Carthage Library virtually hosts Academy Award winning costume designer-
Ruth E. Carter
Carthage Public Library District joins more than 200 Illinois libraries to virtually
host “Interweaving Tradition and Imagination Through Costume Design” with Ruth E.
Carter on Wednesday, March 20 at 7:00 pm. Attend a watch party at the Carthage
Public Library, 500 Wabash Avenue in Carthage, or pre-register for the Zoom program
at bit.ly/ILP_RuthCarter or through the link on the library’s website. This program will
NOT be recorded for later viewing.
Carter won the Academy Award in Best Costume Design for the film Black
Panther and the sequel, Wakanda Forever, and is the only person to have won this
award more than once. Carter’s ability to develop an authentic story through costume
and character make her one of the most sought-after and renowned costume designers
today. She is known for her research and diligence to the craft of costume design,
specifically for her work on films such as Spike Lee’s Malcolm X, Steven Spielberg’s
Amistad and Ava DuVernay’s Selma.
Ruth E. Carter will be joined in conversation with Aisha Harris, co-host of NPR’s
Pop Culture Happy Hour and author of Wannabe.
Also, mark your calendar for Wednesday, April 3, when Illinois Libraries Present
Dr. Temple Grandin, advocate for the autism community, speaking on The Hidden Gifts
of Visual Thinkers. The event will take place via Zoom at 7:00 pm on April 3, with a
watch party at the Carthage Public Library.
These events are made possible by Illinois Libraries Present (ILP), a statewide
collaboration among public libraries offering premier events. ILP is funded in part by a
grant awarded by the Illinois State Library, a department of the Office of Secretary of
State, using funds provided by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services, under
the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA). Illinois Libraries
Present is committed to inclusion and accessibility.
