Lloyd L. “Stub” Holmes

1936-2026

 

 Stub Holmes, 90, of Montrose, IA passed away Sunday, August 16, 2026 at his home in Montrose.

     He was born June 22, 1936, in Argyle, IA the son of Lloyd and Opal Holmes. Stub married his first wife, Marjorie, and they had three children, Lori, Gary, and David. Stub and Marjorie later divorced. Stub married Myrna McCarty on July 16, 1977.

     Stub is survived by his brother, Larry Holmes (Julie) of Montrose, IA; his sister, Janet Hopp (Roger) of Fargo, ND; his daughter, Lori Pollpeter (Alan) of Ft. Madison, IA; his son, Gary Holmes of Paducah, KY; his stepson, Jerry McCarty (Janice) of Primrose, IA; and his stepson-in-law, Tim LeMatty (Deb) of Montrose, IA.

     He is also survived by six grandchildren, Nichalus Ellison (Nicole), Jeremy McCarty (April), Jaime Mueller (Jason), Jared McCarty (Selah), Timmy LeMatty, and Tammy Robbins (Scott); twenty great-grandchildren, Ava Ellison, Kade Ellison, Ariel LeMatty Sanders (Jason), Timothy LeMatty III (Erika), Ty LeMatty, Dalton Robbins, Cole Robbins (Chey), Cody McCarty (Carrie), Canyon McCarty (Kayla), Maverick McCarty (Emily), Julianna McCarty, Jacob McCarty, Skylar Guthrie, Jaylen Brodry, Josie Mueller, Jayden Mueller, Jaxson Mueller, Grace McCarty, Emry McCarty, and Wesley McCarty; and three great-great-granddaughters, Abigail, Ember, and Harper.

     He was preceded in death by his wife, Myrna, his parents, brother-in-law Roger Hopp, brother-in-law Mel Ewing, sister-in-law Janet Ewing, his son David, and stepdaughter, Deb LeMatty.

     Stub’s passions were farming and raising animals like hogs, miniature ponies, and horses. Early in his marriage to Myrna they traveled and camped all over the country. He enjoyed camping and trail riding with friends and relatives during trips in Iowa and to Missouri and Illinois.

     He started working at 16 years of age at the Montrose (IA) elevator, where he drove trucks. Due to his experience and expertise, he was frequently requested by farmers to spray their fields. Later in life he worked for Agrineed and the Auwaerter and Newberry farms.

     According to his wishes, he was cremated, and a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
