George Michael “Mike” Gronewold
George Michael “Mike” Gronewold, 65, of Carthage, passed away Saturday, August 8, 2026, at the family
farm.

Mike was born March 25, 1961, the son of George, Jr. and Carol (O’Connell) Gronewold, in Carthage,
Illinois. He attended Carthage High School, graduating in 1979, and later attended Culver-Stockton
College. After high school, he began working for Dowdall Farms. In 1995, he began his thirty-one-year
career with Nicor Gas Company, where he was still employed. He also continued farming and raising cattle,
a hobby he tremendously enjoyed.
Whether spending time with his wife, attending their daughters’ events, or watching his grandchildren, Mike
was a man who devoted his life to his family and serving others. He gave of himself unconditionally, always
willing to show up, lend a hand, and support the people he loved. His love for his family was evident in the
way he lived each day, and his selfless spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. Mike
loved Jesus and was an active member of The Crossing Church.

Mike is survived by his wife, Marla, of Carthage; daughters, Randi LeAnn (Zach) Summers of Keokuk,
Mary Danielle (Jordan) White of West Point, Lauren Michael Gronewold of Carthage, and Michaela Ann
(Kennedy) Gooding of Carthage; grandchildren, Harrison, Addison, and Ellison Summers, Sophia White,
Nash Neff, and Adley, Grace, and Reese Gooding; his mother, Carol Gronewold of Carthage; three
siblings, Joe (Connie) Gronewold and Jeanne Gronewold, both of Quincy, and Andy (Lori) Gronewold of
Carthage; aunts, Gerri Harrison of Carthage and Jane O’Connell of Quincy; and several nieces and
nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, George Gronewold, Jr.; brother, John Gronewold; his in-laws,
Junior and Mary Patrick; and uncles, Ed Harrison and Mike O’Connell.
Funeral services will be held at 9:00 a.m. Saturday, August 15, 2026, at Printy Funeral Home, with burial to
follow at Immanuel Lutheran Church Cemetery near Basco, Illinois. Visitation will be held from 4:00–8:00
p.m. Friday evening at Printy Funeral Home in Carthage.
In honor of Mike’s deep love for his family, a memorial fund has been created to benefit his grandchildren.

Ernestene Deatrick

1930-2026

 

 Ernestene Deatrick, 96, of Kahoka, passed away Monday, August 10, 2026, at the Clark County Nursing Home.

     She was born March 15, 1930, in her family home in Labelle, Missouri, the daughter of Ernest and Maggie Beard Tripp. Ernestene graduated from Wyaconda High School with the Class of 1947.    

     On November 29, 1947, she was united in marriage to George Deatrick in Memphis, Missouri. He preceded her in death on November 30, 1983, just one day after they celebrated thirty-six years of marriage.

     Ernestene worked as a telephone operator in Neeper and then worked at Sheller-Globe for twenty-three years before her retirement. She was a woman of faith and dedicated her time to teaching Sunday school at Ballard Church. She found great joy in her family and cherished the time she spent with her children, grandchildren, and extended family. Her family was the center of her life, and she will be lovingly remembered for the love and care she gave to those around her.

     Ernestene’s life was defined by her faith, her devotion to her family, and the many relationships she built throughout her 96 years. She leaves behind a beautiful family legacy and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

     She is survived by her son, Dan Deatrick and his wife, Elsie; her daughter, Teresa Worrell and her husband, Keith; grandchildren, Nathan Deatrick (Grace), Levi Deatrick (Carol), Stephen Deatrick (Jennifer), Naomi Shields (Matt), Daniel Deatrick (Lara), Michael Deatrick (Honorah), Kindra Bergman (Randy), Cody Worrell, and Brian Worrell (Chelsie); forty-three great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

     In addition to her husband, George, she was preceded in death by her parents; a son in infancy, Billie Max Deatrick; two great-grandchildren, David Matthew Deatrick and Truly Deatrick; three brothers, James Conrad Tripp, Warren Leonard Tripp, and George Michael Tripp; her sister, Dora Mae Deatrick; foster brother, John B. Johnson; and nephew, Mark Tripp.

     A funeral service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, August 13 at First Baptist Church in Wayland, with Pastor Dan Deatrick officiating. A private family graveside service will be held Friday at Liberty Cemetery in rural Fairmont, Missouri.

     Visitation will be held prior to the service Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the church, with the family greeting friends during that time.

     Memorials may be made to Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery in rural Fairmont.

Diane Kathleen Hechler

1958-2026

   Diann Kathleen Hechler of Quincy, Illinois (formerly of Keokuk, Iowa) passed away peacefully Saturday evening August 1, 2026 at Sunset Nursing Home Quincy after a brief illness.

