Edward Jay Owen

Edward Jay Owen, 83, of Carthage, passed away at his home on Friday, January 12, 2024.
Ed was born at his home on April 3, 1940, in Carthage, Illinois, the son of Edward Peters Owen and Nina
Ethel (Weeks) Owen. He graduated from Carthage High School in 1958. On June 25, 1957, Ed enlisted in
the US Navy on active duty and went on to retire from the US Naval Reserve. He married Karen JoAnn
Schulte. They had two daughters, Tammy, and Tracie. They later divorced. Ed was united in marriage to
Jean Perkins on July 22, 1979, at the United Presbyterian Church in Carthage. Ed was a lifelong painter
and farmer. He loved to hunt and fish, with duck, squirrel and turkey hunting being his favorites. He was
also a big conservationist, planting food plots and preserving natural habitat on his farm to help sustain
the native wildlife. Ed served as President of Willsie Hunting Club in Sumner, Missouri, He served on the
Carthage city council, and was the chairman of the tree committee and chairman of public property. Ed
also served on the Hancock County Board and the Hancock County Soil and Water Conservation District
Board. He served as President on the Hancock County Health Department Board and was a member of
the Eagles club in Carthage.
Ed is survived by his wife, Jean; two daughters, Tammy Sullivan of Quincy, IL and Tracie Owen of
Gunnison, CO., a stepson Michael (Stacy Hanlin) Perkins of Quincy, IL; four grandchildren, James Sullivan,
Olivia Sullivan, Daniel Sullivan and John (Melanie) Sullivan; three step grandsons, Zachary Perkins,
Andrew Perkins and Trevor (Becky) Perkins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister in infancy, Martha, a half-sister, Ethel Boston and a
half-brother Eugene Miller.
A funeral service will be held at 11 AM on Friday, January 19, 2024, at the Presbyterian Church in
Carthage with burial to follow at Moss Ridge Cemetery. A visitation will be held Thursday, January 18,
2024, from 5 PM-7PM at Printy Funeral Home in Carthage. Memorials may be directed to H.U.G.S., First
Presbyterian Church in Carthage, and The American Cancer Society. Printy Funeral Home in Carthage is
in charge of arrangements.
