Robert Eugene Johnson, 92, of LaHarpe, Illinois passed away at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, May 23, 2020 at his home.

Eugene was born on November 11, 1927 in Monmouth, Illinois, the son of Harry R. “Jack” and Hila O. (Waddell) Johnson. He graduated from LaHarpe High School in 1945. After graduation he enlisted in the United States Army. He married Betty L. George on March 7, 1948.

Eugene is survived by his wife of 72 years, Betty; seven children, Roger (Mary Ann) Johnson, Rita Bennett, Rex (Debbie) Johnson, Rhonda (Delbert) Kreps all of LaHarpe, Ricky (Debbie) Johnson of rural Carthage, Illinois, Renee (Dickie) Goff of Biggsville, Illinois and Ronnie (Traci) Johnson of rural Blandinsville, Illinois. Also surviving are 33 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

Eugene was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Wendell, Dale, Duane and Doren Johnson; his son, Randy Johnson; and three grandchildren.

He was a 73 year member of the LaHarpe American Legion Post #301 and a member of the LaHarpe Masonic Lodge #195 along with all of his sons.

Eugene farmed all of his life along side of his wife. He was a devoted husband and father to their eight children. They lived a simple life and he was a friend to many, he had a hearty laugh, an engaging smile and a tender heart. He is treasured by his family and leaves a lasting legacy to those who love him.

A private graveside service will be May 26, 2020 at the LaHarpe Cemetery. There will be no formal visitation but friends may call from 1:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Monday, May 25, 2020 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe. A memorial fund has been established for the LaHarpe American Legion Post #301.