     She was born March 2, 1958, at St. Joseph’s Hospital Keokuk to Shirley (Keim) Hechler and Ralph W. Hechler of Keokuk who both proceeded her in death. She is survived by her three siblings Debby (Hechler) Stotts, daughter Olivia (Stotts) Reed and husband Landon, great nephew Beau Reed; daughter Kara (Stotts) Bowles and husband Cooper, great nieces Leyton Bowles and Aubrey Bowles; Dale (Ann) Hechler, sons Charles Hechler and Samuel Hechler; Doug (Tina) Hechler, son Mark Savage and fiancée Desiree Schueller, son Nick (Leslie) Savage, great nephew Graham and great niece Eleanor; and son Chase (Jessica) Hechler.

     Diann’s parents were advocates and supporters of Catholic education in Keokuk, and she graduated from Cardinal Stritch High School Keokuk in 1976. Her professional career consisted of working in the finance and banking industry.

      She loved her family, especially her nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephew. She also loved spending time with her extended family which included the Lambert, Petty, Ewers, and McNally families for holidays, vacations, and get-togethers. She was a big Iowa Hawkeye fan, but an even bigger St. Louis Cardinal fan.

     A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, October 3, 2026 at Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk with Father Hai Dinh officiating.  Burial will be in the Oakland Cemetery.

     Visitation will be held prior to the service from 1-2 p.m., Saturday, October 3 at the funeral home with family meeting with friends at that time.

Blaine Clancy

1965 – 2026

 Blaine "Sarge" Clancy, 61, of Keokuk, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, July 19, 2026, at Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington, Iowa.

     He was born on June 8, 1965, in Bloomfield, Iowa, the son of Lyle Eugene and Verna Mae Willier Clancy.

     Sarge graduated from Davis County High School in Bloomfield with the Class of 1983. Following high school, he proudly served his country in the Army National Guard during Operation Desert Storm.

     Throughout his working years, Sarge was employed at Heatilator in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. He also enjoyed the unique experience of traveling and working with carnivals, an adventure that allowed him to meet many people. 

     In his free time, Sarge enjoyed collecting geodes and had a talent for crafting knives from deer antlers.

     Sarge is survived by his daughter, Makayla Clancy (Curtis McKune) of Keokuk; his granddaughters, Raven, Ivy and Azurite; his former wife, Sue Clancy of Keokuk; one brother, Brian Clancy; three sisters, Bonnie Clancy, Beverly Schumacher, and Barb Showalter; along with several nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.

     He was preceded in death by his parents, Lyle and Verna Clancy; his brother, Brent Clancy; and his faithful four-legged companion, Athena.

     Visitation will be held from 1 – 3 p.m., Sunday, August 9 at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk.

Marion Delores Berquam, 89, of Hamilton, passed away surrounded by loved ones at
her home Tuesday evening, July 28, 2026.
Marion was born July 13, 1937, the daughter of Bernard and Veronica (Mondry) Wirkus
in Webster, South Dakota. She graduated from Roslyn High School in Roslyn, South
Dakota. She moved to Minnesota and met Gerhard “Ole” Berquam at a dance hall.
They danced their way to getting married on May 16, 1959, in St. Paul, Minnesota. The
family lived in Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota for many years before moving to
Hamilton, Illinois in 1978. Marion had worked for Methode Electronics in Carthage for
over twenty years. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Hamilton and
regularly recited the rosary before Mass. She enjoyed bingo and playing cards,
especially euchre. She also loved shopping and rescuing animals. Her greatest love
and joy, however, came from spending time with her rambunctious family. They have
always been the center of her life.
Together, Marion and Gerhard raised a large and loving family. Surviving Marion are
her caring husband of 67 years, Gerhard, of Hamilton; and children, Lori (Karen
Patterson) Berquam of Madison, Wisconsin, LeeAnn (Brian) McLaughlin of Paris,
Missouri, Bruce Berquam of Hamilton, Kelly (Scott) Hall of Warsaw, Gary (Candy)
Berquam of Hamilton and Melani (Tim) Heavin of Hamilton; grandchildren, Kevin
McLaughlin, Krissy (Scott) Schulze, Kelly (Danielle) McLaughlin, Kyle (Melinda)
McLaughlin, Kayla (Justin) Lowe, Kaci (Sarah Parker) McLaughlin, Kraig McLaughlin
and Kyndal McLaughlin, Ryan (Brianne) Stephenson, Travis (Kara) Stephenson, Elija
(Abigail) Stephenson, Hannah (Mallory Novack) Hall, Emma (Xavier Hutchcroft) Hall,
Allison (Josh) Roberts, McKenzie Berquam, Austin Berquam, Justus Berquam, Joel
(Taylor) Heavin, Jessica (Trevor) Roth and Jordan (Daniel) Leroy; thirty one great-
grandchildren and one soon-to-be born great-great granddaughter. She also leaves
behind numerous nieces, nephews, family and friends who all had an impact on her life.
She was preceded in death by her parents; children, Craig Berquam and Kevin
Berquam; a brother, Raymond Wirkus and a sister, Marcella Grajczyk.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, August 2nd, from 4:00 – 7:00 PM at Printy Funeral
Home in Hamilton with a rosary service starting at 7:00 PM. Funeral services will be
held at 11:00 AM on Monday, August 3rd, 2026, at Printy Funeral Home in Hamilton. In

