David Riley Powell

1940-2024

 

     David Riley Powell, 83, of Hamilton, Illinois, passed away on March 29, 2024, at his residence in Hamilton.

     He was born on May 27, 1940, in Los Angeles, California, the son of Rex Winston and Erma Eloise Riley Powell.

     David graduated from Keokuk High School with the class of 1958. Continuing his education, he attended Keokuk Community College before furthering his studies at the University of Iowa and Carthage College.   

     David served his country by joining the Iowa National Guard in 1963 and was discharged with the rank of spec 5 in 1969.

     On August 19, 1967, he was united in marriage to Jae Ellyn Wray in Keokuk, Iowa.  She survives.

     He is also survived by daughter, Denise Powell of Keokuk, IA, his son, John "Jack" Powell of Ft. Madison, three granddaughters, Amelia Powell, Taylor Tolan (Austin) and Alexis Mauck (Roger), one great grandson, River Mauck.  He is also survived by two brothers, William Powell of Oro Valley, AZ and John Powell (Dian) of Davenport, IA along with several nieces, nephews.

     He was preceded in death by his parents, maternal and paternal grandparents and aunts and uncles.             For 28 years, David dedicated himself to his profession as a lab analyst for Hubinger/ Heintz/ Roquette until his well-deserved retirement in 1997.

     David was deeply involved in his community. He had delivered Meals on Wheels for over 20 years to homes in Keokuk, Argyle and Montrose. He was a charter member of the Hamilton Lions Club.  Additionally, he served as a member of the Hamilton Park District board, contributing to the enhancement of recreational opportunities for all. David was also a member of the Keokuk Elks Club.  In recognition of his outstanding service, David was honored with the prestigious Melvin Jones Fellow award by the Lions Club of Illinois Foundation, a testament to his commitment to humanitarian causes.

     A graveside service will be held 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 3, 2024 at the Sandusky Cemetery with Joel Schlatter officiating.

     Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 3, 2024, prior to the graveside at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk with the family meeting with friends at that time.

     In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Meals on Wheels.
