97 Chargers earn Academic All-Arrowhead Conference honors for 2025-26

GALESBURG — Sandburg had 97 student-athletes who earned Academic All-Arrowhead Conference honors in the 2025-26 academic year.

 

All 11 Sandburg teams had at least one player named academic all-conference. Twelve Chargers recorded a perfect 4.0 GPA, and three student-athlete honorees participated in multiple sports.

 

Baseball had the most representatives of any Sandburg squad, with 29 members. Women’s basketball had 10 Academic All-Arrowhead recipients to lead Sandburg's women's teams.

 

Student-athletes had to earn at least a 3.0 grade point average and meet credit hour requirements to be considered for Academic All-Arrowhead status.

Sandburg Foundation’s 50 Alumni, 50 States project wins bronze in CASE Circle of Excellence Awards

 The Carl Sandburg College Foundation has received national recognition for an alumni engagement initiative. 

The foundation’s 50 Alumni, 50 States project was named a 2026 Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) Circle of Excellence Awards winner, earning a bronze award in the Alumni Relations Initiatives (Less Than 10 Staff) category. 

The goal of 50 Alumni, 50 States is to connect with at least one alumnus from each state and share their journey from Sandburg to where they are today. Targeted social media posts directed individuals to complete a survey where they could share their state and upload a photo to complete a US map featuring some of Sandburg’s 66,000-plus alumni.

In highlighting these alumni, the campaign celebrates successes, builds engagement and showcases the contributions Sandburg alumni make across the nation. It’s even helped identify some alumni who have gone on to be nominated by the Sandburg Foundation for awards.

“We’re beyond honored to receive this recognition by CASE for our 50 Alumni, 50 States project,” Sandburg Vice President of Advancement Eric Johnson said. “Our Sandburg Foundation team deserves loads of credit for developing this idea and putting in the work to make it a successful piece that highlights just how far and wide our Sandburg alumni network reaches. We also are grateful to our alumni who have taken part in this project for allowing us to share their successes and shine a spotlight on the great accomplishments they’ve achieved in their time after Sandburg. Without them, this project isn’t possible.”

“This submission was recognized for its creative approach to alumni engagement and its strong potential as a model for other institutions,” contest judges said about the 50 Alumni, 50 States initiative. “Judges appreciated how the initiative adapted an existing concept into a low-cost, high-impact campaign that encouraged broad alumni participation with little barrier to entry. Its strong visual presence across multiple platforms helped demonstrate the reach of the alumni community while also supporting recruitment, volunteerism and social media engagement. The committee valued the way this initiative extended beyond traditional giving-day strategies to create meaningful connection across all 50 states.”

The CASE Circle of Excellence Awards serve as the premier recognition program for the educational advancement sector. Henderson joins Sandburg Foundation as athletic development & engagement officer

GALESBURG — Lucas Henderson, who has several years of college athletics experience as a coach, has joined the staff of the Carl Sandburg College Foundation as athletic development and engagement officer.

In his role, Henderson will connect with Chargers alumni and supporters to elevate the opportunities and experiences available to Sandburg student-athletes.

Prior to joining the Sandburg Foundation, Henderson served as the women’s soccer coach at Monmouth College from 2021-26. Henderson also has experience in NJCAA Region 4 athletics, having served as the inaugural coach of the women’s soccer program at Bryant & Stratton (Wis.) College from 2017-20.

“I’m thrilled to be part of the Sandburg family, and I’m joining at a very exciting time to be a Charger,” Henderson said. “With construction of the Charger Center on the horizon, we’re about to enter a new chapter of Sandburg athletics. I’m looking forward to finding ways to help our student-athletes succeed and connecting with Chargers alumni and fans to develop new ways to support our programs.”

Henderson has a bachelor’s in history from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and earned a master’s in sport management from UW-Parkside. A native of Sheboygan, Wis., Henderson lives in Rock Island with his wife Allie and their daughter Monroe.

“We’re incredibly excited to have Lucas as part of our team at Sandburg,” Vice President of Advancement Eric Johnson said. “With his collegiate coaching background, Lucas understands the value of what it means to be a student-athlete, the importance of having a strong alumni presence and the significant impact the community makes in supporting an athletics program.”

Sandburg announces 2026 spring semester dean’s, honors lists

To qualify for the dean’s list, a student must earn a grade point average of at least 3.5 (on a 4.0 scale). To be eligible for the honors list, a student must earn a grade point average of 3.0-3.49.