Anthony Norris Smith

1961-2026

 

 Anthony Norris Smith, 65 of Keokuk, IA, died Thursday, July 9, 2026 at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, IA. 

     He was born February 24, 1961 in Cedar Rapids, IA the son of Nellie Dawson Bradley. 

     Anthony was the kind of person who could fix just about anything he put his hands on and was always willing to lend those talents to anyone in need. Helping others came naturally to him, and he found genuine joy in making life a little easier for the people around him.

     Music was one of Anthony's greatest passions. A gifted musician, he loved playing guitar and sharing his talent with family and friends while performing with his band, creating memories that will be treasured for years to come. He also enjoyed drawing, another creative outlet that reflected his artistic spirit.

     Anthony lived life to the fullest. With his outgoing personality and infectious smile, he never met a stranger and had a remarkable way of making everyone feel like a friend. His generous heart, kind nature, and willingness to be there whenever someone needed him are the qualities that will be remembered most by all who knew and loved him.

     Anthony is survived by his loving wife, Pamela Smith of Keokuk; two daughters, Alea Mooney and Lisa Smith; three sons, Anthony Moore, Jerry Blackwell, and Anthony Smith Jr.; his sister, Cynthia Williams (Robert) of Keokuk; his mother-in-law, Sheila Blackwell; six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.        

     He was preceded in death by his mother, his grandparents, two brothers and one son Jeffrey Moore and his father-in-law, Jerry Blackwell.       

     A celebration of life will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. on Monday, August 3, at the Lake Cooper Foundation. The family will greet friends during this time. Dinner and fellowship will be provided as family and friends gather to honor and celebrate a life well lived.

David Rock Smith, 93

David Rock Smith, 93, of Carthage, passed away Saturday, July 25, 2026,
at his home at 4:28 PM.
David was born March 15, 1933, the son of David Galbraith and Alice
(Rock) Smith in Keokuk, Iowa. He graduated from Carthage High School in
1951 and went on to receive his Bachelor of Science degree from the
University of Iowa. He served in the U.S. Navy receiving his Honorable
Discharge in 1956. David was a lifelong farmer in Hancock County and the
fifth generation of his family to reside at the family home.
David is survived by his sons, David K. (Tara) Smith of Lakewood,
Colorado and Michael Frederick Smith of Boulder, Colorado; grandchildren,
Jordan (Tyler) Wallace and Logan Smith.
He was preceded in death by a son, Thomas Scott Smith; and a sister,
Lucia Smart.
Graveside services will be held at 10:AM Friday, July 31, 2026, at Moss
Ridge Cemetery in Carthage with military rites by the United States Navy
and Hancock County Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be
directed to the Tunnels for Towers Foundation. Printy Funeral Home of

Miles C. Brewer
1935-2026

      Miles C. Brewer 90 of Keokuk, passed away Tuesday, July 21, 2026 at his home.  He has finished his life’s race and is now in heaven where he was looking forward to going.

     Miles was born November 30, 1935, at his family farm home near New York, Iowa to David Glenn and Ruth Juanita Hudson Brewer.  He grew up in southern Iowa, except for several years when the family moved to Oak Ridge, Tennessee where his father held a government job during WWII.  He graduated from Seymour IA. High School in l954, and graduated from Northeast Missouri State Teacher’s College, (now Truman State) in l958. He received his M.A. degree in l960, and also studied at Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida. Miles was a proud veteran of the United States Army for and served for 2 years during the Berlin Crisis era, and was a member of the local American Legion. 

     He married Carolyn Surber at the Ottumwa, IA Assembly of God on April 20, 1962.  They were married for 64 years.  She survives.

