Larry Charles Payne

1943-2023

 

     Larry Charles Payne, 79, of Keokuk, IA died Friday, March 3, 2023 at Sunset Home in Quincy, IL.

     He was born December 12, 1943 in Kansas City, MO the son of Floyd and Della Kneale Payne.  Larry graduated from Keokuk High School with the class of 1963. 

     On February 10, 1962 Larry was united in marriage to Becky Thompson.  They later divorced.  On July 23, 1983 Larry was united in marriage to Susan Merideth in Keokuk.  She preceded him in death on January 8, 2023.

     He had been employed as a machinist and owned and operated Payne Machine Shop and worked at various shops in the area.  He later was the owner and operator of the Red Wagon and Half Time Deli and Sports Bar in Keokuk from 1994-2010.

     Larry loved music and was a bassist in several different bands through the years, including Spiritual Aires, Larry, Larry, & Larry, Rubber Band and Ace in the Hole.  He was an avid Kansas City Chiefs and Royals fan.  Larry enjoyed traveling and especially loved to visit his birth town, Kansas City.  Larry also enjoyed going out to lunch with his friends from the Class of 1963. He really enjoyed signing karaoke.

     He is survived by one son, Sam (Kris) Payne of Keokuk, three grandchildren, Gabe (Lauren) Payne of Moore, OK, Nicholas Payne of Keokuk and Carrie Payne of Hamilton, IL and six great-grandchildren.  He is also survived by two brothers, Bob (Mary) Payne and Gary (Trish) Payne of Keokuk, two sisters, Peggy Skinner of Keokuk and Vicki (Denis) Pezley of Palmyra, MO, one sister-in-law, Suzan Payne of Keokuk, half-brother, David Payne, and two half-sisters, Melody Krone and Lisa Demond and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

     In addition to his wife, he is also preceded in death by his parents, one son, Larry M. Payne, one grandson, Jeff Coovert, one sister, Patsy Bell, one brother, Ron Payne, one niece, Kayle Payne, one nephew, R.J. Payne, his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Ellsworth and Marty Merideth and one brother-in-law, Jim Merideth.

     A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m., Friday at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, IA with Pastor Donnie Skinner officiating. 

     Visitation will be held prior to the service, Friday at the funeral home with family meeting with friends from 3-4 p.m.

     In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to KPlay.
