39 Chargers, 4 Sandburg Teams Earn NJCAA Academic Awards

GALESBURG — Carl Sandburg College had 39 student-athletes and four teams earn NJCAA academic awards for the 2022-23 school year.

This marks the third straight year Sandburg has had at least 30 individuals receive NJCAA All-Academic honors for having a GPA of at least 3.60. Seven Chargers were named NJCAA All-Academic First Team for recording a perfect 4.0 GPA. Another seven received second-team honors (3.80-3.99 GPA), and 25 earned third-team honors (3.60-3.79 GPA). A total of 10,267 NJCAA student-athletes earned all-academic honors this past season.

All 10 eligible Chargers teams had at least one player earn a spot on the NJCAA All-Academic team. Baseball had the most recipients of any team, with 11. Six of Sandburg’s honorees participated in multiple sports, and 19 Chargers earned NJCAA All-Academic honors for the second consecutive year. Additionally, third-year sophomores Carmyn Baldwin, Addison Eger and Griffin Ronnebeck received all-academic accolades for the third year in a row.

Sandburg also had four squads recognized as 2022-23 NJCAA Academic Teams of the Year for posting a combined grade point average of at least 3.0. The Region IV champion women’s golf team had the highest GPA of any Chargers team at 3.56. Also honored as NJCAA Academic Teams of the Year were volleyball, softball and women’s basketball. There were 1,078 NJCAA teams that earned at least a 3.0 GPA.

“These honors are reflective of the campus commitment our coaches, faculty and staff have to providing an exceptional education as well as a holistic experience for our students,” Sandburg athletic director Daniella Irle said. “I am proud of these scholar-athletes and applaud their diligence and focus on their academics.”
