Alice Marie (Gilliam) Johnson, 66, of Bowen, passed away on Tuesday, November 22, 2022, at Aspire Nursing and Rehabilitation of Donnellson, Iowa.

 

Alice was born on June 18, 1956, in Keokuk, Iowa, the daughter of Lawrence and Elizabeth (Spriggs) Gilliam. Alice owned and operated Johnson’s Grocery in Bowen for several years. She later worked as a cook at the Jiffy Stop in Carthage, and was later employed at Rhodes Market in Augusta, the Post Office, Chem-Gro and Fast Stop throughout her working career. 

 

Alice loved her family, especially taking her nieces and nephews to the county fair. She enjoyed spending her free time camping and playing cards, and her favorite holiday was always Halloween, going all-out every year. Alice was a friend to everyone and was always willing to lend a helping hand. If you were the underdog, you knew Alice was rooting for you.

 

Alice is survived by two sisters: Betsy Welty of Palmyra, Missouri, and Faith (Patrick) Thompson of Warsaw; her good friend Teresa Wood of Bowen, Illinois; and several nieces and nephews. 

 

Alice is preceded in death by her parents and her sister Florence Rohrbough.

 

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am on Monday, November 28, 2022, at Printy Funeral Home in Warsaw. Burial will follow at Oakland Cemetery in Warsaw. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Sunday from 1 to 5 pm, with family meeting friends from 3 to 5 pm. 

 

Memorials may be directed to the Assembly of God church in Warsaw, Compassus Hospice or Aspire Nursing and Rehabilitation of Donnellson.
