Conference champ Chargers put 3 on All-Arrowhead team

Conference champ Chargers put 3 on All-Arrowhead team

GALESBURG — The Sandburg women’s basketball team placed three players on the All-Arrowhead Conference team after winning a share of its second straight league championship.

Chargers freshman Antonia Kisler and Brook Pieper were first-team selections, while sophomore Gabbie Vontz was voted to the second team by Arrowhead coaches. The trio helped Sandburg finish with a 7-1 record in the conference. Sandburg’s three all-conference picks tied co-champion Black Hawk for the most of any team.

Kisler, a 5-foot-9 forward from Galesburg, averaged a team-best 18.6 points in conference play while adding 8.6 rebounds, 3.3 steals and 1.6 assists. The versatile freshman shot 48 percent from the floor, 32 percent from 3-point range and 82 percent from the foul line.

Kisler, who also earned All-Region 4 honors this season, had three double-doubles in eight Arrowhead games. She scored a season-best 29 points in the Chargers’ Jan. 21 win at home over Black Hawk.

Pieper was named a first-team all-conference pick for the second straight season after averaging 13.1 points and a league-high 13 rebounds per game in Arrowhead action. The 6-1 forward from Abingdon-Avon High School recorded a double-double in all but one conference game, coming up just three points shy in her only contest without one.

Pieper, also a two-time All-Region 4 second-team pick, shot 53 percent from the field, 30 percent from 3-point range and 94 percent (15 of 16) at the foul line. She also finished second in the conference with 23 blocks and averaged 3.1 assists.

Vontz averaged 12.4 points and 5.6 rebounds in conference play while providing a steady veteran presence on both ends of the floor. The 5-7 guard from Oberlin, Kan., led Sandburg with 37 assists in the league and tied Kisler for the team high with 26 steals.

Vontz scored in double figures in four Arrowhead matchups, highlighted by a career-best 22 points in Sandburg’s Jan. 23 win at Highland. She also had 15 points, five rebounds and five assists in the Chargers’ title-clinching victory Feb. 18 at home against the Cougars.
