Sandburg women’s cross country 25th in USTFCCCA rankings

Coming off an impressive opening race, the Sandburg women’s cross country team earned a spot in the first national poll of the season by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

The Chargers came in at No. 25 in the preseason rankings, garnering eight points in the poll released Wednesday by the USTFCCCA.

Sandburg edged fellow Region 4 program Moraine Valley by one point for the last spot in the top 25. Waubonsee (No. 22) joined the Chargers as the only other Region 4 squad in the national rankings. Mesa came in ranked No. 1, followed by Paradise Valley and Des Moines Area.

Sandburg opened its season Saturday by sweeping the top three spots at the Sauk Valley Early Season Opener in Dixon. Newcomer Joan Jepngetich won the 2-mile race, while sophomores Damaris Kimaiyo and Sharon Yego were second and third, respectively.

The Chargers’ next race is Sept. 20 at the Bradley Intercollegiate. Also, while not a part of Sandburg’s official cross country schedule, the school will host the inaugural Coach Rodney Blue Charitable Run at 8 a.m. Sept. 14 at the college in memory of the late Chargers cross country coach. Money raised will go toward the Coach Rodney Blue Cross Country Team Fund to support future Sandburg cross country student-athletes.

Sandburg men’s golf aims to extend nationals streak

Despite a young roster, the Sandburg men’s golf team aims to continue its long run of success.

The Chargers — who include five freshmen on this year’s seven-man team — have advanced an individual or qualified as a team for the national tournament each of the last 12 years and in 16 of the last 17 seasons.

Sandburg opened its fall schedule with a ninth-place showing at the Duane Chanay Invite on Aug. 26 at Oakwood. The Chargers’ fall slate features five events, while their spring schedule will include the Region 4 and NJCAA Division II championships.

KEY RETURNER

Logan Beers (Bethel, Conn.), sophomore

• Earned a spot on the All-Region 4 team as a freshman after placing ninth at the region tournament.

• Chargers coach Ryan Twaddle: “We saw Logan really develop and mature as last year went on. He keeps just getting better and better. We’re very excited about this year and what he can do.”

Colby Robertson (Carthage, Ill./Illini West), freshman

• Tied for 13th at the Duane Chanay Invite, shooting rounds of 77 and 75 to be the Chargers’ top finisher.

Tanner Wake (Elmwood, Ill./Elmwood), freshman

• Ended his high school career at Elmwood by winning the regional, tying for seventh at the sectional and tying for 31st at the Class 1A state finals.

• Twaddle: “Colby and Tanner each have a great mental game. Both are tough and don’t get down on themselves. They just grind out really good scores.”
