Martin “LeRoy” Johnson
1929-2024
Martin "LeRoy" Johnson, 94, of Montrose, IA, died Monday, April 1, 2024, at Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice in Burlington, IA.
LeRoy was born August 29, 1929 near Summitville, IA, the son of Martin Peter and Julia Evelyn Hoffman Johnson. He married G. Patricia Symmonds on December 13, 1953 in Keokuk, IA. She preceded him in death in 2015.
He is survived by five daughters and three sons, Lois Thompson of Louisburg, KS; Linda Bleything of Louisburg, KS; Lori (Lyle) Matteson of Donnellson, IA,; John (Peggy) Johnson of Keokuk, IA; Jim (April) Johnson of Montrose, IA; Joe (Holli) Johnson of Montrose, IA; Pam (John) Patterson of Keokuk, IA; and Patricia Guymon of Olathe, KS. Other survivors include his sister, Bernice Johnson of Keokuk, IA, twenty-two grandchildren, forty great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, one sister, Dorothy, one brother, Emmett, and three grandsons.
He was a lifelong resident of Lee County, IA. In 1948 he purchased a farm in Montrose, IA, where he remained until his death. When he retired from farming he and his wife were active in local Farmers Markets and provided pumpkin patch visits for local school children and youth groups. For 16 years, until age 91, he assisted his son, Jim, transplanting flowers and vegetables each season at Jim's Greenhouses. He enjoyed visits from his many grandchildren and would ensure they enjoyed a tour of the farm on his golf cart and help with apple cider making.
LeRoy was a member of Cornerstone Church in Keokuk.
A graveside services will be held at 9 a.m., Saturday at the Montrose Cemetery.
Visitation will be held after 1 p.m., Friday, at the Vigen Memorial Home in Montrose, IA with the family meeting with friends from 5-7 p.m.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House.
