Sandburg Volleyball Hosts Region 4 Quarterfinal Wednesday vs. Highland

After winning the Arrowhead Conference championship for the second year in a row, the Carl Sandburg College volleyball team now turns its eyes to a bigger prize.

The Chargers (25-14) earned the No. 6 seed in this week’s Region 4 Division II District B tournament and will host a quarterfinal match against 11th-seeded Highland at 6 p.m. Wednesday in John Lewis Gym. The contest will be streamed on the Carl Sandburg College YouTube channel.

Sandburg swept both meetings with the Cougars (15-19) during the regular season. The Chargers won 25-9, 25-23, 25-19 at home Aug. 29 and 25-15, 27-25, 25-16 on Sept. 28 in Freeport.

Wednesday’s winner advances to the semifinals at 6 p.m. Saturday at Madison against the winner of No. 3 Rock Valley and No. 14 South Suburban. The championship match is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Sunday, also at Madison. Sandburg has reached the title match in seven consecutive seasons.

The champion qualifies for the NJCAA Division II Volleyball Championship, which takes place Nov. 15-18 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The Chargers are looking to reach nationals for the fourth time in school history (2017, 2018, spring 2021).

Carl Sandburg Chargers Get No. 2 Seed in Region 4, Host Quarterfinal Saturday

 The 20th-ranked Carl Sandburg College men’s soccer team will open its postseason by hosting a Region 4 Division II quarterfinal Saturday afternoon.

The Chargers (11-2-2), winners of four straight to close the regular season, earned the No. 2 seed in the 10-team tournament. Sandburg, which jumped into the national rankings this week, will face the winner of Wednesday’s first-round match between No. 7 Moraine Valley and No. 10 Black Hawk.

Saturday’s contest is scheduled for noon at Kleine Field. Should the conditions at Kleine Field at be considered unsuitable for play, the match will take place at 4 p.m. at Jorge Prats Field on the campus of Knox College. Weather permitting, the contest will be streamed on the Carl Sandburg College YouTube channel.

The Chargers earned a 2-1 victory at Black Hawk on Oct. 10. Sandburg did not face Moraine Valley during the regular season.

If the Chargers win Saturday, they will host a semifinal match at 2:30 p.m. Oct. 31. The championship is scheduled for noon Nov. 4 at Madison. The winner of the region tournament advances to the NJCAA Division II Men’s Soccer Championship from Nov. 12-18 in Tucson, Ariz.

Chargers finish regular season 31-4  and set the record for most wins in a single season. We also honored our 3 seniors- Kaelyn Ferrill, Josie Bryan, and Allison Hunter. Sandburg Women’s XC No. 23 in USTFCCCA Rankings

The Carl Sandburg College women’s cross country team made its first appearance in the national polls this season, coming in at No. 23 in this week’s U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association rankings.

The Chargers are coming off a fourth-place showing at last week’s Heartland Invitational. All five women’s teams that competed in that race are part of this week’s rankings: Heartland (Division II No. 2), Harper (Division III No. 1), Southeastern (Division II No. 8) and Kaskaskia (Division II receiving votes).

While Sandburg’s men’s team was not part of this week’s national rankings, the Chargers came in at No. 19 in the preseason and received votes in the Sept. 20 poll.

Both Chargers squads are in action Saturday at the Sauk Valley Invite in Dixon, with the women’s race at 10:30 a.m. and the men’s race at 11:15 a.m. Sandburg then hosts the Arrowhead Conference Championship at 10:15 a.m. Oct. 14.
