Sandburg women's golf earns 2nd straight trip to nationals

Sandburg women’s golf earns 2nd straight trip to nationals

It’s back to nationals for the Sandburg women’s golf team.

The Chargers qualified for the NJCAA Division II Women’s Golf Championship on Tuesday after taking second place in the Central District Championship at Shawnee Country Club.

The Chargers will tee it up at nationals May 12-15 at Ol’ Colony Golf Course in Tuscaloosa, Ala. It’s the second straight year and fourth time overall Sandburg will head to the national tournament. The Chargers previously went in 2019, 2023 and 2025.

Freshman Allie Thome finished seventh overall to earn a spot on the all-district team. Thome, a product of LaSalle-Peru High School, opened with an 87 on Monday and followed with an 86 in Tuesday’s final round. She recorded the lowest score for the Chargers each day.

Thome had birdies at the par-3 seventh and par-5 13th in the opening round, and she added another birdie on No. 13 in Round 2. Thome also made seven pars in Tuesday’s round.

Sandburg shot 752 for the 36-hole tournament to finish as runner-up and earn one of the three national qualifier spots at stake. The Chargers ended Round 1 in second place after posting a 369. They maintained that standing after shooting a 383 in the final round.

Jessica Schultz (93-98) finished 12th for the Chargers, while Olivia Seei (91-105) was 15th and Anna Carroll (98-99) 16th on the individual leaderboard. Abigail Strode tied for 17th with back-to-back rounds of 100.

Murray State (Okla.) finished at 633 (315-318) to win the district title. Murray State’s Hana Cunnane was the district medalist by five strokes, posting rounds of 76 and 75 to finish 7 over par for the tournament.

Kisler, Redding voted All-Arrowhead Conference 1st team after leading Chargers to 3rd straight title

Kisler, Redding voted All-Arrowhead Conference 1st team after leading Chargers to 3rd straight title

GALESBURG — After winning its third straight conference championship, the Sandburg women’s basketball team had two players represented on the All-Arrowhead Conference first team.

Sophomore Antonia Kisler and freshman Hailey Redding were voted by Arrowhead coaches to the squad after they helped Sandburg win the conference title outright with a 9-1 record. The duo also earned all-region honors earlier this week as the Chargers posted the program’s third straight season with 20 wins or more overall.

It's the second consecutive first-team all-conference selection for Kisler, a 5-foot-9 forward from Galesburg. A starter for all 10 conference games, Kisler finished second among Chargers in scoring (15.7 per game) and rebounding (9.0 per game) in league contests.

Kisler tied for the team lead at 3.8 assists per game in conference action. She shot 32 percent overall, 34 percent from 3-point range and 83 percent from the foul line. Kisler also collected 2.5 steals per conference contest.

Kisler scored in double figures in all 10 Arrowhead games, and she recorded four double-doubles in league play. She put up 27 points and 12 rebounds in Sandburg’s Sophomore Night win Feb. 17 over Black Hawk.

Redding, a 5-10 forward from Abingdon-Avon High School, led the Chargers with 62 made field goals and an 18.2 points-per-game average in 10 conference games. She connected on 40 percent of her shots from the floor, made 34 percent of her 3s and was an 81 percent shooter at the free-throw line. Redding averaged 4.9 rebounds against Arrowhead teams.

Like Kisler, Redding reached double figures in all 10 conference matchups, and she had five with at least 20 points. She scored 26 in Sandburg’s Feb. 3 win over Kishwaukee.

GALESBURG — The Sandburg women’s basketball team’s two leading scorers were voted to the All-Region 4 Division II District B team after helping the Chargers to a third consecutive 20-win season and third straight Arrowhead Conference title.

Sophomore Antonia Kisler was a first-team selection for the second straight year, and coaches voted freshman Hailey Redding to the second team after Sandburg finished the season with a 22-10 record.

A 5-foot-9 forward from Galesburg, Kisler led the Chargers with 16.7 points per contest and started all 32 games this season. She shot 36 percent from the floor, 33 percent from 3-point range and a team-best 83 percent from the free-throw line.

Kisler also averaged 8.4 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.7 steals per game. She reached the 1,000-point mark in Sandburg’s region quarterfinal win at Waubonsee and finished her Chargers career with 1,029 in 64 games (16.1 per game). Kisler dropped a career-best 33 points in Sandburg’s season opener Nov. 2 against Culver-Stockton JV.

A 5-10 forward from Abingdon-Avon High School, Redding put up 14.8 points per game in her first season at Sandburg. Redding played in all 32 games and led the Chargers with 75 made 3s on 258 attempts. She finished with a 37 percent mark from the field and shot 77 percent at the foul line.

Sandburg baseball gets early start on 2026 season

GALESBURG — While major league pitchers and catchers have yet to report for spring training, the Sandburg baseball team is set to start its spring season this weekend.

