IW was down 0-6 going into the 4th inning, and then scored 2. IW held them at 6 and then scored 6 themselves in the top of the 5th inning. North Fulton answered with one more run and IW continued their run, ending the game 10-7.

Elly Krieg led the Chargers at the plate, going 3 for 4 with RBI's. 

Payton Downs went 2 for 3 with 1 RBI.

Madalyn Boyer and Allison Icenogle both went 2 for 4 with 1 RBI.

Rachel James led the way at the plate going 3 for 4. She hit a 2 run homerun and ended with 3 RBI's.

Pair of Chargers Freshmen Voted All-Arrowhead Conference

GALESBURG — A pair of Carl Sandburg College women’s basketball freshmen earned spots on the All-Arrowhead Conference Team after leading the Chargers in numerous statistical categories this season.

 

Guard Elly Bentley was voted by league coaches to the All-Arrowhead First Team, while forward Lilly Isenhour was a Second-Team selection.

Bentley, a 5-foot-3 product of Limestone High School, played all 10 conference games for the Chargers and led the team with 19.0 points, 4.8 assists and 1.5 steals per contest. She shot 42% from the field and knocked down 74% of her shots at the foul line. Bentley also grabbed 5.2 rebounds per game.

 

Bentley, who also earned Second-Team All-Region IV honors in her freshman campaign, scored at least 13 points in each of Sandburg’s conference games and had three outings of at least 20 points. She had 28 points, four rebounds and five assists in the Chargers’ Jan. 19 win at Illinois Valley.

 

Isenhour, a 6-foot graduate of Prince of Peace in Clinton, Iowa, averaged a double-double in 10 conference games, putting up 16.9 points and a team-best 12.4 rebounds. Isenhour shot 55% from the floor to lead the Chargers and was a 71% free-throw shooter. She also averaged 1.5 assists and 1.3 steals in Arrowhead play.

 

Isenhour notched seven double-doubles against conference opponents, including three 20-point double-doubles. She scored a season-best 28 points on 12-of-18 shooting and pulled in 16 rebounds in Sandburg’s Jan. 17 win against Sauk Valley. Isenhour had a season-high 21 rebounds (nine on the offensive glass) and 11 points in the Chargers’ Feb. 7 contest against Black Hawk.

Sandburg Sophomore Barnett Voted 2nd-Team All-Arrowhead

GALESBURG — Carl Sandburg College men’s basketball player Connor Barnett was voted to the All-Arrowhead Conference Second Team by league coaches after leading the Chargers in scoring and assists this season.

 

A 6-foot-5 sophomore guard, Barnett started all 10 conference games for Sandburg, averaging a team-best 11.8 points per contest. The Fulton High School product shot 46% from the field, 74% from the free-throw line and led the Chargers with 2.8 assists per game. Barnett also totaled nine steals in conference action and was third on the team in rebounding at 4.6 per game.

 

He scored a career-high 21 points on 6-of-11 shooting in Sandburg’s win Jan. 31 against Kishwaukee. Barnett hit three 3-pointers and grabbed six rebounds in the victory. He reached double figures in scoring in seven Arrowhead games.

Sandburg Softball Heads to Gulf Coast for Spring Break Trip

Sandburg Softball Heads to Gulf Coast fo

GALESBURG — After opening its season with a pair of games last week at Spoon River, the Carl Sandburg College softball team travels down to Florida for spring break.

 

The Chargers have a stretch of four doubleheaders in five days near the Gulf Coast starting this weekend. Sandburg will play Saturday at Coastal Alabama-East, Monday at Bishop State, Tuesday at Coastal Alabama-South and Wednesday at Pensacola State. 

 

The Chargers finished 15-29 overall last season and 8-12 in the Arrowhead Conference under coach Todd Winkler. Fans can follow Sandburg softball live all season long on the GameChanger app.

 

NOTABLE RETURNERS

Emma Wolfe (Dunlap, Ill./Dunlap), sophomore IF 

  • A versatile infielder with a strong bat, Wolfe led the Chargers last year in runs, home runs (eight), doubles (15), triples (nine), average (.403) and slugging (.799). 
  • Voted All-Region IV and All-Arrowhead Conference as a freshman last season.

Chelsey Catton (Pekin, Ill./Pekin), sophomore P

  • Led the team in strikeouts (75) last season, appearances (19) and tied for the team lead in wins (five).

Kayla Wolf (Chillicothe, Ill./Illinois Valley Central), sophomore C

  • Considered a team leader by Winkler, Wolf finished third on the squad in RBIs last spring with 33.

  • Winkler: “She’s solid in the infield and has a solid bat.”

WHAT ARE YOUR EXPECTATIONS FOR THIS TEAM THIS SEASON?

Winkler: “My expectations are getting better every game we play. For these games on spring break, if we can win half we will be in good shape because when we get off the bus, the opposing teams down south have played between 24 and 30 games already. We have hardly been outside, so our goal to start is just to get better and put ourselves in position to win the region at the end of the season.”

After Claiming 2022 Conference Crown, Sandburg Baseball Focused on Another Winning Season

 

 The Carl Sandburg College baseball team looks to go back to back in the Arrowhead Conference this year. 

 

The Chargers finished 26-23 overall last season but really turned it up in conference play, going 17-3 and winning the Arrowhead title for the second time in four seasons under coach Josh Foreman.

 

Sandburg opened its 2023 season Feb. 15 at Heartland, but the Chargers’ schedule kicks into gear this weekend as they head south with games Friday at John A. Logan, Saturday at Southeastern Illinois and Sunday against No. 20 Kankakee in Carterville. Sandburg’s first home game is scheduled for 3 p.m. March 21 against Southeastern.

 

The Chargers will face a challenging schedule as they play 15 games this year against teams in the NJCAA Division II preseason rankings

Foreman: “I say this every year but I have high expectations for this team, and this team has very high expectations for themselves. Our goal is to win a few more and go a little farther.”

 

GAMES TO WATCH

From April 21-23, the Chargers will match up on the road against two preseason ranked opponents and a conference rival. Sandburg plays April 21 at No. 2 Madison and April 23 at No. 20 Kankakee. In between, they’ll face Black Hawk on April 22 in Moline.

GALESBURG — An outstanding freshman campaign has netted Carl Sandburg College women’s basketball player Elly Bentley a spot on the All-Region IV Division II District A Second Team.

 

Bentley, a 5-foot-3 point guard from Limestone, was voted to the team by district coaches after leading the Chargers in scoring, assists and steals during the regular season.

 

Bentley started all 30 regular season games for Sandburg and averaged 18.0 points per contest while shooting 40.4 percent (219 of 542) from the field. She also led the Chargers with a 74.2 percent (98 of 132) mark at the foul line, averaged 3.9 assists per game and picked up 1.4 steals per contest. Bentley finished fourth on the team with 4.8 rebounds per game.

 

The freshman hit double figures in points in all but four contests during the regular season and had 11 occasions with at least 20 points. She scored a season-high 32 on 15-of-20 shooting in Sandburg’s Nov. 28 victory at Southeastern. Bentley closed the regular season Saturday at Lincoln Trail by recording her first collegiate double-double, putting up 28 points and a season-best 10 assists.

 

Bentley opened the postseason by scoring a game-high 23 in the Chargers’ 75-57 win over Elgin on Monday night. She and the Chargers will play in the District B tournament quarterfinals at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Morton.