     Miles was a public school teacher in Keokuk at Lincoln School for 42 years, grades 4-5-6.  For 40 of those years, he was Assistant Principal at Lincoln.   He also spent many summers teaching summer school & “college for kids,” as well as teaching adults obtaining their GED’s.  

     Miles was a Member of Living Waters Assembly of God and a faithful, dedicated Christian man. He served as a Sunday School teacher there for 60 years. He sang in the choir, and was a gifted musician.  He helped begin a Scouting project for boys  called Royal Rangers & was Commander for many years.  He served at the local, state and national levels as a Ranger Leader.  

     Miles worked with the county Soil and Water Conservation for 25 years. He was a conservationist at heart, loved working outdoors & developed lessons teaching young people (and anyone who was interested) why Iowa has a large share of world class soils! He was responsible & carefully cared for the one acre native tall grass prairie at Hawthorne elementary school that he and his fourth graders planted in 1990. 

     He was a family man - loving and enjoying every minute he could spend with them.  Most summers included a family vacation over various parts of the U.S. Miles was proud to be able to say he had been to all of the states (except Hawaii). Miles never knew a stranger. He could strike up a conversation with anyone, and loved going to McDonald’s once a week for coffee & visiting with his Church friends. 

     Miles is survived by his wife, Carolyn, Son Kent  Brewer from Manchester, IA; Daughter, Angela Brayden (Bryan) from the Minneapolis area;  Son Kristopher Brewer (Lori) from Keokuk; Grandchildren, Luke Baker (Meghan), Rochester, MN,; Avery Whitaker (Matt), Minneapolis area;  Mitchell Baker, (San Diego, CA); Addelyn Brewer (Des Moines, IA), Hannah Brewer (Dayton, OH), Elliana Brewer (Keokuk), Great Grandchildren; Peyton Baker; Everette & Walter Whitaker.  Sister Betty Spence, Wylie Texas, Brother David L. Brewer, (Meryl), Keokuk. Miles was preceded in death by his sister Susie McCaughey, Oak Grove, MO. and his parents.

     A funeral service will be held Thursday morning, July 30 at 10:30 am, at Living Waters Assembly of God Church in Keokuk with Rev. Larry Wallingford officiating.

Gerald Wayne Jones

Gerald Wayne Jones, 85, of Ottumwa, Ia, formerly of Carthage, passed away at 6:13
PM, Monday, July 20,2026, at his home.
Gerald was born on October 30, 1940, the son of Lawrence Ray and Doris Elaine
(Webb) Jones in Keokuk, Iowa. He graduated from Carthage High School in 1959 and
then attended Gem City Business College where he received his business degree. On
June 24,1960, he was united in marriage to Patricia Swartz at the Presbyterian Church
in Carthage. This union lasted 66 years. Gerald farmed for many years, then drove a
fuel truck for Wright Petroleum and later FS for 25 years, retiring in 2008. He also had
his real-estate license and sold real estate for Sharpe Reality. Gerald was a member of
the Bentley saddle club, Hancock County Pork producers, was a 4H leader for 20 years
and coached youth fast pitch softball for 15 years. He was also a member of the First
Baptist Church in Macomb. His favorite past time was spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia; a daughter, Debbie (Paul) Tanksley of Ottumwa, Ia;
two daughters-in-law, Tina Jones of Carthage and Liv Jones of San Antonio, Tx; seven
grandchildren, Kalean (Christian) Schrock, Isaac (Tiffany) Tanksley, Caleb Tanksley,
Jacob (Rebekah) Tanksley, Cassie (Joe) Shoemaker, Brittany (Kody) Horn, and Leanne
Jones; twelve great grandchildren with two more on the way, and many nieces,
nephews and cousins.
Gerald was preceded in death by; his parents and two sons, Doug and Darrin.
A funeral service will be held at 3:00 PM on Saturday, July 25, 2026, at Printy Funeral
Home in Carthage, with burial to follow at Moss Ridge Cemetery in Carthage. Visitation
will be from 1:00 PM until the time of service at 3:00 PM at the funeral home in
Carthage. Memorials may be made to Pat Jones, for the great-grandkid’s education
fund. The family requests, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the memorial. Printy

