George Hugh Stevens

George Hugh Stevens, 80, of Nauvoo, passed away at 3:12 AM early Saturday morning, January 21, 2023, at his home.

George was born December 7, 1942, in Lewiston, Cache, Utah to Dr. Hugh William Stevens and Belva Cook Stevens. He was the youngest of 4 children. He has one surviving sister, La Rue Stephenson of Lewiston, Utah.

He married Lacy Marie Howard on July 17, 1964 in the Logan Utah Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. 

He is the father of 6 children: Howard George Stevens and his wife Dawn Anderson of Florence, Alabama; Joan Marie Stevens Sender and her husband Douglas Sender of Aurora, Ohio; Stephanie Ann Stevens Corley and husband Billy Corley of Matheson, Mississippi; William Hugh Stevens and his wife Kimberly Pulda of Gilbert, Arizona; Saresa Sue Stevens of Moline, Illinois; Spencer Lee Stevens and his wife Marissa Phelps of Queens Creek, Arizona.

He is the grandfather of 23 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. 

He served a 2-year mission from 1962-1964 for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in the Central Atlantic States Mission (Virginia & North Carolina).

He attended Utah State University and the University of Utah.

His professional career was in public water utilities in Salt Lake City, Utah, Kinston North Carolina, and Moline, Illinois. He retired from the city of Moline, Illinois in 2002 after 30 years with the City of Moline. 

He was active in many professional organizations; Water Environment Federation, Illinois Water Environment Association, Illinois Association of Water Pollution Control Operations, Illinois Association of Sanitary Districts and the American Public Works Association. He is a past president of the Moline Noon Optimist Club.

He is an Eagle Scout and was active in the Boys Scouts of American in Moline. 

After retiring, he and his wife moved to Nauvoo, Illinois to serve in the newly built Nauvoo Illinois Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He has served as an Ordinance Worker since 2002 and as an Assistant Temple Recorder since 2004.

He enjoyed playing the piano and organ, serving in the Temple, fishing, gardening, and traveling throughout the United States. 

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, January 27, 2023, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Nauvoo with burial to follow in the Nauvoo City Cemetery.  Visitation will be held from 9:00 AM t0 10:30 AM Friday morning at the church. Printy Funeral Home of Carthage is in charge of the arrangements.
