Shirley Jean Kiester

hirley Jean Kiester, affectionately known as “Squirrely Shirley,” but to those who knew and loved her best, she was simply Mom or Gramz, 81, of Keokuk, passed away Sunday, September 27, 2026, at Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in Fort Madison.

     She was born October 23, 1944, in Waukegan, Illinois, the daughter of Albert Joseph “Bud” and Leasurean “Wene” (Varner) McGillivray. Shirley graduated from Zion-Benton Township High School with the Class of 1962.

     On June 16, 1962, she was united in marriage to Gerald “Jerry” Kiester. He preceded her in death on May 3, 2002.

     Shirley loved animals of all kinds, flowers, camping and spending time around a warm campfire. She enjoyed telling stories and sharing memories, often bringing laughter and conversation wherever she went. She had a way of making memories out of the simple moments in life. Above all else, Shirley treasured her family. Being a mom and grandmother brought her great joy, and the time she spent with her loved ones was especially precious to her.

     Shirley is survived by her son, Todd Kiester (Valerie) of St. Francisville, Missouri; her daughter, Tina Printy of Keokuk; six grandchildren, Krystal McElroy, Kimber Kiester, Brandon Adams, Megan Adams, Josh Lafoon and Meranda Geissler; and eleven great-grandchildren.

     Besides her husband, Shirley was also preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Judy Ann Kolvis; her sons-in-law, Jim Adams and Kris Printy; and one great-grandchild.

     According to her wishes, there will be no services.

     In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to PAW Animal Shelter.

     Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, IA is assisting the family with arrangements.
