Darrell James Plumley, 84, of Carthage, passed away at 4:51 pm on Thursday, September 14, 2023, at
Wesley Village in Macomb. 
Darrell was born on August 7, 1939, in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Joe and Betty (LaRock) Plumley.
Darrell graduated from Carthage High School in 1958.  On November 12, 1960, Darrell was united in
marriage to Jearlyn Lunt. 
He worked as a manager at Montgomery Wards for many years before owning and operating the Towne
House Restaurant and Plum Tree Supper Club & Lounge in Carthage for 27 years before his retirement. 
Whether you knew Darrell or not, you should be prepared for his teasing!  He would never miss a
chance to crack a joke and make people smile and laugh. Darrell also loved the outdoors. Whether it was
hunting, fishing, four wheeling, shooting at the gun club, or raising beagles and birds he was always
going to stay busy.  One of his favorite passions most of his life was horses.  From when he started
dating Jearlyn, he began showing horses with her family, then grew into racing quarter horses and finally
involving his granddaughter back into the horse show circuit. Many great memories came from days at
the Hancock County Saddle Club and racetracks with family and friends. Later in life, Darrell loved
nothing more than spending time with his grandchildren at sporting events, school functions, and just
“errands with Papa”.  
Darrell is survived by his wife, Jearlyn Plumley of Carthage; his two daughters, Kelly (Tony) Freeman of
Carthage, IL, Jennifer (Jimmy) Lauzon of Asheville, NC; his grandkids, Kortney (Luke) Burling of Carthage,
IL, Kylee Freeman of Carthage, IL, Liv Lauzon of Asheville, NC, and Tanner Freeman of Carthage, IL; his
great grandkids, Annie, Brooks, Ry and Ronnie Burling; sister-in-law, Katey Lunt; numerous nieces,
nephews, and cousins.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his twin sisters, Jayne Karlov and Judy Manzo; sister-in-law,
Rogene Dye and brothers-in-law Tom Dye, Dick Lunt, and Bob Karlov.
A celebration of life will be held at the Lake Hill Winery in Carthage, IL, from 1 – 4pm on Sunday, October
1, 2023. Memorials may be made to the Hancock County Saddle Club or the Carthage Park District.
