Doris Evelyn Adkins

1931-2023

 

     Doris Evelyn Adkins, 92, of Keokuk, IA went home to be with the Lord, December 25, 2023 at home.  

     She was born July 17, 1931, on their family farm in Steffenville, MO, to James Dennis and Sarah Edith (Sheets) Powell.  Doris graduated from Edina High School in Edina, MO with the class of 1950.

     She was united in marriage to Roy Samuel Adkins on June 1, 1948, in LaBelle, MO, and they made their home in Edina, MO, and later Keokuk, IA.  They were married 56 years before Sam passed away in 2004.

     She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Keokuk.

     She worked many years at Horner Box Company in Keokuk.  

     She enjoyed traveling with Sam and with her sister, and she made several trips to places like Hawaii, Alaska, and took bus trips and cruises.  She loved Elvis and country western music, and traveled to the Grand Old Opry and Branson to attend shows. 

     She was a great cook and loved making meals for family. She enjoyed decorating for Christmas. She had a great love for animals, having several dogs and a cat in the course of her life, currently loved by her Yorkie, Sassie.

     Doris was preceded in death by her husband Sam Adkins; her parents James and Edith Powell; a brother who died in infancy, James William Powell; and a sister Betty Arterburn. 

     She is survived by nieces Nancy (Gerald) Graves and D. (Ross) Peterson, nephews David (Mary) Adkins and Johnnie Lee (Cindy) Adkins,  many great-nieces and great-nephews, and many good friends who were a great help to her, especially in the later years of her life. 

     Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, January 3, 2024 at the Keokuk National Cemetery with Pastor Bob Brandhagen officiating with burial following.  A lunch will be served at the First Baptist Church following burial, all are invited to attend.

     There will be no visitation.

     In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to the Keokuk Animal Services or to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