Larry Conners, 86 of Tonapah, AZ passed away July 16, 2026.
He was born March 3, 1940 in Keokuk, IA.  After graduating high school he
joined the navy, 1958-1962.  He was employed at Hubinger (Roquette) 35
years where he retired.  He always had a presence at Strohn's Fish Market
in Hamilton helping family.
He was preceded in death by parents, Frank Conners and Geneva Wood,
son, Denis Conners, nephew, Christopher Davis, grandson, Justin Neff and
his favorite uncle, Lauren (Bill) Strohn.  
He is survived by son, Darin Conners of Kahoka, Mo., daughter, Sonia
Mohl of Flagstaff, AZ,grand children Adam Conners, Stephanie Nixon,
Preston Neff, Brittany Neff,  step children; several great grand children; and
his sister, Doris E. Davis of Nashville, TN.
A graveside service will be held at 2:30 PM, Tuesday, July 28, 2026, at
Oakwood Cemetery in Hamilton with military rites accorded by the United
States Navy and Hancock County Honor Guard. Visitation will be held from
12:00 PM to 2:00 PM Tuesday afternoon at Printy Funeral Home in
Hamilton prior to the graveside service.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Tunnel to Towers Foundation
for veterans.

Leona M. Good, 77, of Keokuk, passed away on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, at Montrose
Health Center in Montrose, Iowa, surrounded by the people that loved her.
Leona was born on June 4, 1949, in Carthage, Illinois, the daughter of Albert and
Mamie (Prostman) Ellefritz. She graduated from Carthage High School in 1969. On
February 14, 2002, she was united in marriage to Everett LaVerne Good, he survives.
Leona was a member of New Testament Christian Church in Keokuk and enjoyed
spending time mowing (especially at the YMCA) and being outdoors. She had a heart of
gold, a generous spirit and always spoke her mind. Leona was a friend to all and never
met a stranger.
Leona is survived by her husband Everett LaVerne Good of Keokuk; her son William L.
Walker, Jr.; two grandsons: Scott Alan Walker and Damon Walker; and many other
family members.
Leona is preceded in death by her parents and her sister Alice Craig.
Funeral services will be held at 12 pm (Noon) on Monday, July 27, 2026, at DeJong-
Printy Funeral Home in Keokuk, with burial to follow at Hickory Grove Cemetery in rural
Keokuk. Visitation will be held from 10 am to 12 pm (Noon) on Monday at the funeral
home directly before the service.

Kayden Sangster

2006-2026

 

 Kayden Sangster, 20 of Keokuk, IA passed away Sunday, July 19, 2026 at his home.

     He was born May 11, 2006 in Iowa City, IA the son of Thomas and Doreanea McFarland Sangster.  Kayden graduated from Keokuk High School with the class of 2024.

     Kayden enjoyed playing video games, riding around in his wheelchair, and, most of all, spending time with his family, who meant everything to him. He was a devoted fan of Toy Story, loved building with Legos, and found great happiness in gifting stuffies to others, a simple gesture that reflected his generous and caring heart. Creative and imaginative, Kayden also took great pride in writing his own book and enjoyed expressing himself through storytelling.

     Kayden had a heart full of love and brought joy to everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. His kind spirit, infectious smile, and gentle nature left a lasting impression on all who met him. He never let life's challenges define him and instead faced each day with remarkable strength, resilience, and a positive outlook.  One of his favorite outings was going to Kempker’s in Ft. Madison, IA.

     He is survived by his mother, Doreanea McFarland (Eddie Redd); his father, Thomas Sangster; his siblings, Taylor Sangster (Shonnie Braggs), Kailey Sangster, Korbyn Sangster (Brayton Prewitt), Dylan Sangster, and Laikyn Sangster; his paternal grandparents, Sharon Sangster and Jim Clark; his maternal grandmother, Betty McFarland; and many other relatives and friends and his best friend and cat, Pepper.

     A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, July 23 at Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, IA.  Burial will be in the Hickory Grove Cemetery in rural Keokuk.

     Visitation will be held prior to the service, Thursday, from 9-11 a.m., at the funeral home with family meeting with friends at that time.

Cathleen Kay Melinda Cameron,68 years of Warsaw, Il (formerly of Hamilton, Il)
passed away Thursday, July 16, 2026, while in the Carthage hospital.
She was born on March 13, 1958, in Keokuk, IA, to Clarence and Barbara (Squires)
Cameron. She was unmarried.
She is survived by her siblings, Perry Cameron of Carthage, Il, David (Marie) Cameron
of Shawnee, OK, Patrick Cameron of Kenosha, WI, and Deirdre “Dee” (Tamara)

Kay was preceded in death by her grandparents, mother - Barbara, father - Clarence
and sister - Bonnie.
Kay graduated from Hamilton High School in 1976 (where she played on numerous
sports teams) and from Blessing Hospital School of Nursing in Quincy, IL in 1979.
She was active in nursing until 1989 when she moved to Kansas City, MO. There she
worked for Equifax as a medical claims’ adjustor utilizing her nursing skills. Kay returned
to the Warsaw area in 2017 where she became well known locally. She enjoyed the
outdoors and pet sitting.
Visitation will be at 10 a.m., followed by funeral services at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July
30th, at Printy Funeral Home at 405 Cherry Street, Carthage, Il. Burial will follow at the
Oakwood Cemetery in Hamilton, IL.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Hearts of Hancock Humane Society.

