Evelyn Marie Hempen, 90, of Davenport, Iowa, passed away peacefully at
her daughter’s home on Saturday, June 1, 2024.
Evelyn was born January 27, 1934, in Sonora Township, Illinois, the
daughter of Elwin and Forrest (Starr) Simon. On December 9, 1951, she
was united in marriage to Bill Hempen, her beloved husband of sixty-six
years until his death in 2018.
A lifelong resident of Hancock County, Evelyn graduated from Hamilton
High School and held positions as a nurse’s aide, secretary, and even
traveled the country assisting at various jobs as her husband worked as a
handyman at condominiums. She loved flea markets, auctions, and taking
photographs. If she made up her mind to do something, she did it.
Evelyn is survived by her son Michael Hempen of Donnellson, Iowa; her
daughter Victoria Levsen of Davenport, Iowa; her sister Maxine Carlton of
Kentucky; and eight grandchildren: Chris Hempen; Shelly (Keith) Karriker;
Sherry Hempen; Dustin Svejda; Brandon (Amanda) Svejda; Cody Svejda;
Eric Hempen; and Michelle Hempen. Other survivors include fourteen
great-grandchildren: Adam and Daniel Hempen; Kate and Shawna Allen;
Kristina McCluskey, Hailea, Caden, and Evelyn Coffey; Hayden, Adriana,
Trinity, Mekhi, Greyer, and Sawyer Svejda; and Brayden Svejda. Great-
great grandchildren include Lucas, Adlea, Logan, Charlea, Helena, and
Vailea.
Evelyn is preceded in death by her parents; her in-laws; her husband Bill;
four sons: Alfred, Billy, Steve, and Terry; and two great grandchildren:
Donovan and Dominic.
Funeral services will be held at 2 pm on Friday, June 7, 2024, at Printy
Funeral Home in Hamilton, with burial to follow at Oakwood Cemetery in
Hamilton. Visitation will be held from noon until time of services at 2.
