Stanley Edward Sherrill

            1928-2022

 

   Stanley Edward Sherrill, age 94, passed away peacefully in his sleep at a hospice Wednesday, October 26, 2022 in Atlanta. GA with his son by his side. Stan was born on September 20, 1928 in Keokuk, IA to Grover C. and Blanche A. (Eid) Sherrill, the 4th of 5 children. 

   He graduated from Hamilton High School in Hamilton, IL.  On June 24, 1954, he married Donnalee Samuels in Keokuk-IA. Four children were born to this union. Donna passed away in March, 2009. 

   During his college years, he was the camp ranger at Camp Eastman, a BSA camp located in Nauvoo, IL. He graduated from Southeastern Community College in Keokuk, IA and furthered his education at the University of Illinois in Macomb, earning a BS in K-9 elementary and physical education in 1963. His first teaching/coaching position was in Mediapolis (IA), followed by Deep River-Millersburg (IA), DMT/Rolfe (IA) and finally Rodman/West Bend (IA), where he was on the teaching/coaching staff from 1969-1991. Many WB youth went through his JH science classes and/or participated in girls’ basketball, volleyball and track under his coaching. While teaching at the Rodman School, Stan planted numerous trees on the school grounds. He was awarded the Palo Alto Conservation Award for his efforts. During many summers, Stan and Donna operated S&D Concessions at various carnivals in IA, MN, NE and SD.

   Stan loved “The Purple” of the WB Bulldogs and WB-M Wolverines.  He was also an avid Hawkeye fan! He will be remembered for his love of playing cards, bidding at local auctions, his many building projects, hunting and fishing activities, and finding treasures for other people. He had a deep love and respect for science, nature, and the out-of-doors. For decades Stan and Donna also sold antiques in the original Antique Building at the Clay County Fair in Spencer, IA. Stan was a member of the Catholic Church.

   He is survived by: his children - Theresa (Steve) Reiter of Wichita, KS; Tina Sherrill-Range (Kevin Range) of Milford, IA; Trudy (Bob) West of New Braunfels, TX and Tim Sherrill of Mableton, GA. Eight grandchildren - Marie (Jeff) Allen, Geoff Reiter (Jenna Mishica), Lynne (David) Osthus, Devin (Danielle) Range, Jessica (Jon) Wienhold, Sadie (Tony) Voong, Adam (Debraun) West and Amy (Ed VI) Bailey. Fifteen great grandchildren - Sam & Ben Allen; Stratton, Benson, Kenley & Finley Range; Gavin & Cullin Wienhold; Addyson, Cali, Brielle & Dakota West; and Edmond VII, Beau & Hunter Bailey. His brother - Marvin (Rosann) Sherrill of Madison, WI, and sister-in-law - Mary Margaret Beasley of Corpus Christi, TX. Plus many cousins, nieces and nephews.

   He was preceded in death by his wife, Donna, his parents, his brothers Leland and Dewain Sherrill, his sister Alvernia Jones, his half-sister Gladys Sparks, and his brother-in-law Jerry Samuels.

   A Celebration of Life service for Stan will be held at Divine Mercy Catholic Parish – Saints Peter and Paul’s Church in West Bend, IA on Thursday, November 17.  Family will be available for visitation at the church prior to the service, 9:00-10:30 AM (206 N. Broadway Avenue). On Saturday, November 19, a visitation will be held at the Printy Funeral Home from 9:00-11:00 AM (720 Main Street), in Hamilton, IL. Following the visitation, the cremated ashes of Stan and his wife, Donna, will be interred at a graveside service in Oakwood Cemetery (561 N. 17th Street) in Hamilton, IL.

   In lieu of flowers, cards and/or memorials can be sent to the Family of Stan Sherrill, C/O Theresa Sherrill Reiter at 133 N. Parkdale Court, Wichita, KS, 67212.  Memorials will be divided between Stan’s favorite charities, including the Iowa Department of Conservation, Pheasants Forever and Camp Eastman BSA Camp.