Richard “Rick” Meredith

1955-2026

 

  Richard “Rick” Meredith, 70 of Keokuk passed away Thursday, July 16, 2026 at his home.

     He was born November 18, 1955, in Keokuk, Iowa, the son of Warren and Lois Malone Meredith. He graduated from Keokuk High School with the Class of 1974, attended Southeastern Community College, and later Iowa State University.

     Rick was a proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps, serving his country from 1980 to 1984.

     He was employed at Henniges Automotive in Keokuk for 33 years before retiring on November 30, 2017. Rick had a generous heart and was deeply committed to his community. For many years, he faithfully served as the local Toys for Tots coordinator, bringing joy and hope to countless children and families during the holiday season. He was also a member of United Steelworkers Local 444 at Henniges.

     Rick loved the outdoors and especially enjoyed deer and pheasant hunting. He was an avid fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes, the Dallas Cowboys, and the St. Louis Cardinals, and looked forward each year to participating in his fantasy football and baseball leagues. Rick also enjoyed training German Shorthaired Pointers. He took great pride in keeping an immaculate yard and was well known for his meticulous lawn care. An accomplished Master Gardener, he found great satisfaction in working outdoors and caring for his landscape.

     He is survived by his children, Brad Meredith (Melinda) and Candace Graybill (Tyler); his grandchildren, Annalee, Max, and Brody; his longtime companion, Denise Nelson of Keokuk; his sister, Barbie Johnson (Jeff Courtois) of Keokuk; his niece, Tessa Stidham (Rob) and nephew, Jeremy Johnson and his beloved four-legged companions, Lucy and Maverick.

     He was preceded in death by his parents.

     A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 24, 2026, at First Christian Church in Keokuk, with Cathie Courtois officiating.

     Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, July 23, 2026, Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, IA, where the family will meet with friends during that time.

     Memorials may be made to Toys for Tots of Lee County, Iowa, and Clark County, Missouri, or to PAW Animal Shelter.

Carl L. Sparrow

1951-2026

 

   Carl L. Sparrow, 75 died peacefully at his home in Keokuk on Monday, July 13, 2026. His daughter and son-in-law were blessed to be at his side.

     Carl was born May 21, 1951, in Quincy, Illinois, the son of Robert and Jessie Sparrow. He grew up in West Point, Illinois, primarily raised by his grandparents Alva and Mabel Sparrow. He attended school in Bowen, Illinois, with the class of 1970. Carl started out his career with the Keokuk Gas Company and stayed with the company until his retirement. He saw the company bought and sold many times, eventually requiring his transfer to Johnson City, Tennessee, where he lived for 25 years. He and his wife Diane returned to Keokuk to retire.

      Carl is survived by his wife Diane Sparrow, his daughter Melissa (Alan) Brewer of Hamilton, and sons Dennis (Lynne) Sparrow of Quincy and Adam (Stephanie) Sparrow of Texas. Carl cherished his grandchildren, Jacob (Courtney) Ayers, Lizabeth (Zack) Taylor, Sam Sparrow, Emma Sparrow, and Skylar Sparrow, and his three great-granddaughters, Elliot Ayers, Hazel Taylor, and Ruby Taylor. Additionally, he is survived by his step-daughter Tammy of New Mexico and step-son Tim of the Kansas City area, their spouses and children. Locally, he is also survived by multiple siblings and their spouses, as well as a special sister-in-law Peggy (Doug) Peterson.

      Upon Carl’s request, there will be a private graveside service for immediate family only on Monday. Memorials may be made to Lee County Hospice.

Cindy “Scoot” Snyder

Cindy “Scoot” Snyder, 74, of LaHarpe, Illinois, passed away at 11:15 p.m. Friday, July 10, 2026 at the Monmouth Rehab and Nursing in Monmouth, Illinois. 

 

Cindy was born March 29, 1952 in Burlington, Iowa, the daughter of S. Dale and Bonnie (Conn) Stout. On February 14, 1999 she married James “Jim” Snyder at the Burnside Christian Church, Burnside, Illinois.

 

Cindy was a 1970 graduate of Burlington High School. Following high school, she managed the Ayerco Gas Station in Burlington. She later lived in Donnellson and Fort Madison, Iowa, before making her home in LaHarpe. She then attended the former Midstate College in Carthage, Illinois, earning her Medical Assistant degree. She worked as a Medical Assistant for the remainder of her life at numerous medical clinics throughout the area. 

