Sandburg XC teams start season Saturday with home meet

Sandburg XC teams start season Saturday with home meet

GALESBURG — Coming off another strong campaign that saw the Chargers represented at the NJCAA Division II Championships, the Sandburg cross country teams will open their 2025 schedule this weekend at home.

The Chargers, led by second-year coach Kim Schrader, will host the Joan Jepngetich Memorial Invite on Saturday morning on the Galesburg campus. The women’s race is scheduled to start at 10:30 a.m., followed by the men’s race at 11 a.m. The inaugural invite is named in memory of Joan Jepngetich, a sophomore on last year’s Chargers women’s cross country team who died in a car accident last December.

Last year, Sandburg’s women’s team placed 22nd at the national meet after winning the Arrowhead Conference title and finishing second in Region 4 by a single point. The men’s team finished second in the conference and had a fourth-place showing at the Region 4 meet.

KEY RETURNERS

Men’s team: Mathias Kiprotich, sophomore

  • 2024 All-Region 4 and All-Arrowhead Conference
  • Competed at 2024 NJCAA Division II Cross Country Championships, finishing 241st

Women’s team: Linda Koech, sophomore

  • 2024 Region 4 champion and Arrowhead Conference champion
  • Placed 50th at 2024 NJCAA Division II Cross Country Championships

KEY NEWCOMERS

Men’s team: Andrew Peterson, freshman

  • Member of Galesburg High School’s 2024 4x800-meter relay team that placed seventh in Class 2A.
  • Attended Division I Bryant last year as a member of the diving team.
  • Schrader: “Andrew brings an exceptional level of fitness, discipline and training commitment to this year’s team and should be a strong competitor.”

Women’s team: Abigael Maiyo and Grace Maiyo, freshman

  • Sisters from Eldoret, Kenya
  • Schrader: “Grace and Abigael bring with them a strong running tradition with a penchant for speed. They’ll round out our team and look to be difference-makers for scoring.”

WHAT ARE YOUR EXPECTATIONS FOR THIS SEASON?

Schrader: “This year’s goal is to return to a strong presence atop both the Arrowhead Conference and Region 4 on the way to both the men’s and women’s teams representing the Chargers on the national stage. With a healthy roster of spirited competitors, each week should present new opportunities for the athletes to challenge themselves and each other.”

MEET TO WATCH

Sept. 5 at Prairie Stars Invite

  • A new addition to the Chargers’ schedule is this meet hosted by Illinois-Springfield.
  • Schrader: “This, plus our return to very competitive meets at both the Heartland Invitational and Bradley Intercollegiate, should present top-notch competition in preparation for the Arrowhead Conference and Region 4 Championships.”

THIS WILL BE A SUCCESSFUL SEASON IF …

Schrader: “We work together to challenge one another each day, training smart and hard, on the road to better and faster times throughout the season — for everyone.”

Sandburg women's golf aims for repeat trip to nationals

Sandburg women’s golf aims for repeat trip to nationals

After a season that featured plenty of hardware, the Sandburg women’s golf team tees it up for the first time in 2025-26 this weekend.

The Chargers host the Sandburg Invite at 11 a.m. Saturday at Lake Bracken as they start their quest for a second straight trip to the NJCAA Division II Women’s Golf Championship.

Sandburg finished 13th at nationals last season, which marked their third appearance overall in the event (2019 and 2023 were the others). The Chargers earned their way into the field by placing second at the Central District Championship. They also won the program’s second Region 4 title, which was held concurrently with the district tourney.

Sandburg’s fall schedule includes five events. The Chargers’ district championship, which serves as their national qualifier, will take place in April during the spring portion of their season.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Abigail Strode, sophomore (Pekin, Ill./Pekin)

  • The Chargers’ lone returner finished fourth in the Region 4 Championship last season, earning a spot on the all-region team.
  • Chargers coach Gail Hannam: “I know Abigail will be a great team leader. Also, the experience she gained last year, especially at nationals, will help her game move forward.

Jessica Schultz, freshman (Toluca, Ill./Fieldcrest)

  • Placed 30th at the IHSA Class 1A state tournament last fall.
  • Named 2024 Ottawa Times Girls Golfer of the Year.
  • Hannam: “She’s been submitting some very good scores this summer, and I look forward to what she can do at this level.”

WHAT ARE YOUR EXPECTATIONS FOR THIS SEASON?

Hannam: “I’m very excited about this team. Even though we will be young, the incoming freshmen have a lot of competitive experience. I look for us to be able to match last year’s team scores by the end of the fall season.”

TOURNAMENT TO WATCH

New to the Chargers’ fall schedule is the Clash at the Creek on Sept. 23 at Nettle Creek in Morris. Hannam said it should give Sandburg an idea of how it stacks up against the rest of the schools in Region 4.

THIS WILL BE A SUCCESSFUL SEASON IF …

Hannam: “This season will be a success if we can show good growth this fall, work on our deficiencies during the winter and compete for another national tournament run.”

Sandburg men's soccer opens season Friday night at home

Sandburg men’s soccer opens season Friday night at home

The Sandburg men’s soccer team kicks off its season this week as the Chargers look to reach double-digit victories for the third time in as many years under coach Gerardo Ruvalcaba.

The Chargers begin their 2025 campaign with a Region 4 contest under the lights at Kleine Field at 7 p.m. Friday vs. Malcolm X. That and other Chargers home contests can be seen live on the Sandburg YouTube channel (weather permitting).

Sandburg finished last season 12-3-3 for the second straight year, won the Arrowhead Conference title and entered the postseason ranked 19th in NJCAA Division II before being upset by Triton in the first round of the Region 4 tournament.

WHAT ARE YOUR EXPECTATIONS FOR THIS SEASON?

Ruvalcaba: “I’m expecting a team that is full of passion, determination, respect and discipline. We’ll move game by game, and every team on our schedule has to be treated with the same energy and respect. We want to win everything.”

THIS WILL BE A SUCCESSFUL SEASON IF …

Ruvalcaba: “This season, we’ll be successful if we keep a positive attitude all the way to the end of the season. We need all of our players to be fully committed to the team.”

O CAPTAINS! MY CAPTAINS!

The Chargers’ captains this season are three returning sophomores.

  • Luis Garcia, sophomore RW
    • Voted Arrowhead Conference MVP and second-team All-Region 4 as a freshman.
    • Scored 16 goals and totaled 41 points, which ranked 16th and 14th, respectively, in NJCAA Division II.
  • Alberto Fernandez Do Carmo, sophomore D
    • Started in 15 of his 16 appearances last season, scoring four goals and six assists.
  • Connor Mclauchlan, sophomore DB
    • Tallied three assists as a freshman while playing in 16 contests (14 starts).
