters- and brothers-in-law: Genevieve Baugher Staggs Neff and James Neff, Chester and Katie Baugher, Carrie Baugher Wittekiend and Woodrow Wittekiend, Velma Baugher Lovell and Merle Lovell, Marjorie Baugher Sherrill and Ernie Sherrill, and Martha Baugher Kirchner and Leroy Kirchner.

In addition to her husband, Charles Baugher, she is survived by her sister Jan Miller Hickenbottom; daughter Cynthia Baugher Wine and son-in-law Steven Wine, daughter Cassandra Baugher, daughter Ellen Baugher Day and son-in-law Robert Day, and daughter-in-law Lisa Rosenboom Baugher; five grandchildren: Rebecca Baugher Wood (Micah), Jacob Baugher (Haley), James Baugher, Grace Day and Erin Day; and many nieces and nephews.

The family will meet with friends at 10 a.m., Thursday, September 5, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 2330 Plank Road, Keokuk, IA, with a service immediately following at 11 a.m. A luncheon will follow in the church fellowship hall.