 

Cindy was lover of animals, especially her Cocker Spaniels. She and Jim were foster parents to many children. She enjoyed shopping, and always found the “best deals”, whether in the store or online. She was a longtime member of the Burnside Christian Church. 

 

Besides her husband, survivors include two children: Katie Mellinger of Middletown, Iowa and Joey Snyder of Quincy, Illinos; two grandchildren: Andrew “Cecil” Mellinger of Burlington and Lucas Mellinger of Middletown; two sisters: Teresa Swiney and Leah Kuntz; her step mother: Mary Lou Stout of Nashville, Tennessee; one step-sister: Krista Williams and her in-laws: Jim and Wilma Snyder. Also surviving is her beloved Cocker Spaniel: Clover. 

 

She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister: Sharon Cottrell.

 

Cremation has been entrusted to Banks & Beals Funeral Home. 

 

The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 15, 2026 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe. 

 

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, July 16, 2026 at the Burnside Christian Church with Pastor Mark Nichols officiating.

Robert James Clarizio, 69, of Forney, Texas, formerly of Hamilton, passed
away at 1:18 PM, Saturday, July 4, 2026, at his home.
Robert was born February 16, 1957, in Smyrna, Tennessee, the son of Carl
Joseph and Gloria (Lenzi) Clarizio. He is survived by his wife, Tracy of
Smyrna.
Private burial will be held at the family plot in Riverside Cemetery near

Helen Marie Lemley, 83

Helen Marie Lemley, 83, passed away peacefully on July 7, 2026, in Macomb.
She was born at home September 10, 1942, in Tennessee, IL to the late Albert and
Mildred (Moore) Lemley.
She is survived by her brother Junior Lemley and sister Marilyn (Robert) Baxter, both of
Tennessee, three nephews, Wyatt Baxter who has been a devoted caregiver, Brad
(Kelsey) Baxter, Brian (Jackie) Baxter, one niece Carrie Dawdy, eight great nephews
and nieces, and one great grandniece.
Preceding her in death are her parents, a brother Arthur Lemley, a sister Shirley
Riggins, and a brother-in-law Bill Riggins.
Helen graduated from Colchester High School. She spent her life living on the
McDonough and Hancock County line on the family farms. She enjoyed spending time
with family and living in the countryside. Whether she was tending to her flowers,
reading the newspaper, or spending time in the kitchen, Helen found joy in the little
things.
A graveside service will be held at 10am on Saturday, July 11, 2026, at Oak Grove
Cemetery east of Carthage. A visitation will be held from 5-7pm on Friday, July 10,
2026, at Printy Funeral Home in Carthage. Printy Funeral Home is handling

Martha S. Youngmeyer

Martha S. Youngmeyer, 71, of Carthage, Illinois, passed away on Friday, July 10, 2026,
at Memorial Hospital in Carthage, Illinois.
Martha was born on December 12, 1954, in Carthage, Illinois, the daughter of Michael
“Mike” and Betty (Munson) Strubinger. She graduated from Carthage High School in
1972, and went on to attend Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois. On January 2, 1993,
she was united in marriage to Stephen “Steve” Youngmeyer in Carthage, Illinois. He
preceded her in death on January 19, 2026.
Martha was employed at KOKX Radio in Keokuk as a DJ for many years before
becoming Secretary for Institutional Research and Planning at Western Illinois
University, where she retired after sixteen years (with a pension, as she loved to point
out). After retirement, her switchboard skills were needed at WCAZ radio in Carthage,
where she broadcast sports for several more years. Martha was a talented quilter and
had a quilt displayed at the nationally acclaimed Paducah Quilt Show in Kentucky. She
was an avid Chicago Cubs and Caitlyn Clark fan, often rewatching old Cubs games and
sharing the results with her family. Above all else, Martha will be remembered for her
devotion and loyalty to her family and her unending love for her grandchildren.
Martha is survived by her daughter Tanya (Robert) West of Carthage, Illinois; five
grandchildren: Ava Law, Garrett West, Owen West, Taylor West and Skylar West; two
brothers: Charles (Susan) Strubinger of Missouri and Larry (Bill) Strubinger of Florida;
and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Martha is preceded in death by her parents and her husband Steve.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, from 2 to 6 pm, with family meeting

Betty Lee Sherrill

1956-2026

 

 Betty Lee Sherrill, 70, of Keokuk, Iowa, passed away at her home on Sunday, July 5, 2026.

