Berneita Idell Smith, 99, of Carthage, passed away at 6:03 PM Wednesday evening, March 16, 2022, at her home in Carthage.

Berneita was born July 7, 1922, the daughter of James and Lelia (Langford) Clark in Bentley, Illinois.  She graduated from Quincy High School in 1940.  In 1942 she was united in marriage to Gilbert Smith in Dillon, South Carolina.  He preceded her in death in 1986.  Berneita had worked at the State Street Store in Quincy for many years and was a member of the First Christian Church Disciples of Christ in Carthage.  She enjoyed crossword puzzles, reading, and playing countless hours of Kings in the Corner and Skip-Bo.  You could also find her watching her beloved Days of our Lives and always looked forward to her weekly hair appointment. Berneita deeply loved her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren and her eyes would light up the room when she saw them. She will be missed by family and friends.

 

Berneita is survived by her son, Gary Dennis Smith of Springfield, MO; grandchildren, Shawna Gerding and Cory Smith of Quincy IL; great grandchildren Shay and Lincoln Gerding of Quincy IL and numerous nieces and nephews. The family greatly appreciates the special medical attention and care that she received from her niece, Judy Gillogly.  Berneita always put the needs of others before herself and she will be greatly missed by family and friends.  

 

Berneita was preceded in death by her husband Gilbert of 44 years, her parents, five sisters and one brother. 

 

Graveside services will be held at 11:30 AM Monday morning, March 21, 2022, at Harmony Township Cemetery near Bentley.  Visitation will be held from 10:00 – 11:00 AM Monday morning at Printy Funeral Home in Carthage.

 

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials made to Shay and Lincoln’s Education Fund in c/o Shawna Gerding.   Printy Funeral Home of Carthage is in charge of arrangements
