Alan Stewart, 76, of Sullivan, formerly of LaHarpe and Brownstown, Illinois passed over to his heavenly home at 8:20 p.m. Thursday December 22, 2022 in his residence.
Alan was born August 30, 1946 in Oxnard, California the son of Roy J. and Burnetta K. Fink Stewart. He was raised in rural Brownstown, Illinois where he attended school and graduated high school in 1964. He served in the U. S. Army as a Marine Engineer from 1965 - 1967 during the Viet Nam conflict. Alan married Bonnie Crabill on March 29, 1969 in LaHarpe.
Later in life Alan finished college at Western Illinois University fulfilling his dream of teaching and coaching. He had a sincere love for his students and the athletes he coached resulting in many lifetime friends. The pleasures of his life were fishing with and loving on his grandchildren, coaching and teaching. He also enjoyed anything “automobile” - especially a 1967 Chevy Nova and was a lifelong St. Louis Cardinals fan. He was a member of the LaHarpe Christian Church. There was a special place in his heart for his fellow veterans and abused and neglected children
Surviving are his wife Bonnie of Sullivan; sons Shannon (Tera) Stewart of Sullivan and Shawn (Patti) Stewart of Keokuk, Iowa; sisters in law, Della Stewart of St. Elmo, Cathy (Reinnie) Bergmann and Becky Crabill both of Carthage, Illinois; brothers in law, Dick Crabill of Joplin, Missouri and Dian Crabill of Carthage, Illinois; grandchildren Rylan and Jake Stewart, Scott and Matthew Garrelts, Chelsea Hopp and Wesley Harrison; special friends Jeff Jarvis and Andy and Matt Kraus; ten great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews whom he was close to.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his in laws, Bill and Lillian Crabill; brothers Bill, David and Frank; sister Judy Cole and sister in law Linda Crabill.
Visitation will be 4-6 p.m. Wednesday December 28, 2022 in the Reed Funeral Home, Sullivan. Graveside services will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday in the LaHarpe Township Cemetery, LaHarpe, Illinois with military honors conducted by the LaHarpe American Legion. Memorials are suggested to the Shiloh Christian Children’s Ranch , to a veteran in need or to a local youth baseball program.