The Chargers — whose roster boasts 30 newcomers — open their 2026 campaign by facing Three Rivers in a weekend series on the turf at Arsenal BG Ballpark in Sauget. The teams will play a nine-inning game at noon Saturday, followed by a doubleheader at noon Sunday.

Sandburg’s first home date is a doubleheader at noon March 7 against Milwaukee Area Tech.

The Chargers finished 14-33 last year in their first season under 2008 alumnus Brandon Porter, but Sandburg managed to put together a .500 mark (10-10) in Arrowhead Conference play with a roster that had just nine sophomores.

KEY RETURNERS

• All-Arrowhead Conference designated hitter as a freshman.

• Posted a 2-4 record and struck out 27 batters last season.
Damien Snell (Galesburg, Ill./Galesburg), redshirt freshman IF

NEWCOMERS TO KNOW
Clayton Cawley (Metamora, Ill./Metamora), sophomore RHP
• Transfer from Morton.

WHAT ARE YOUR EXPECTATIONS FOR THIS SEASON?
Porter: “Our goal is to get better every single day, and so far we’ve done that throughout the fall and in our spring practices. If we stay healthy, we should be able to compete for a conference title and in our region play. We’re a young team, but we do have the right pieces to compete.”

"We have some really interesting matchups that fans from all around the area can look forward to," Sandburg men's basketball coach and shootout organizer Ryan Twaddle said. “Each year, we’ve had a lot of positive feedback from the teams that play here because they get to play on a college floor against a team they don’t normally see. We’re looking forward to hosting another great day of basketball.”

Chargers put 4 players on All-Region 4 men's soccer team

Chargers put 4 players on All-Region 4 men’s soccer team

GALESBURG — Four players, including three first-team picks, represented Sandburg on this year’s All-Region 4 Division II men’s soccer team.

Luis Garcia, Alberto Fernandez Do Carmo and Valentin Kretschmer were first-team selections, while Ramon Ponga was voted to the second team. The quartet helped the Chargers post a 12-3-3 overall record, put together a 12-game unbeaten streak to close the regular season, win a second consecutive Arrowhead Conference title and earn the No. 2 seed in the region tournament. All four players were also voted to the 2025 All-Arrowhead Conference team.

Garcia, a sophomore striker, earned back-to-back all-region honors after being a second-team pick last year. Garcia led the Chargers in goals (13), assists (six), points (32), shot attempts (48) and shots on goal (23) this fall. He also tied for the team lead with three game-winning goals. Garcia had three multi-goal games, including a four-goal, nine-point performance in the Chargers’ Oct. 2 win over Wisconsin-Whitewater at Rock County.

Kretschmer, who was named the Arrowhead Conference MVP, finished second to Garcia among Chargers with eight goals, five assists and 21 points. The sophomore striker had two-goal efforts Sept. 21 at Harper and Oct. 8 against Black Hawk. He also had a four-point contest against UW-Whitewater at Rock County, scoring once and assisting on two goals.

Fernandez Do Carmo tied Garcia for the team lead with three game-winning goals, including a 90th-minute penalty kick in Sandburg’s win over Black Hawk. The sophomore center midfielder totaled six goals, three assists and 15 points on the season. He scored twice in Sandburg’s Sept. 1 win over Kennedy-King.

Ponga, a freshman striker, came on strong late in the season, with five of his eight points coming in the Chargers’ final two regular season matches. He scored and had an assist in Sandburg’s Oct. 17 win over Kishwaukee, and he delivered the game-winning goal in the Chargers’ 1-0 victory Oct. 25 over Heartland.

GALESBURG — Sandburg volleyball outside hitter Abigail Shaffer was voted to the All-Region 4 Division II District B second team after a standout sophomore season.

Shaffer, a 5-foot-7 outside hitter from Southeastern High School, was named to the team by district coaches after putting together an impactful year offensively and defensively for the Chargers.

Appearing in all 38 matches and playing 132 of 136 sets, Shaffer led Sandburg in kills (279), kills per set (2.1), total attacks (1,156), attacks per set (8.8) and points (324.5).

Shaffer showed her versatility by also finishing second among Chargers with 499 digs, 3.8 digs per set, 32 aces and 74 assists this season.

Shaffer turned in her two best defensive outings of the year in back-to-back contests to close the season. She picked up 28 digs in Sandburg’s Oct. 29 win over Black Hawk on Sophomore Night, and she totaled a career-high 33 digs in the Chargers’ Region 4 quarterfinal loss Wednesday at Kankakee.

Shaffer also set a career high this season with 19 kills in the Chargers’ Oct. 4 victory over Lake Michigan. She finished the year with double-digit kills in 11 contests.