CARTHAGE CITY COUNCIL
REGULAR MEETING JULY 14th, 2026

The Regular Meeting of the Carthage City Council was held Tuesday, July 14 th , 2026, at
City Hall, 538 Wabash Avenue. Mayor Smith called the meeting to order at 7:00 P.M.
Answering to roll call were Aldermen Smith, Roberts, Steinkamp, Biondolino and
Walker. City Treasurer Pam Edris and Alderman Long were absent.
Motion was made by Alderman Walker, seconded by Smith to approve the special
meeting minutes of June 22 nd . All five present Aldermen answered “aye” in approval.
Motion was made by Alderman Walker, seconded by Roberts to approve the regular
meeting minutes of June 23 rd . All five present Aldermen answered “aye” in approval.
After discussion a motion was made by Alderman Walker, seconded by Biondolino to
approve the June budgetary report. All five present Aldermen voted “yes”.
Mayor Smith reported to the Council that Mediacom has torn down a tower without
notifying the City that they were going to do so. In doing so they damaged some of the
crops in a field next to that property.
Mayor Smith reported to the Council that the City did not need to donate any funds to the
fireworks. Several businesses in town made significant donations as well as three
memorials and several small donations. Two matching donations were made as well.
Mayor Smith reported to the Council that the City has received an offer for $2,250.00 for
the empty lot at 237 N. First street from a neighboring property.
Motion was made by Alderman Walker, seconded by Smith to approve the sale of 237 N.
First street for $2,250.00. All five present Aldermen voted “yes”.
Mayor Smith reported to the Council that the City has received an offer of $7,500.00 for
the empty lot at 315 Cherry street.
Motion was made by Alderman Walker, seconded by Smith to accept the offer of
$7,500.00 for the lot at 315 Cherry street. All five present Aldermen voted “yes”.
Clerk Roberts reported to the Council that he has submitted a request for records disposal
and that submittal has been approved. The records can be disposed of on or after July
25 th .

City Attorney Tom Hartzell reported on several delinquent properties. He also prepared
several Ordinances for the Councils consideration.
Alderman Smith reported to the Council that the Police Department has been very busy
with several issues over the last couple of weeks. He also reported that Officer St John is
now certified as a less lethal instructor after the training course that he recently took.
Alderman Smith reported to the Council that the Police Department would like to convert
a Police Department gun from .45 caliber to 9 mm. This will allow the department to use
that gun more because .45 ammo is much more expensive than 9 mm and they have more
9 mm ammo.
Motion was made by Alderman Smith, seconded by Walker to approve the purchase of a
conversion kit in the amount of $1,300.00. All five present Aldermen voted “yes”.
Alderman Smith reported to the Council that the VFW has submitted a permission form
for a car show on August 22 nd . The Council would like some more information before
this permission form is approved.
Alderman Biondolino would like to ask for bids for tree removal on City trees. He has a
list of potential trees to remove. The City will ask for bids to be submitted by August 7 th .
He also reported that the Street Department has made all of the necessary fixes at the
landfill that were required by the Illinois EPA.
After discussion a motion was made by Alderman Walker, seconded by Smith to approve
payment of the June Bills. All five present Aldermen voted “yes”.
Motion was made by Alderman Walker, seconded by Biondolino to pay Alderman Long
for tonight’s Council meeting. All five present Aldermen voted “yes”.
Alderman Biondolino reported to the Council that Laverdiere has submitted a proposal
for tilling, compaction, grading and shaping of roads in three areas including South head
street, Phines street cul-de-sac and Walnut street. The proposal is for $24,800.00.
Motion was made by Alderman Biondolino, seconded by Roberts to approve the proposal
of $24,800.00 for road work to be preformed by Laverdiere Construction. All five
present Aldermen voted “yes”.
Alderman Smith reported to the Council that the City Clerk has contacted American
Legal about the cost of recodification for the changes that have been discussed for the
Carthage Code Book. The proposal from American Legal is for a base cost of
$18,650.00. The City had put $20,000.00 in the budget for this project.

Motion was made by Alderman Smith, seconded by Walker to approve the proposal from
American Legal. All five present Aldermen voted “yes”.
Mayor Smith reported to the Council that an Ordinance has been prepared by the City
Attorney. This ordinance is to remove a section of zoning from the City limits. The City
currently doesn’t allow mobile homes in the City limits and there is still a section of town
that is zoned for mobile homes. This ordinance will remove that zoning.
Motion was made by Alderman Smith, seconded by Roberts to approve Ordinance No.
2026-5 an Ordinance removing title 10 zoning regulations, chapter 6 residential districts,
section 10-6-5: R-5 mobile home dwelling district. All five present Aldermen voted
“yes”.
Mayor Smith reported to the Council that an Ordinance has been prepared by the City
Attorney. This Ordinance is to establish a historic buildings district on top of the B-2:
central business district that has already been established.
Motion was made by Alderman Smith, seconded by Walker to approve Ordinance No.
2026-6 an Ordinance relating to zoning of the central business district and its joint
buildings district. All five present Aldermen voted “yes”.

MACOMB, IL- Mayor Inman and the Flags of Love Committee announce that the Flags of Love
will be displayed in Chandler Park on Saturday, July 4, 2026, from 7:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.
The display is in honor of Independence Day and will be set up with the volunteer help of the