     Betty was born on January 21, 1956, in Keokuk, Iowa, the daughter of Larry and Mary (Henley) Sherrill. She graduated from Mt. Zion High School in Mt. Zion, Illinois, with the Class of 1974.

     Throughout her life, Betty held a variety of occupations.  She began her career working as a nurse's aide before becoming a certified medical technician. Betty later went to police academy and completed her training at the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana and made history as the first female police officer in Decatur, Illinois, serving the community for five years. She later spent ten years as a semi-truck driver.  Most recently, Betty was employed at the Hampton Inn in Keokuk, where her quick thinking and compassion were evident when she performed CPR on a guest, saving his life.

     Betty had a deep love for animals and especially enjoyed attending all types of animal shows. She was an avid collector of Beanie Babies and took great pride in her extensive collection. She loved decorating her home for the holidays, with Halloween and Christmas being her favorites. Betty also enjoyed watching movies and never missed an episode of Ghost Adventures, hosted by Zak Bagans. Above all, Betty had a generous heart and was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.

     She is survived by her son, Matthew Lorenz of Cincinnati, Ohio; her son-in-law, Johnathon Lorenz of Cincinnati, Ohio; her mother, Mary Sherrill of Keokuk; two brothers, Doug Sherrill of Des Moines, Iowa, and Larry Sherrill Jr. of Keokuk; and four sisters, Linda Nihiser of Keokuk, Judy Lash of Clinton, Illinois, Terri Sherrill of Washington, Iowa, and Diana Richardson of Keokuk.

     She was preceded in death by her infant son, David Joseph Lorenz, and her brother, Michael Sherrill.

     In accordance with Betty's wishes, cremation has taken place, and no services will be held.

Donald Hornung

1933-2026

  Donald Hornung, 93, of Keokuk, Iowa, passed away on Friday, July 3, 2026, at Azria Health Prairie Ridge in Mediapolis, Iowa.

     Donald was born on March 15, 1933, in Keokuk, the son of William "Bill" and Justine (Verburg) Hornung. Following his graduation from high school, he proudly served his country in the United States Air Force, enlisting on January 13, 1953. He was honorably discharged on January 12, 1957.

     After returning home, Donald began a career with Burlington Northern Railroad, where he worked as a shipping clerk for more than thirty years before retiring.

     Donald found pleasure in painting, writing, and reading biographies.

     He is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

     He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Janet Cunningham and Wilma Magerkurth; half-sister; Leona Manley and his brother, Robert Hornung.

     A private graveside service will be held at Keokuk National Cemetery in Keokuk at a later date.

Sandra Louise (Thorn) Johnson, 82

 

Sandra Louise (Thorn) Johnson, 82 of Carthage, IL passed away on Thursday,
February 19, 2026, at Memorial Hospital in Carthage, IL.
A celebration of life to remember the love and joy that Sandra brought to so many will
be at 1pm on Saturday, July 18, 2026, at Printy Funeral Home in Carthage. A visitation

James Edwin  Phillips

James Edwin Phillips, age 89, of Warsaw, Illinois, passed away peacefully on
Thursday, July 2, 2026.
Born on February 27, 1937, Jim proudly served his country as a Specialist in the U.S. Army
during the Cold War. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to his lifelong home of
San Diego, California, where he met Barbara Romero (Shiepe) and welcomed his two boys.
Deeply committed to public service, Jim worked hard to balance a dual career as a San
Diego City Supervisor over the Roads and Water Department while simultaneously serving
as a Reserve Officer for the San Diego Police Department.
In 1969, he married Janet R. Phillips, and upon his retirement, they found their peaceful
haven at Happy Acres Farm in Warsaw, IL where Jim spent his later years enjoying the
quiet and open skies of the land. More than anything, Jim was a fiercely supportive father,
uncle, and grandfather, serving as a steady anchor for his family. His sons' younger years
were rich with outdoor adventures, family camping trips, fishing, coaching little league
baseball, and reveled in the excitement of riding dirt bikes together. Jim carried that same
energy into his role as a grandfather and great-grandfather, taking immense pride in
watching his legacy grow through the generations.
Jim was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Janet; his parents, James Perry Phillips and
Greta Ruhnow; and his sister, Evelyn Lubic.
His love and devotion live on through his surviving family: his sons, James D. Phillips and
Ronnie Phillips; his grandchildren, Audra (Mike) Tibbits, Lynsey (Devin) Beaston, James
Phillips, Zachary Phillips, Cody Phillips, and Sophie Phillips; his great-grandchildren, Jett,
Amelia, and Maverick; and his beloved nephews and their children.
In accordance with Jim's explicit wishes, there will be no formal funeral services, burial, or
